Paraphrase

The poet entreats that one must share food, however little, with the needy, without postponing thoughts of charity. Otherwise, we would be ridiculed for hoarding wealth that would not serve any purpose at the time of death when Yama snatches away the life leaving us with no options for any act of philanthropy.

அமுத உததி விடம் உமிழும் செம் கண் (amudha udhathi vidam umizhu sem kaN) : With red eyes spewing the poison that came from the Milky Ocean; உததி (udhathi): Ocean;

திங்கள் பகவின் ஒளிர் வெளிறு எயிறு (tingaL pagavin oLir veLiRu eyiRu) : and teeth shining like the crescent moon; திங்கள் (tingaL) : Moon, பகவு (pagavu) : portion/fraction/segment; எயிறு (eyiRu) : teeth;

துஞ்சல் குஞ்சி தலையும் உடையவன் அரவ தண்ட சண்ட சமன் ஓலை (thunjal kunji thalaiyum udaiyavan arava thaNda chaNda saman Olai ) : Yama, with his curly tuft of hair, loud noise, mace (dandayutha weapon), anger and the palm-leaf manuscript containing the death message ('olai'); அரவ (arava) : noise; சமன் (saman) : equality; refers to Yama who ignores all man made inequalities; ஏற்றத்தாழ்வின்மையுடன் செயல்படும் யமன்; அரவ தண்ட = பேரொலியுடன் வந்து (உயிர்களை மரண சமயத்தில்) தண்டிக்கும்; துஞ்சல் குஞ்சி தலை = சுருளுகின்ற தன்மையுடைய குடுமி உடைய தலை; குஞ்சி = குடுமி;

அது வருகும் அளவில் உயிர் அங்கிட்டு இங்கு (adhu varugum aLavil uyir angittu ingu) : When Yama comes (as described above), the life drifts between this world and the other

பறை திமிலை திமிர்தம் மிகு தம்பட்டம் பல் கரைய (paRai thimilai thimirtham migu thambattam pala karaiya) : Various drums beat and boom; பறையும், மற்ற முரசு வகைகளும், பேரொலி மிக்க தம்பட்டம் முதலிய பல வாத்தியங்களும் ஒலிக்கவும்,

உறவினர் அலற உந்தி சந்தி தெருவூடே ( uRavinar alaRa undhi chandhi theruvUdE) : Relatives holler as the body is taken out in a procession.

எமது பொருள் எனும் மருளை இன்றிக் (emadhu poruL enum maruLai indri) : (Before such a time comes), without any illusion that this (property) is mine

குன்றிப் பிளவளவு தினையளவு பங்கிட்டு உண்கைக்கு (kundri piLavaLavu thinaiyaLavu pangittu uNkaiku) : let me share at least a portion of my food; தினை (thinai) is a very small grain; குன்றி மணி (kundrumaNi) is a small seed. I should unhesitatingly share at least a tiny portion of food the size of a fraction of thinai or kundrumaNi.

இளைய முது வசை தவிர இன்றைக்கு அன்றைக்கு என நாடாது (iLaiya mudhu vasai thavira indRaikku andRaikku enanAdAdhu) : so that nobody curses me (for being miserly). I should not dilly dally about giving charity

இடுக கடிது எனும் உணர்வு பொன்றி கொண்டிட்டு (iduga kadidhu enum uNarvu pondri koNdittu) : While lying lifeless, and all thoughts of immediate charity vanish, தர்மம் இப்போதே செய்வாயாக என்னும் உணர்வு அழிந்து போக (உடலை) எடுத்துக் கொண்டு; பொன்றுதல் = அழிதல்;

டுடுடுடு டுடுடுடுடு டுண்டுட் டுண்டுட்டு என அகலும் நெறி கருதி நெஞ்சத்து அஞ்சி பகிராதோ (dududududu dududududu duNdut duNduttu ena agalum neRi karudhi nenjath thu anji pagirAdhO) : will I consider, fearing the irreversible fate of the day when I am (my body is) accompanied by the sound 'dududududu dududududu duNdut duNduttu' (and I lose all the thoughts of charity), and start sharing this very instant?

