Paraphrase

The first four lines describe how far the poet had to walk in search of patrons for their literary work; but these patrons often turned out to be slimy and unwilling to reward.

கதிரவன் எழுந்து உலாவு திசை அளவு கண்டு (kadhiravan ezhundhu ulAvu thisai aLavu kaNdu ) : I walk all the way along the trajectory of the sun as it rises and moves; சூரியன் உதித்துச் செல்லும் எல்லை அளவைச் சென்று கண்டும்,

மோது கடல் அளவு கண்டு மாய மருளாலே (mOthu kadal aLavu kaNdu mAya maruLAlE) : Driven by the illusion (the ignorance cause by maya), I travel across the depth of the vast sea with splashing waves, and உலக மாயை என்னும் மயக்கத்தால், மோதும் அலைகளை உடைய கடலின் எல்லை அளவைப் போய்க் கண்டும்,

கண பண புயங்க ராஜன் முடி அளவு கண்டு தாள்கள் கவின் அற நடந்து தேயும் வகையே போய் (kaNa paNa puyanga rAjan mudi aLavu kaNdu thALkaL kavin aRa nadanthu thEyum vagaiyE pOy ) : I travel across the depth of the vast sea with splashing waves, and reach the frontier of the great serpent-king, AdhisEshan who has a bunch of hoods; my feet became weary due to excessive wandering everywhere; கூட்டமான படங்களை உடைய பாம்பு அரசனாகிய ஆதிசேஷனின் எல்லை அளவைப் போய்க் கண்டும், கால்கள் எங்கெங்கும் அலைந்து என் அழகு குலைய நடந்து தேயுமாறு அங்கங்கே சென்று, கணம் (gaNam) : crowd, group; பணம் (paNam) : head of a serpent; புயங்க ராஜன் (buyanga raajan) : king of serpents or the thousand hooded Adisesha; கவின் (kavin) : beauty; முடி அளவு கண்டு (mudi aLavu kaNdu) : Shesha is said to hold the earth on his hoods; the poet walked so much as to wear out the ground underneath and expose Adisesha's hoods underneath;

இதம் இதம் என்று நாளு(ம்) மருக அருகிருந்து கூடும் இடம் இடம் இது என்று சோர்வு படையாதே (itham itham enRu nALu(m) maruka arukirunthu kUdum idam idam ithu enRu sOrvu padaiyAthE ) : thinking that this would be the nice place, I approached the homes of the stingy; in order that I do not get distressed by such experiences, இது நல்ல இடம் என்று எண்ணி லோபிகளுடைய சமீபத்தில் அணுகிச் சேர்ந்து, இதுதான் சரியான இடம் என்று எண்ணி மனத் தளர்ச்சி கொள்ளாமல்,

இசையொடு புகழ்ந்த போது நழுவிய ப்ரசண்டர் வாசல் இரவு பகல் சென்று வாடி உழல்வேனோ (isaiyodu pukazhntha pOthu nazhuviya prasaNdar vAsal iravu pagal senRu vAdi uzhalvEnO) : as when I stood there praising them with musical poems and felicitations, those cunning people used to slip away quietly; is it fair that I have to knock about their doors, day and night, and suffer in agony? அந்த உலோபியர் வீடுகளுக்கு இரவு பகலாகச் சென்று அடைந்து, அவர்களை இசைப்பாட்டாலும் உரைநடையாலும் புகழுகிறேன்; அப்போது அந்த உலோபர்கள் மெல்ல நழுவுவதை கண்டு வாட்டமடைந்து உழலுவேனோ?

மதுகரம் இடைந்து வேரி தரு நறவம் உண்டு (mathukaram idainthu vEri tharu naRavam uNdu) : The beetles huddle together to ingest fragrant honey; வண்டுகள் நிறைந்து வாசனை வீசும் தேனை உண்டு, மதுகரம் ( madhukaram ) : honey bees; வேரி தரு ( vEri tharu) : giving fragrance; நறவம் (naRavam ) : honey; நறவம் என்பது கொத்துக்கொத்தாகப் பூக்கும் மலர். தேனை குறிக்கும் உருவகமாக இங்கு பயன் படுத்தப்பட்டிருக்கிறது.

பூக மலர் வள நிறைந்த பாளை மலரூடே (pUka malar vaLa niRaintha pALai malarUdE) : and settle down in the rich pALai flowers of the betelnut trees; கமுக மரத்தில் பூவின் வளப்பம் உள்ள பாளை மலர்களின் இடையே, பூகம் (poogam) : betelnut or arecanut;

வகை வகை எழுந்த சாம அதி மறை வியந்து பாட (vagai vagai ezhuntha sAma athi maRai viyanthu pAda) : and then they (the bees) in well-formed swarms sing so that it sounds amazingly like the SAma VEdA! வகை வகையான நாதத்துடன் எழுந்து, சாமம் என்ற சிறந்த வேதமோ என்று வியக்குமாறு ஒலிக்க,

மதி நிழல் இடும் சுவாமி மலை வாழ்வே (mathi nizhal idum suvAmi malai vAzhvE: ) : The moon beams its cool rays on Mount SwAmimalai (ThiruvEragam), and You are its Treasure! மதி நிழல் இடும் (mathi nizhal idum suvAmi) : the moon casting a cool shadow;

அதிர வரு சண்ட வாயு என வரு கரும் கலாப அணி மயில் விரும்பி ஏறும் இளையோனே (athira varu saNda vAyu ena varu karum kalApa aNi mayil virumpi ERum iLaiyOnE) : You mount happily the beautiful peacock with dark blue plumes and marches like the typhoon that shakes the entire world, Oh Young One!

அடைவொடு உலகங்கள் யாவும் உதவி நிலை கண்ட பாவை அருள் புதல்வ அண்ட ராஜர் பெருமாளே (adaivodu ulakangaL yAvum uthavi nilai kaNda pAvai aruL puthalva aNda rAjar perumALE) : You are the son of DEvi PArvathi who has created the entire universe in a methodical way and made sure they remained stable! You are the Lord of all celestials, Oh Great One! முறையோடு எல்லா உலகங்களையும் படைத்து, அவற்றை நிலைபெறச் செய்கின்ற உமாதேவியார் ஈன்ற புதல்வரே! தேவ மன்னர்களள் போற்றும் பெருமை மிகுந்தவரே!
