விண்ட லம்பி ளந்தெ ழுந்த
செம்பொன் மண்ட பங்க ளும்ப	யின்றவீடு
கொந்த ளைந்த குந்த ளந்த
ழைந்து குங்கு மந்த யங்கு
கொங்கை வஞ்சு தஞ்ச மென்று	மங்குகாலம்

Paraphrase

The first half of the poem talks of the many pleasures we enjoy in life, which fade away at the time of death. The saint pleads for the refuge of Lord's twin feet at such a crucial hour.

வந்து வந்து முன் தவழ்ந்து வெஞ்சுகம் தயங்க நின்று மொஞ்சி மொஞ்சி என்று அழும் குழந்தையோடு (vandhu vandhu mun thavazhndhu vensugam thayanga nindRu monji monji endRu azhum kuzhandhaiyOdu ) : My child who comes crawling to me crying for food, and gives me immense pleasure; வெம் சுகம் = விரும்பத்தக்க இன்பம்; தயங்க = விளங்க;

மண் தலம் குலுங்க அண்டர் விண்தலம் பிளந்தெழுந்த செம் பொன் மண்டபங்களும் பயின்ற வீடு (mandalam kulunga aNdar viN thalam piLandhu ezhundha sempon mandabangaLum payindRaveedu) : my sprawling house with golden spires ('sempon mandabangal') that reaches up to the sky, shaking the foundations on the earth,

கொந்து அளைந்த குந்தளம் தழைந்து குங்குமம் தயங்கு கொங்கை வஞ்சி (kondhu aLaindha kunthaLam thazhaindhu kungumam thayangu kongai vanji) : my wife, with hair decked with fragrant flowers, breasts smeared with vermilion, and waist slender as a reed; கொந்து (kondhu) : bunch of flowers; குந்தளம் (kundaLam) : hair;

தஞ்ச மென்று மங்குகாலம் (thanjam endRu mangukAlam ) : When all these I had considered my refuge, fade away

கொங்கு அடம்பு கொங்கு பொங்கு பைங்கடம்பு தண்டை கொஞ்சு செம் சதங்கை தங்கு பங்கயங்கள் தாராய் (kongu adambu kongu pongu paingadambu thaNdai konju chem chadhangai thangu pangayangaL thArAy) : Give me your lotus feet, which is fragrant with pollens from kombu, adambu and kadappa flowers and is adorned by lilting anklets and reddish 'sathangai'! கோங்குப்பூ, அடம்புப் பூ, வாசம் மிகுந்த பசும் கடப்பமலர், தண்டைக்கழல், கொஞ்சுவதுபோல ஒலிக்கும் செவ்விய சதங்கைகள்- இவை தங்கும் தாமரைபோன்ற உன் பாதங்களைத் தந்தருள்வாயாக. கொங்கு பொங்கு = வாசனை மிகுந்த; பைங் கடம்பு = பசிய கடம்பு;

சந்து அடர்ந்தெழுந்து அரும்பு மந்தரம் (sandhu adarndhu ezhundha rumbu mandharam ) : sandalwood trees, mantharam trees with its rich foliage,

செழுங்கரும்பு கந்தரம்பை செண்பதங்கொள் செந்தில் வாழ்வே (chezhum karumbu kandha arambai seNpadham koL sendhilvAzhvE) : succulent sugarcanes, plantain plants with fruits that have grown sky high in ThiruchendhUr, which is Your abode; அரம்பை (arambai) : plantain; கந்த அரம்பை (kandha arambai) : கிழங்குகளுடன் கூடிய வாழை ; சேண்(sEN) : tall, sky;

தண் கடம் கடந்து சென்று பண்கள் தங்கு அடர்ந்த இன்சொல் திண் புனம் புகுந்து கண்டு இறைஞ்சு கோவே (thaN kadam kadandhu sendru paNkaL thangu adarndha insol thiN punam pugundhu kaNdu iRainju kOvE) : You went across the cool forest to VaLLi, whose sweet words sound like a symphony of rich melodies; You entered the rich millet-field to see and beseech her, Oh Lord! குளிர்ந்த காட்டைக் கடந்து சென்று இசைப்பண்கள் யாவும் கூடிச்சேர்ந்தது போன்ற இனிமையான குரலுடைய வள்ளியின் செழிப்பான தினைப்புனத்தை அடைந்து அவளைக் கண்டு, பின்பு கும்பிட்ட தலைவனே,

அந்தகன் கலங்க வந்த கந்தரம் கலந்த சிந்துரம் (anthagan kalanga vandha kandharam kalandha sindhuram) : refers to Deivayanai; She comes to the aid of Your devotees to the consternation of Yaman (God of Death) and resides graciously in the caves of their hearts; She has the complexion of vermilion; (உன் அடியார்களின் இதயமாகிய) குகையில் விருப்புற்று கலந்த குங்கும அழகி தேவயானை; கந்தரம் (kandharam) : cave representing the hearts of devotees ; சிந்துரம் (sindhuram) : red color, elephant, Deivayanai;

சிறந்து வந்து அலம் புரிந்த மார்பா (chiRandhu vandhu alam purindha mArbA) : who hugs Your broad chest with ecstatic relish, Oh Lord!

அம்புனம் புகுந்த நண்பர் (ambunam pugundha naNbar) : Naradha, Your friend, who went to the beautiful millet-field (for Your sake),

சம்பு நல் புரந்தரன் தரம் பல் உம்பர் கும்பர் நம்பு தம்பிரானே. (sambu nan purandharan tharampal umbar kumbar nambu thambirAnE.) : Lord SivA, the good celestial king IndrA, many worthy celestials and Agasthya, the sage who emerged from a pot, always rely on You, Oh Great One! புரந்தரன் (purandharan) : Indra; கும்பர் (kumbhar) : Agastya – Agastya and Vasishtha are known as Kumbha Sambhava (Pot born); தரம்பல் உம்பர் (tarampal umbar) : meritorious devas;
