கனைத்த திர்க்குமிப் பொங்கு கார்க்கடலொன்றினாலே
கறுத்த றச்சிவத் தங்கி வாய்த்தெழுதிங்களாலே
தனிக்க ருப்புவிற் கொண்டு வீழ்த்தசரங்களாலே
தகைத்தொ ருத்தியெய்த் திங்கு யாக்கைசழங்கலாமோ
தினைப்பு னத்தினைப் பண்டு காத்தம டந்தைகேள்வா
திருத்த ணிப்பதிக் குன்றின் மேற்றிகழ்கந்தவேளே
பனைக்க ரக்கயத் தண்டர் போற்றியமங்கைபாகா

Paraphrase

The poem, written in the Nayaka-Nayaki bhava (agam poetry), describes the pangs of separation that have been aggravated by the roar of the sea, the cool rays of the moon that feels unbearably hot, and so on.

கனைத்து அதிர்க்கும் இ பொங்கு கார் கடல் ஒன்றினாலே (kanaiththu adhirkkum ip pongu kArkkadal ondrinAlE) : This dark sea resounding with roaring waves;கார் (kaar) : dark;

கறுத்து அற சிவத்து அங்கி வாய்த்து எழு திங்களாலே (kaRuththu aRa sivaththu angi vAyththu ezhu thingaLAlE) : the moon, red with anger and burning like fire; கோபித்து மிகச் சிவந்து போய் நெருப்பின் சூட்டினைப் பூண்டு கொண்டு உதித்த சந்திரனாலே, அங்கி (angi) : fire; திங்கள்(thingaL) : moon;

தனி கருப்பு வில் கொண்டு வீழ்த்த சரங்களாலே (thani karuppu viR kondu veezhththa sarangaLAlE) : the flowery arrows shot from the bow of sugarcane by Manmathan (Love God); and

தகைத்து ஒருத்தி எய்த்து இங்கு யாக்கை சழங்கலாமோ (thagaiththu oruththi yaiththu ingu yAkkai sazhangalAmO:) : due to the pangs of separation from You, MurugA, this woman is suffering in solitude; does she deserve to be in this state? வாட்டத்தால் தனித்த ஒருத்தியாம் இந்தத் தலைவி இளைப்புற்று இங்கு உடல் தளரலாமோ? தகைத்து (thagaiththu) : வாட்டமுற்று; யாக்கை ( yaakkai ) : body; சழங்கு ( sazhangu ) : to become fatigued; எய்த்து (yaiththu ) : become emaciated/thin;

தினை புனத்தினை பண்டு காத்த மடந்தை கேள்வா (thinai punaththinai paNdukAththa madandhai kELvA ) : You are the husband of VaLLi, the damsel who protected the millet field from the birds; கேள்வா (kELvA) : husband;

திருத்தணி பதி குன்றின் மேல் திகழ் கந்த வேளே (thiruththaNi padhi kundrin mEtrigazh kandha vELE) : You reside at the mount at ThiruththaNigai, Oh KanthA, my Lord!

பனை கர கயத்து அண்டர் போற்றிய மங்கை பாகா (panai kara kayaththu aNdar pOtriya mangai bAgA) : DEvAs who have AirAvatham, the white elephant with a trunk as thick as the palm tree, worship DEvayAnai; and You are her consort. கயம் (kayam ) : elephant; here, Indra's Airavata;

படைத்து அளித்து அழிக்கும் த்ரி மூர்த்திகள் தம்பிரானே. (padaiththu aLiththu azhikkum thri mUrthigaL thambirAnE.) : You are above the Trinity of BrahmA, Vishnu and SivA who take care respectively of Creation, Protection and Destruction, Oh Great One!
