Krishna Leela

Many references to Krishna's divine plays as mentioned in Thiruppugazh have been discussed in an earlier post. In fact the entire Mahabharatham can be described as Krishna's Leela. In this post, however, we are discussing only the childhood leelas as mentioned in Thiruppugazh.

The first Leela is Krishna being tied to the mortar (உரல்). This story occurs in many songs and symbolically shows that though the Lord is beyond anybody's grasp, He allows Himself to be bound by His devotees

  • sivanaar manam kuLira
    நவநீத முந்திருடி உரலோடெ யொன்றுமரி

  • Baby Krishna crawled in between two marutha (Arjuna) trees with the grinding stone tied to his waist. As the trees fell down, the cursed Gandharvas trapped in the tress were released.
The following lines from saruvi igazhnthu mention not only the above story but also the slaying of the demon Sakatasura. Once Yashoda had left behind a sleeping Krishna in a bed under the cart which contained vessels full of milk, curd and butter. Kamsa had sent Sakatasura who took the form of the hand-cart (sakata) to kill baby Krishna. Sakatasura tried to crush the baby, but Krishna kicked the cart, which in turn killed the demon. The cart was overturned spilling the milk, and Lord Krishna simply drank the milk falling into his mouth from the cart.
