Paraphrase

செனித்திடும் சலம் சாழலும் ஊழலும் (seniththidum chalam sAzhalum Uzhalum) : This birth is a charade, an obscene game of 'sazhal'! சலம்(chalam) : falsehood; சாழல்(sAzhal) : An ancient game played by girls by reciting a poem whose stanzas are each in the form of a question and answer with the refrain 'sAzhalO' at the end; சாழல் என்பது இரு பெண்கள் விளையாடும் ஒரு வகையான சொல்-விளையாட்டு ஆகும். இதில் ஒரு பெண் இறைவனின் செயல்களை ஏளனப்படுத்திப் பேசுவாள். மற்றொரு பெண் உயர்த்திப் பேசுவாள். முன்னிரண்டடிகள் வினாவும் பின்னிரண்டடிகள் விடையுமாகவும் அவ்விடையிறுதியில் 'சாழலோ' என்ற சொல்லுடையதாக வரும். ;

விளைத்திடும் குடல் பீறியும் மீறிய செருக்கொடும் சதை பீளையும் ஈளையும் உடலூடே(viLaiththidum kudal peeRiyum meeRiya serukkodum sathai peeLaiyum eeLaiyum udalUdE) : arrogance rises piercing through that intestine that are the result of this birth! What an amount of flesh, mucus and phlegm in that body! ஈளை(eeLai) : phlegm;

தெளித்திடும் பல சாதியும் வாதியும் (theLiththidum pala sAthiyum vAthiyum) : Numerous castes (around birth) and numerous people argue about those castes;

இரைத்திடும் குலமே சில கால் படர் சினத்திடும் பவ நோயெனவே (iraiththidum kulamE sila kAl padar sinaththidum bava nOy enavE) : numerous people scream about their lineage! Sometimes distress rises in the form of anger — birth is nothing but a disease, கூச்சலிட்டுப் பேசும் குலத்தவர் என்ன, சில சமயங்களில் துன்பம் கோபித்து எழுவது போல் பிறப்பு என்னும் நோய் என்றே

இதை அனைவோரும் கனைத்திடும் கலி காலம் இதோ என (ithai anaivOrum kanaiththidum kali kAlam ithO ena) : and everyone loudly attributes this miserable life to the havoc played by the present aeon (kaliyugam), இவ்வாழ்வை எல்லோரும் ஒலித்து எழும் கலிகாலத்தின் கூத்தோ இது என்று கூறுவது என்ன,

எடுத்திடும் சுடு காடு புகா என கவிழ்த்திடும் சடமோ பொடியாய் விடும் உடல் பேணி (eduththidum cudu kAdu pukA ena kavizhththidum sadamO podiyAy vidum udal pENi) : People say "Take away this corpse to the cremation ground"; then it gets thrown up side down (from the bier) and is burnt down to ashes; nourishing such a body so caringly,

கடுக்கனும் சில பூடணம் ஆடைகள் இருக்கிடும் கலையே பல ஆசைகள் (kadukkanum sila pUdaNam AdaigaL irukkidum kalaiyE pala AsaigaL) : adorning it with jewellery, including ear-stud, and countless clothes! What an extensive study have I made of the texts to learn manthrAs from the Rig VEdA! கடுக்கன் முதலிய சில அணிகலன்களை அணிவது என்ன, உடைகள் அணிவது என்ன, இருக்கு வேத மந்திரங்களால் பெறப்படும் சாத்திர நூல்களைப் படிப்பது என்ன, இப்படி பல ஆசை வகைகளைக் கொண்டிருப்பது என்ன, பூடணம்(boodaNam) : jewellery, பூஷணம்;

கழித்திடும் சிவ யோகமும் ஞானமும் அருள்வாயே (kazhiththidum siva yOkamum njAnamum aruLvAyE) : To get rid of all these (futile acts), kindly bless me with the Siva-yOgA and Knowledge of SivA! எல்லாவற்றையும் ஒழிக்க வல்ல சிவ யோகமும் ஞானமும் அருள்வாயாக.

தனத்த னந்தன தானன தானன திமித்தி திந்திமி தீதக தோதக தகுத்து துந்துமி (thanaththa nanthana thAnana thAnana thimiththi thinthimi theethaka thOthaka thakuththu thunthumi) : (Sounding to this meter,)

தாரை விராணமொடு அடல் பேரி (thArai virANamodu adal pEri) : Many large drums, thampattais, veerANams and murasus (different kinds of drums) were beaten,

சமர்த்தம் ஒன்றிய தானவர் சேனையை வளைத்து வெம் சினம் வேல் விடு சேவக (samarththam onRiya thAnavar sEnaiyai vaLaiththu vem sinam vEl vidu sEvaga) : when You wielded Your spear with rage, encircling the entire armies of the demons gathered in the battlefield, Oh Mighty One!

சமத்து உணர்ந்திடு மா தவர் பால் அருள் புரிவோனே (samaththu uNarnthidu mA thavar pAl aruL purivOnE) : You bless those great sages who realize Your virtuous qualities!

தினைப் புனம் தனிலே மயலால் ஒரு மயில் பதம் தனிலே சரண் நான் என (thinaip punam thanilE mayalAl oru mayil patham thanilE saraN nAn ena) : In the millet field, out of love for her, You declared before a matchless peacock-like belle, VaLLi, that You were surrendering at her feet,

திருப் புயம் தரு மோகன மானினை அணைவோனே (thirup puyam tharu mOgana mAninai aNaivOnE) : and embraced that enchanting deer (Valli) when she offered her pretty shoulders to You, Oh Lord!

சிவக் கொழும் சுடரே பரனாகிய தவத்தில் வந்தருள் பால க்ருபாகர (sivak kozhum sudarE paranAgiya thavaththil vanthu aruL pAla krupAkara) : You are the reddish effulgence that emerged from Lord SivA! You emanate as the Supreme Lord and grant Grace to those who perform penance, Oh Dear Child! You are the Compassionate Lord! பரனாகிய தவத்தில் வந்து (paranAgiya thavaththil vanthu) : appeared as supreme God for the sake of those who perform penance, தவம் செய்வோர் பொருட்டுப் பரனாகி வெளித் தோன்றி வந்து ;

திருக் குடந்தையில் வாழ் முருகா சுரர் பெருமாளே.(thiruk kudanthaiyil vAzh murukA surar perumALE.) : You have Your abode in this beautiful town, KumbakONam, Oh MurugA! You are the Lord of the celestials, Oh Great One!
