Pancha Bhoota Sthalas

Lord Shiva controls the 5 elements of nature named as the Pancha Bhutas. The Panchakshara syllables Na | Ma | Shi | Va | Ya represent the five elements, the five building blocks of Creation – Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether.

Pancha Bhuta Sthalas are the five temples in South India, built for each of these five elements. Geographically, they are all within the Deccan Plateau – four in Tamil Nadu and one in Andhra Pradesh. The temple for

  • Water —Thiruvanaikaval
  • Fire —Thiruvannamalai
  • Air — Kalahasti
  • Earth — Kanchipuram
  • Space — Chidambaram
All these temples are geographically placed in almost a straight line. Chidambaram Nataraja Temple, Ekambareswarar Temple, Srikalahasti Temples lie exactly at 79° 41′ E in longitude and the other two temples, Thiruvanaikkaval is located at around 3°S and 1°W of the northern tip exactly of this divine axis, while Thiruvannamalai is around midway at 1.5°S and 0.5°W. The universe is a circle of mountains, oceans and continents arranged in a particular way around a mythical mountain — Kailash / Meru, known as axis mundi or the centre of the world.
