நீல முகில் ஆன குழல் ஆன மடவார்கள் தன நேயம் அதிலே தினமும் உழலாமல் (neela mukil Ana kuzhal Ana madavArkaL thana nEyam athilE thinamum uzhalAmal) : hankering everyday after the bosoms of women with dark blue, cloud-like, hair; முகில் (mugil) : cloud; குழல் (kuzhal) : hair;

நீடு புவி ஆசை பொருள் ஆசை மருள் ஆகி அலை நீரில் உழல் மீன் அது என முயலாமல் (needu puvi Asai poruL Asai maruL Aki alai neeril uzhal meen athu ena muyalAmal) : not exerting myself, like the fish that wanders in the wavy sea, under the illusory desire for acquiring large land and material things; நீண்ட மண், பொன் மீதானவற்றின் மேல் மிகுந்த ஆசை மயக்கம் கொண்டு அதன் காரணமாக அலை வீசும் கடல் நீரில் அங்கும் இங்குமாக அலைந்து திரிந்து உழலுகின்ற மீனைப் போல இரையையே தேடி உழலாமல், மருள் (maruL) : delusion;
சதா நீரிலேயே இரையையே தேடி சுழலும் மீனானது, தனக்கு வைப்பட்ட தூண்டிலில் உள்ள பொருளையும் தனக்குக் கிடைத்த இரை என்று கருதிச் சென்று, உண்ண முயன்று மாண்டு விடும். அதே போல் மனிதனும் உலகியலில் உழன்று, இன்பங்களையே தேடி அலைந்து, அந்த உலக இன்பங்களாலேயே துன்பத்தை அடைந்து, கிடைத்தற்கு அரிய உடலையும், வாழ்நாளையும் வீணாக்கி, மடிகிறான்.
