In the Tamil literary tradition called ‘agaththuRai’, it is customary to consider oneself as a woman longing for her lord. In one of the practice in these poetry called ‘dhUthu’, the nayika sends various creatures such as parrot, swan, etc. to be her messenger and tell her lord about her state. The songs also describe the pangs of separation the nayika feels when separated from her Lord, and how various events around her– the roar of the sea, the cool moonlit night, etc., exacerbate the pain.
