Paraphrase

The saint-poet Arunagirinathar contemplates on the interminably long chain of births we undergo and expresses remorse over the emptiness of it all. First, the shell that we call body that is filled with hideous things such as flesh, blood, clusters of nerves, and a lot of muck, including excreta, and infested with all kinds of diseases. Next, the pride we exhibit over this storehouse of delusions. We invest all emotions such as joy, arrogance, conceit and deceit that beguile and prevent us from distinguishing and perceiving the Real from the unreal and the Eternal from the transient. Yet, all these are playful sports for Lord Murugan who creates and destroys the world in an instant.

சுத்திய நரப்புடன் எலுப்பு உறு தசை குடல் ஒடு (suththiya narappudan eluppuRu dasaikkudal) : Coiled clusters of nerves, flesh around the bones, intestines, நரப்பு (narappu) : nerves; எலுப்பு (eluppu) : bones;

அப்பு நிணம் சளி வலிப்பு உடன் இரத்த குகை ( appudan niNa chaLi valippudan iraththa guhai) : water, fat, mucus, bouts of fits, chamber in which blood accumulates (i.e., the heart),

சுக்கிலம் விளை புழுவொடு அக்கையும் அழுக்கும் மயிர் சங்கு மூளை (sukkilam viLai puzhuvodu akkaiyum azhukku mayir sangumULai) : semen, regenerating germs, bones, dirt, hair, brain white as the conch shell, அக்கை (akkai) : bones;

துக்கம் விளைவித்த பிணை அல் கறை முனை பெருகு குட்டமொடு (dhukkam viLaiviththa piNaiyaR kaRai munai perugu kuttamodu) : debilitating fever, stains from dirty discharges, leprosy attacking the tips of the limbs, குட்டம்/குஷ்டம் (kuttam/kushtam ) : leprosy; பிணை = துக்கத்தை விளைவிக்கின்ற சேர்க்கை நோய்; அல் கறை = மாதவிடாய் முதலிய மாசு, menstrual stain;

விப்புருதி புற்று எழுதல் முட்டு வலி (vippurudhi putrezhudhal muttu vali) : abscess, cancer, gangrenous sores, pain in the knee-joints, விப்புருதி ( vippuruthi) : abscess;

துச்சி பிளவை பொருமல் பித்தம் ஒடு உறக்கம் மிக அங்கம் ஊடே (thuchchi piLavai porumal piththamodu Rakkamiga angamUdE) : abscesses eating away the flesh, bloated stomach, biliousness, and excessive sleepiness - all these dominate this body! பிளவை (piLavai) : cluster of boils, carbuncle; துச்சி: eating;

எத்தனை நினைப்பையும் விளைப்பையும் மயக்கம் உறல் (eththanai ninaippaiyum viLaippaiyu mayakkam uRal) : numerous thoughts and actions that cause delusions;

எத்தனை சலிப்பொடு கலிப்பையும் மிடற் பெருமை (eththanai salippodu kalippaiyu midaR perumai) : countless dejections, joys and gloatings about its strength;

எத்தனை கசத்தையும் மலத்தையும் அடைத்த குடில் பஞ்ச பூதம் ( eththanai kasaththaiyu malaththaiyum adaiththa kudil pancha bUtham) : dirty stagnations and faeces occupy this cottage composed of the five elements.

எத்தனை குலுக்கையும் மினுக்கையும் மன கவலை (eththanai kulukkaiyu minukkaiyu manakkavalai) : How much fuss, pretensions and worries occur within this?

எத்தனை கவட்டையும் நடக்கையும் உயிர் குழுமல் ( eththanai kavattaiyum nadakkaiyum uyir kuzhumal) : How many vicious thoughts, actions and interactions with other lives take place? கவ(ட்)டு = கபடம்;

எத்தனை பிறப்பையும் இறப்பையும் எடுத்து உலகில் மங்குவேனோ ( eththanai piRappaiyum iRappaiyum eduththulagil manguvEnO) : How many cycles of deaths and births do I have to undergo before fading into oblivion in this world;

தத்தனத னத்தனத னத்தன என திமிலை (thaththanatha naththanatha naththana ena ththimilai) : The drums were beating to the meter of "thaththanatha naththanatha naththana";

