Paraphrase

The poet ennumerates the sixteen aspects of Muruga that he will always remember to praise:

சருவி இகழ்ந்து மருண்டு வெகுண்டு உறு ( saruvi igazhndhu maruNdu veguNduRu) : Those deriding each other, getting disillusioned and enraged in various religious debates, மருட்சி (marutchi) : delusion, hallucination; இகழ்ந்து (igazhnthu) : scorn, deride, disparage;

சமயமும் ஒன்று இலை என்றவரும் (samayamum ondru ilai endravarum) : those who deny the existence of religion itself, நெறிமுறை என்றொன்று (அல்லது தெய்வம் என்றொன்று) இல்லை என்பவர்களும்;

பறி தலையரு(ம்) நின்று கலங்க விரும்பிய தமிழ் கூறும் சலிகையு(ம்) ( paRi thalaiyarum nindru kalanga virumbiya thamizh kooRum saligaiyum ) : and the worried bald-headed Jain monks – to the dismay of all these people, You (as ThirugnAna Sambandhar) narrated the adorable songs (ThEvAram) in Tamil. That powerful prestige, பறிதலையராகிய சமண குருமாரும் (மேல் கூறிய மற்றவர்களும்) கலங்க, அனைவரும் விரும்பத்தக்க தமிழ்ப் பாடல்களை (திருஞானசம்பந்தராக) கூறும் செல்வாக்கையும்

நன்றியும் வென்றியும் (nandriyum vendriyum) : altruism and victory, நன்றியும் = உபகார குணத்தையும், வென்றியும் = வெற்றியையும்,

மங்கள பெருமைகளும் கனமும் குணமும் பயில் சரவணமும் ( mangaLa perumaigaLum ganamum guNamum payil saravaNamum) : auspicious glories, splendor, good character, the reed forest (saravana) where You grew up, மங்களம் நிறைந்ததான பலவிதமான பெருமைகளையும், மிகுதியான—அளவிறந்த—நற்குணங்களையும்; (உன்னுடைய குழந்தைப் பருவத்திலே நீ) நடை பழகிய சரவணப் பொய்கையையும்;

பொறையும் புகழும் திகழ் தனி வேலும் ( poRaiyum pugazhum thigazh thani vElum) : tolerance, fame and the unparalleled 'vel', and

விருது துலங்க சிகண்டியில் அண்டரும் உருகி வணங்க வரும் பதமும் (virudhu thulanga sikaNdiyil aNdarum urugi vaNanga varumpadhamum ) : Your feet, worshipped by celestials with great devotion, as you come on a peacock decked with many victory signs (or trophies),

பல விதரணமும் திறமும் தரமும் (pala vitharaNamun thiRamum tharamum ) : many acts of generosity, competence and merit; பலவிதமான கொடை வண்மையையும், உன் சாமர்த்தியத்தையும், தகுதியையும்,

தினை புன மானின் ம்ருகமத குங்கும கொங்கையில் நொந்து அடி வருடி மணந்து புணர்ந்ததுவும் (thinai puna maanin mrigamadha kungkuma kongaiyil nondhuadi varudi maNandhu puNarndhadhuvum) : Your marrying and liaising with Valli, the deer of the millet field, caressing her feet and getting scorched by her musk- and vermilion- (kumkuma) smeared breasts,

பல விஜயமும் அன்பின் மொழிந்து மொழிந்து இயல் மறவேனே( pala vijayamum anbin mozhindhu mozhindhu iyal maRavEnE) : and Your many victories – I will keep talking about all of these and will never forget Your greatness.

The next nine lines speak of the glories of Lord Vishnu, Murugan's uncle.

கருதி இலங்கை அழிந்து விடும்படி (karudhi ilankai azhindhu vidumpadi) : Considering Ravana's atrocities, (Lord Vishnu) destroyed Lanka;

அவுணர் அடங்க மடிந்து விழும்படி (avuNar adanga madindhu vizhumpadi) : killed all of the demons,

கதிரவன் இந்து விளங்கி வரும்படி விடு மாயன் (kadhiravan indhu viLangi varumpadi vidum maayan) : and made the sun and the moon shine once again; He is Lord Vishnu;

கட கரி அஞ்சி நடுங்கி வருந்திடு மடுவினில் வந்து உதவும் புயல் (kada kari anji nadungi varundhidu maduvinil vandhu udhavum puyal) : He is the cloud-complexioned lord who rushed to the lake and helped the horrified aggressive elephant Gajendra, கட கரி(kada kari) : musth elephant (Gajendra); மத யானை;

இந்திரை கணவர் ரங்க முகுந்தன் ( indhirai kaNavan aranga mukundhan) : Lakshmi's husband Mukundan who is reposing at Srirangam;

வரும் சகடு அற மோதி மருது குலுங்கி நலங்க முனிந்திடு வரதன் (varum sagadu aRa mOdhi marudhu kulungi nalanga munindhidu varadhan ) : He is the bestower of boons who broke the cart by kicking it, and also shook the marutha tree ((botanically known as Terminalia arjuna). சகடு (sagadu) : cart;

On the seventh day of his birth Sri Krishna killed SagadAsuran/Shakatasura, by just kicking him with his small soft feet;

As a kid, Krishna crawled in between two Arjuna trees with the grinding stone tied to his waist. As a result the trees broke down and the cursed Gandharvas trapped in the tress were released.

அலங்கல் புனைந்து அருளும் குறள் வடிவன் (alangal punaindh aruLum kuRaL vadivan) : He is the short-staured Vamana who gracefully wears a garland; குறள் வடிவன்(kuRaL vadivan) : short statured, Vishnu in Vamana avatara; அலங்கல் (alangal) : garland;

நெடும் கடல் மங்க ஓர் அம்பு கை தொடும் மீளி மருக ( nedum kadal mangavor ambu kai thodu meeLi maruga) : He is the strong warrior who dried up the entire ocean by aiming an arrow at it (at the time of setu bandhana); You are His nephew; மீளி (meeLi) : strong;

புரந்தரனும் தவம் ஒன்றிய பிரம புரம் தனிலும் ( purandharanum thavam ondriya birama puram thanilum ) : (You reside at) Brahmapura (or Seerkazhi) where Indra performed penances,

குகன் என்பவர் மனதினிலும் பரிவு ஒன்றி அமர்ந்து அருள் பெருமாளே (guhan enbavar manadhinilum pari vondri amarndharuL perumaaLE.) : You also reside with affection in the hearts of those who say "Guha", Oh Lord!
