There are two lesser known events that take place before the war. At the center of both the events is Krishna who makes every effort to ensure victory for the Pandavas. The first event ensures that none of the Pandavas will die in the war. The second event ensures that Vidura stays out of the war.

Duryodhana refuses to give the Pandavas their kingdom. Lord Krishna is all set to go to Hastinapura in the last ditch effort to avoid war. Of course, He knows that war is inevitable. But Sahadeva doesn't want war. Krishna tells him that he could try tying Him down and prevent Him from going on a peace mission. When Sahadeva tries to bind Him with a rope, Krishna confuses him by assuming multiple forms. Sahadeva sits in meditation in which He can identify the real Krishna and ties Him down with the rope of love. Krishna explains that war is unavoidable in order to establish Dharma. Sahadeva then releases Him, after extracting the promise that none of the Pandavas would meet death in the war. This event is mentioned in the pasaiyatra song.
வசை அற்று முடிவு அற்று வளர் பற்றின் அளவு அற்ற வடிவு உற்ற முகில் கிட்ணன் மருகோனே

Krishna leaves for Hastinapura. Krishna knows that Bheeshma and Drona had their nemesis – Bheeshma in Shikhandi and Drona in his blind and boundless love for his son Ashwaththama – but Pandavas would be forced to fight with Vidura who had the powerful Vishnu astra that could make him invincible. So He maneuvers in such a way (by not accepting Duryodhana's invitation but staying with Vidura in his palace) that Duryodhana gets very angry with Vidura and insults him in the royal court. Vidura breaks the Vishnu Bow and swears that he would not participate in the war. This important event is mentioned in the following lines in the song chaturaththarai. Here Duryodhana has been referred to metaphorically as the one who has the serpent as the flag staff (அராக்கொடியான்)

விதுரற்கும ராக்கொடி யானையும்
விகடத்துற வாக்கிய மாதவன்
விசையற்குயர் தேர்ப்பரி யூர்பவன் மருகோனே

The 18-day war ensues. Krishna becomes the charioteer for Arjuna, and effectively governs the course of the war. As devotees, all of us would want our lives to be governed the same way. That is why Saint Arunagirinathar has eulogised Krishna as the sarathi or charioteer in several songs.

Another example is that of the song (athala sedan)

One of the important episodes in the war is the killing of Jayadratha by Arjuna, in which Krishna plays a pivotal role by delaying the sunset for a few seconds. The song muththaitharu celebrates this wonderful event.
