Meaning

அச்சப்பட குரல் முழக்கி பகட்டி அலறி கொட்டமிட்டு அமரிடும் (achappadak kural muzhakkip pagatti alaRik kottamittu amaridum) : It fights raising a terrifying din; it becomes frolicky and boisterous and chases away the enemies; அமர் (amar): war; கொட்டம் (kottam): frolicky and boisterous;

அற்பக் குறப் பலிகள் வெட்டுக்கள் பட்டு கடி அறு குழைகளை கொத்தியே ( aRpak kuRap palikaL vettukkaL pattu kadi aRukuzhai kaLaik koththiyE) : It digs into the offerings made to small goddesses, pokes at the cut flesh and leaves;

பிச்சு சினத்து உதறி (pichu sinaththu uthaRi) : It tears into pieces and scatters them away hither and thither;

எட்டுத் திசைப் பலிகள் இட்டு கொதித்து விறலே பெற்று (ettuth thisaip palikaL ittuk kothiththu viRalE petrru) : as though making offerings to the eight directions, thereby deriving strength;

சுடர் சிறகு தட்டி (sudar chiRagu thatti ) : It flutters its radiant plumes,

இயல் பெற கொக்கரித்து வருமாம் (iyal peRak kokkariththu varumaam) : and comes with a charming cackle;

To whom does this Rooster belong?

பொய்ச் சித்திரப் பலவும் உட்க ( poy chiththirap palavum utkath) : He frightened away many religions full of lies and imaginations;

திரைச் சலதி பொற்றை கறுத்து அயில் விடும் (thirai chalathi potrraik kaRuththu ayil vidum) : He wielded His radiant ‘vel’ on the wavy sea and on the Krauncha giri and turned it into ashes;

புத்தி பிரியத்தன் (buththi priyaththan) : He is full of knowledge and compassion;

வெகு வித்தைக் குணக் கடல் (vegu viththaik guNakkadal) : He is deeply proficient in all

புகழ் செட்டி சுப்ரமணியன் (Pugazh chetti subramaNiyan) : He is the renowned Chetti Subramanian; People belonging to the Chetti caste engage in business. The word ‘Chetti” is used to remind the fact that Murugan came to Valli as a bangle seller. Murugan exchanges salvation in return for the deep devotion of His followers.

நவ ரத்ன க்ரிடத்தன் (nava rathna kridaththan). He wears a crown which is studded with the new precious stones; மொழி தித்திக்கும் முத்தமிழினை தெரிய வரு பொதிகை மலை முனிவர்க்கு உரைத்தவன் (mozhi thiththikkum muththamizhinai theriya varu pothigaimalai munivarkku uraiththavan) : He taught literature, drama and music, the three branches of the sweet and ancient Tamil language, to Sage Agastya who had come to Podhigai mountain to learn.

சேவல் திருத் துவசமே (sEval thiruth thuvasamE) : It is the banner in His hands where the Rooster resides.