ஒத்த முரச(ம்) துடி இடக்கை முழவு பறைகள் சத்தம் அறைய ( oththa murasam thudi idakkai muzhavu paRaigaL saththam aRaiya) : trumpets, hand-drums and other percussion instruments beaten with the left hand were all making loud noise;

தொகுதி ஒத்த செனி ரத்த வெ(ள்)ள மண்டி ஓட (thogudhi oththa seni raththa veLa maNdi Oda) : gushing fresh blood flowed like a flood and filled the battlefield;

சக்கிரி நெளிப்ப அவுண பிணம் மிதப்ப (chakkiri neLippa avuNappiNami dhappa) : the great serpent, Adhiseshan writhed; corpses of the demons floated in the river of blood;

அமரர் கை தலம் விரித்து அர ஹர சிவ பிழைத்தோம் என ( amarar kaiththalam viriththu arahara siva pizhaiththom ena) : the celestials, with their raised hands, prayed, saying "Oh Hara Hara, Siva, We are saved";

சக்கிரி கிரி சுவர்கள் அக்கணமே பக்கு விட வென்ற வேலா (chakkira giri chuvargaL akkaName pakkuvida vendra vElA) : and the walls of SUran's mountainous fortress, ChakravaLam, were shattered to pieces when You won the war with Your Spear, Oh Lord!

சித்தம் அதில் எத்தனை செகத்தலம் விதித்து உடன் அழித்து ( siththam adhil eththanai jagaththalam vidhiththudan azhiththu) : At Your will, You are capable of creating several worlds and destroying them instantly!

கமலத்தனை மணி குடுமி பற்றி (kamalaththanai maNikkudumi patri ) : You grabbed BrahmA, seated on the lotus, by His pretty tuft,

மலர் சித்திர கர தலம் வலிப்ப பல குட்டி நடனம் கொள் வேளே (malar chiththira karaththalam valippa pala kutti natanam koL vELE) : and repeatedly knocked His head with Your hallowed cute knuckles until they hurt; then You danced triumphantly, Oh Lord! மலர் சித்திர கர தலம் ( malar chiththira karaththalam ) : flower-like, beautiful hands;

செட்டி வடிவை கொடு தினை புனம் அதில் சிறு குற பெண் : ( chetti vadivai kodu thinai punam adhiR siRu kuRappeN) : In the disguise of a bangle merchant, You went to the millet-field to woo the pretty little damsel of the KuRavAs, VaLLi,

முருகவேள் வள்ளியிடம் வேடனாகவும், வேங்கை மரமாகவும், வளையல்காரனாகவும், தவ முதியோனாகவும் சென்று ஏமாற்றித் திருவிளையாடல் புரிந்தருளினார்.

தெட்டி வந்து, புலியூரின் மன்றுள் வளர்பெருமாளே. (கட்டி முண்டக)
பெரம்பலூர் மாவட்டத்தில் செட்டிகுளம் என்ற ஸ்தலத்தில் தண்டாயுதபாணி எனும் திருநாமத்துடன் கையில் கரும்பு ஏந்தி, காட்சி தந்து அருள்பாலிக்கிறார் முருகப் பெருமான். அந்தக் காலத்தில் கடம்ப மரங்கள் சூழ்ந்த வனமாக இருந்த இந்தப் பகுதியில் அகத்திய மாமுனிவர் தவம் செய்யும் போது வளையல் விற்கும் செட்டி வணிகர் போல் அகத்தியருக்கு காட்சி தந்து அருளினார் என்கிறது கோயிலின் ஸ்தல புராணம்.

அமளிக்குள் மகிழ் செட்டி ( amaLikkuL magizh chetti ) : and enjoyed her company in her bed, Oh Lord!

குரு வெற்பில் உறை சிற் பரமருக்கு ஒரு குருக்கள் என முத்தர் புகழ் தம்பிரானே. (guruveRpil uRai siRparamarukkoru gurukkaL ena muththar pugazh thambirAnE.) : "You are the Unique Master of Lord SivA, seated as the Symbol of True Knowledge in SwAmimalai" - so praise the emancipated ones, and You are their Lord, Oh Great One! குரு வெற்பு (guru veRpu) : guru mountain or Swamimalai;
