(Edhu budhdhi aiyA enakku) : Where is my intelligence, oh LORD!

இனி யாரை நத்திடுவேன் ( ini yArai naththiduvEn) : Who shall I seek lovingly as a refuge/support, henceforth?

அவத்தினிலே இறத்தல் கொலோ (avaththinilE yiRaththal kolO) : Should I die after a futile life?

எனக்குனி தந்தை தாய் என்றே இருக்கவும் நானும் இப்படியே தவித்திடவோ (enakku ni thandhai thAy endrE irukkavum nAnum ippadiyE thaviththidavO) : Despite Your being my father and mother, must I remain tormented like this?

சகத்தவர் ஏசலில் படவோ (jagaththavar EsaliR padavO) : Should I become the object of ridicule in this world?

நகைத்தவர் கண்கள் காணப் பாதம் வைத்திடு ஐயா (nagaiththavar kaNkaL kANa pAdham vaiththidaiyA) : Place Thy feet on me right before the eyes of those who snicker at me.

தெரித்து எனை தாளில் வைக்க நியே மறுத்திடில் பார் நகைக்குமையா ( theriththenai thALil vaikka niyE maRuththidil pAr nagaikkum aiyA) : Despite knowing my condition, if You refuse to place me at Thy feet, the entire world will laugh at us, Oh Lord! தெரித்து/தெரிந்து ( theriththu/therinthu ) : knowing, பார் (paar) : world;

தகப்பன் முன் மைந்தன் ஓடி பால்மொழிக் குரல் ஓலம் இட்டிடில் ( thagappan mun maindhanOdi pAl mozhikural Ola mittidil) : When the child runs screaming to his father with the aroma of milk still fresh in his mouth, பால் மொழி குரல் = பால் மணம் மாறாத இனிய குரல்; பால் வேண்டும் குறிப்பு மொழிக் குரல்;

யார் எடுப்பதெனா வெறுத்தழ பார் விடுப்பர்களோ (yAr eduppadhe nA veRuththazha pAr viduppargaLO) : will the father think disgustedly as to who would pick him up and leave the crying child on the floor?

எனக்கிது சிந்தியாதோ (enakkidhu chindhiyAdhO) : Why doesn't this thought occur to me?

ஓதம் உற்றெழு பால் கொதித்தது போல எட்டிகை நீசமுட்டரை (Odham utrezhu pAl kodhiththadhu pOla ettigai neesa muttarai ) : The wicked and foolish demons came surging from all the eight directions like an milky ocean that simmered like the boiling milk, ஓதம் (otham) : sea; எட்டிகை/எட்டு திசை ( ettu thigai) : eight directions; முட்டர் (muttar ) : foolish;

ஓட வெட்டிய பாநு சத்தி கை எங்கள் கோவே (Oda vettiya bAnu saththikai engaLkOvE ) : Oh our Lord!

ஓத மொய்ச்சடையாட உற்றமர் மான் மழுக் கரம் ஆட (Odha moycchadai Ada utramar mAn mazhu karam Ada) : The tresses holding the River Ganga and the hands holding snugly the deer and the pick-axe danced; ஓத மொய்ச் சடை (Odha moycchadai ) : The tresses with the sea (River Ganges); மழு (mazhu) : pick-axe;

பொற் கழலோசை பெற்றிடவே நடித்தவர் தந்த வாழ்வே (poR kazhal Osai petridavE nadiththavar thandhavAzhvE) : and the anklets on His holy feet made lilting sounds while He danced; That Lord Shiva gave You to us!