The following lines describe the scene as Shiva, with Parvati by the side, dances. When He dances, the matted hair, crescent moon and the Ganges river dance too, the anklets jingle, and the damaru beats in harmony with His dance.
குமுத மலரின் நாயகனான பூரண சந்திரன் ஒரு அமுதக் கலசம். அந்தக் கலசத்தின் ஒரு விள்ளல் தான் பிறை நிலவு. ஜடாமுடியில் சூடிய அந்தப் பிறை நிலவிருந்து அமிர்தம் தளும்பிச் சொட்ட, திருப்பாதங்களோடு கொஞ்சி விளையாடும் சிலம்புகளின் இனிய நாதத்தில் வேத கோஷம் பிறந்து பரவ, ஜடாமுடி பிரிந்து, விரிந்து பறக்க, சந்திரசேகரன் ஆடுகிறான். பாகம் பிரியாளான பார்வதியும் பாங்காய் உடன் ஆட, ஜடாமுடியில் ஏந்தி இருக்கும் கங்கையாம் மங்கையும் அசைந்து இசைந்து ஆட, ஸ்வரங்களாய், ராகங்களாய், லயமாய், நயமான இசை வெள்ளம் பொங்கி வர ஐயன் ஆடுகிறான். அவன் வீரக் கழல்களாம் கண்டா மணிகள் கலீர் கலீர் என ஒலி எழுப்ப, முழவுகள் அதிர, மேளங்கள் முழங்க, செக்கச் சிவந்த கரத்தால் உடுக்கையை லாவகமாய் அசைத்து, லயத்திலே லயித்து, பரதக் கலையின் நுணுக்கங்கள் தன் ஆடலில் விளங்க ஆடுகிறான்.

குமுத பதி வகிர் அமுது சிந்த சிந்த (kumudhapathi vagir amudhu chindha chindha) : The crescent moon sheds its nectar;குமுதம் (kumudam) is a flower (water lily?) that blooms in moonlight; குமுத பதி (kumudapathi) : moon.

சரண பரிபுர சுருதி கொஞ்ச கொஞ்ச (charaNapari purasurudhi konjak konja) : The anklets on His feet intone the vedas; சரண பரிபுரம் (charaNa paripuram) : anklets; சுருதி (suruthi) : vedas;

குடில சடை பவுரி கொடு தொங்க பங்கில் கொடியாட (kudila sadai bavurikodu thonga pangil kodiyAda) : the tilted and matted haired Shiva dances the 'bavuri'(a form of dance) and the creeper-like Parvati dances by His side; பங்கில் கொடியாட (pangil kodiyAda) : Parvati resides on the left side of Shiva, 'pangu' refers to portion. 'kodi' means creeper; thus, the creeper-like Parvati on the (left) side of Shiva; bavuri is a form dance performed in a circle; பவுரி = மண்டலமிடுதல் ; மண்டலமாய் ஆடும் கூத்து வகை;

குல தடினி அசைய இசை பொங்க பொங்க (kula thadini asaiya isai pongap ponga) : the river Ganges sways and music cadences rhythmically like waves; தடினி (thadini) : river

கழல் அதிர (kazhaladhira ) : the jingles on the anklets shake

டெகு டெகுட டெங்கட் டெங்க தொகுகுகுகு தொகுகுகுகு தொங்கத் தொங்க தொகுதீதோ திமிதம் என முழவு ஒலி முழங்க (degudeguda dengat denga thogukugugu thogukugugu thongath thongath thogutheedhO dhimidhamena muzhavu oli muzhanga ) : various instruments make the sound 'degudeguda dengat denga thogukugugu thogukugugu thongath thongath thogutheedhO thimitham'

செம் கை தமருகம் அது அதிர் சதியொடு அன்பர்க்கு இன்ப திறம் உதவும் (chem kai thamarugam athu adhir sadhiyodu anbarkku inba thiRam udhavum) : In unison with the dance, the damaru on His reddish (red is symbolic of vital life force) hands clang and all this take the devotees into a trance; சிவந்த திருக்கரத்திலுள்ள உடுக்கையானது அதிரும் தாளவொத்துடனும் அன்பு செய்யும் அடியார்க்கு என்றும் அழியாத இன்ப நலனை வழங்கும்

பரத குரு வந்திக்கும் சற் குருநாதா (baratha guru vandhikkum saRgurunAthA) : You are worshiped by the guru of Bharat Natya (Shiva)! பரத நடனத்திற்கு ஆசிரியராகிய சிவபெருமான் வணங்குகின்ற ஞானாசிரியரே

The following lines describe the beauty of Tiruchendur temple located on the sea shore.

திரளும் மணி தரளம் உயர் தெங்கில் தங்கி புரள எறி திரை (thiraLum mani tharaLam uyar thengil tangi puraLa eRi thirai) : the gems and precious stones hurled from the sea settle on the tall coconut leaves; திரை (thirai) : means waves, and is the metaphor for the sea.

மகர சங்க துங்க திமிர சல நிதி தழுவு செந்தில் கந்த பெருமாளே.( makara sanga thunga thimira chala nidhi thazhuvu chendhil kandha perumaLE.) : the Lord of Tiruchendur that is caressed by the dark sea with the makara fish and Shankha (conch shell)! மகர மீன்களின் கூட்டத்தையுடையதும், தூய்மையுடையதும், இருள்போல் கருநிறத்தை உடையதும் ஆகிய கடல் அணைந்துள்ள செந்திலம்பதியில் வாழுகின்ற கந்தப்பெருமானே! சல நிதி (chala nidhi) : Sea; திமிர (thimira) : Dark;
