Paraphrase

In this beautiful song, Saint Arunagirinathar seeks Lord's Grace to attain 'siva-yoga' (whereby the soul realises the omnitude of Šiva and sets to merge Itself with Him without losing its individuality), by following the traditional 'Guru Sampradaya' tradition.

ஐந்து பூதமும் ஆறு சமயமும் (aindhu bUthamum ARu samayamum) : All the five Elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Cosmos), the six religious sects (Saivam, Vaishnavam, SAktham, GANApathyam, Kaumaram and Sauram),

மந்த்ர வேத புராண கலைகளும் (manthra vEdha purANa kalaigaLum) : the ManthrAs, the scriptures, the purANAs, the arts,

ஐம்பதோர் விதமான லிபிகளும் (aimbathOr vidhamAna lipigaLum) : the fifty-one different alphabets (of the Sanskrit language),

வெகுரூப அண்டர் ஆதி சராசரமும் (vegu rUpa aNda rAdhi sarAsaramum) : the DEvAs in different forms and the universe having movable and immovable objects, சராசரம் (charaacharam) : moveable and immoveable, animate and inanimate; அண்டர் (andar) : devas, the celestials;

உயர் புண்டரீகனு மேக நிறவனும் (uyar puNdareeKanum mEga niRavanum) : the Great BrahmA, Vishnu with the complexion of dark cloud, புண்டரீகம் (pundareegam) : lotus; உயர் புண்டரீகன் (uyar pundareegan) : the lofty Brahma (who sits in the lotus flower); மேக நிறவன் (mEga niRavan) : one with the complexion of the cloud; Vishnu;

அந்தி போல் உருவானும் (andhi pOluru vAnu) : One with the form of the reddish setting sun, i.e., Shiva; அந்தி வானம் போன்ற செம்மேனியுடைய உருத்திர மூர்த்தியும்,

நிலவொடு வெயில் காலும் சந்த்ர சூரியர் தாமும் (nilavodu veyil kAlum chandhra sUriyar thAmum) : the moon and the sun throwing cool moonlight and hot sunlight respectively, வெயில் காலும் = வெயிலை வீசுகின்ற,

அசபையும் (asabaiyum) : the ajapa mantra (Hamsa ManthrA),
Japa means repeating or remembering a mantra, and ajapa-japa means constant awareness of the mantra, and what it represents. The practitioner of the Ajapa does not "chant", since the mantra has begun to come naturally, turning it into a constant awareness.

விந்து நாதமும் ஏக வடிவம் (vindhu nAdhamum Eka vadivam) : b(v)inthu and natham (explained in the following section) - a combination of all of these as a single entity,

அதன் சொரூபம் அதாக உறைவது சிவயோகம் (adhan sorUpam adhAga uRaivadhu siva yOgam) : realizing the universal and eternal form of this single entity, and being rooted in it is Siva-yOgA

தங்கள் ஆணவ மாயை கரும மலங்கள் போய் (thangaL ANava mAyai karuma malangaL pOy) : For the destruction of egoes, delusions and karmas of individuals,

உபதேச குருபர சம்ப்ரதாயமொடு (upadhEsa gurupara sampradhAyamodu) : one has to follow the conventional Master-Student tradition, சம்ப்ரதாயமொடு = தொன்றுதொட்டு வருகின்ற நியமத்துடன்,

(Eyu neRiyadhu peRuvEnO) : and will I be fortunate to follow the traditional line and obtain Your preaching?

வந்த தானவர் சேனை கெடிபுக (vandha dhAnavar sEnai kedi puga) : The confronting armies of asuras (demons) were scared away; தானவர் (thAnavar) : asuras; கெடி (kedi) : fear; அச்சம்;

ஹரஹர சங்கரா என (harahara sankarA ena) : rejoiced and chanted "Hara Hara, SankarA"

மேரு கிரிதலை மண்டு தூளெழ (mEru girithalai maNdu thUL ezha) : and the peaks of Mount MEru were swept by enormous dust; மகா மேருகிரியில் உச்சியில் நெருங்கிய புழுதி உண்டாகவும்,

வேலை உருவிய வயலூரா (vElai uruviya vayalUrA) : when You threw Your mighty Spear, Oh Lord of VayalUr!

Inside the caves in the hills of Viralimalai, siddha purushas, who constantly wear the sacred ash, are deeply immersed in meditative samadhi.

வெந்த நீறணி வேணி இருடிகள் (vendha neeRaNi vENi irudigaL) : The sages with matted lock who wear the holy ash baked in fire on their foreheads,

: That VirAlimalai is Your abode, Oh Great One!

Vinthu Natham

Sivam – God’s natural form(Sorubam), initiates creation with his knowledge (gnanam).
Sakthi – God decides to bestow his grace on souls by activating his energy (sakthi).
Naatham – God’s form changes to sound (naatham) when using his gnanasakthi.
Vinthu – God’s form changes to light (vinthu) when he utilises his kriya sakthi. (Courtesy : https://www.facebook.com/shaivam/posts/508532559169921)

Om, Panchatchara, Ganesha mantra, Subramanya mantra and Devi mantra denote the Samashti (universal or paramatma) Pranava; when analyzed i.e., regarded as Vyashti (individual soul), it becomes divided into Natham (sound), Vinthu (light), a, u, and m. ‘a’ represents creation or origin, as it denotes the origin of all sounds. ‘u’ or ‘oo’ represents sthithi, and ‘m’ represents Samharam. B(v)inthu and Natham are the form and sound of these letters. The symbol of Vinthu is a circle and that of Natham is a line. These two in fact, constitute the Pranava symbol o – or உ (Pillayar suzhi).
