பிறவியான சடம் இறங்கி வழியி(ல்)லாத துறை செறிந்து (piRaviyaana jadam iRangi vazhi ilaadha thuRai seRindhu) : My life force descends into an assigned body (as dictated by karma) and I walk along bad paths,

பிணிகள் ஆன துயர் உழன்று தடுமாறி (piNigaLaana thuyar uzhandru thadumaaRi) : encounter many diseases and falter through misery,

பெருகு தீய வினையில் நொந்து கதிகள் தோறும் அலை பொருந்தி (perugu theeya vinaiyi nondhu gathigaL thORum alai porundhi) : get caught in multiple bad deeds and as a result, wander restlessly through several births. கதிகள் தோறும் (gathigaL thORum) : through successive births; அலை பொருந்தி (alai porunthi) : getting tossed about, அலைச்சல் அடைந்து;

பிடி படாத ஜனன(ம்) நம்பி அழியாதே (pidi padaadha janana nambi azhiyaadhE) : Instead of getting caught in this incomprehensible cycle of birth, பிடி படாத (pidi padaatha) : incomprehensible, உண்மைத் தனம் விளங்காத;

நறை விழாத மலர் முகந்த அரிய மோன வழி திறந்த நளின பாதம் எனது சிந்தை அகலாதே (naRai vizhaadha malar mugandha ariya mOna vazhi thiRandha naLina paadham enadhu chinthai agalaadhE) : I should constantly meditate on Thy lotus feet that carries honey-dripping flowers and opens up the incomparable silent, transcendental state, நறை (naRai) : honey;

நரர் சுர அதிபரும் வணங்கும் இனிய சேவை தனை விரும்பி (narar suraadhiparum vaNangum iniya sEvai thanai virumbi) : and willingly serve You, who is worshipped by humans and the celestial chiefs;

நலன் அதாக அடியன் என்று பெறுவேனோ (nalanadhaaga adiyan endru peRuvEnO) : will I consider such service as serving my own well being?

பொறி வழாத முநிவர் தங்கள் நெறி வழாத பிலன் உழன்று (pori vazhaadha munivar thangaL neRi vazhaadha pilan uzhandru) : Sage Nakkeerar who controlled his sense organs from going astray and righteously performed his daily religious rites even while suffering in the cave; முநிவர் (munivar) : refers to Sage Nakkeeran; பிலன் (pilan) : cave; பொறி (poRi) : the five sense organs;

பொரு நிசாசரனை நினைந்து வினை நாடி ( poru nisaacha ranai ninaindhu vinainaadi) : and thought of taking action for protecting other sages who were imprisoned in the cave by the demon;

பொரு இலாமல் அருள் புரிந்து மயிலில் ஏறி நொடியில் வந்து (poru ilaamal aruL purindhu mayilinEri nodiyil vandhu) : (as a result,) You ascended the peacock in a trice to shower Your unparalleled grace, பொரு இல்லாமல் (poru ilaamal) : without any comparison;

புளகம் மேவ தமிழ் புனைந்த முருகோனே (puLaga mEva thamizh punaindha murugOnE) : and made Nakkeerar euphoric by accepting his offer of Tamil poetry Thirumurugaatrupadai, Oh, Muruga.

சிறுவராகி இருவர் அந்த கரி பதாதி கொடு பொரு சொல் சிலை இராமனுடன் எதிர்த்து சமர் ஆடி (siRuvaraagi iruvar andha kari padhaadhi kodu porun sol silai iraaman udan edhirndhu samaraadi) : When the two children (Luv and Kush) raised war cries and fought against the army of elephants and foot soldiers and bow-wielding Rama கரி (kari) : elephant; பதாதி (pathaathi) : foot soldiers;

It is said that Lord Rama’s sons Luv and Kush were born at Valmiki’s hermitage that spread from Thiruvanmiyur in Chennai to Siruvapuri in Tiruvallur district. Siruvapuri is supposed to be Siruvar Por Puri – where the duo were supposed to have fought their father.

செயம் அதான நகர் அமர்ந்த அளகை போல வளம் மிகுந்த சிறுவை மேவி வரம் மிகுந்த பெருமாளே. (jeyam adhaana nagar amarndha aLagaipOla vaLamigundha siRuvai mEvi vara migundha perumaaLE.) : and were victorious; that city is prosperous as Kubera's Alagapuri. You reside at Siruvapuri and grant boons to Your devotees, Oh, great one!
