Paraphrase

In the first few lines, the saint describes Yama, the god of death, and prays to Muruga to come to his aid when Yama comes at his door.

பஞ்ச பாதகம் உறு பிறை எயிறு (panja pAthagam uRu piRai yeyiRu) : எயிறு (eyiRu) means teeth and பிறை எயிறு (piRai yeyiRu) teeth like the crescent moon. Depending on the meaning of உறு which can mean either 'attacking' or 'suffused with', the lines could refer to Yama who attacks the doer of 'pancha pathaka' or the five sins of lying, stealing, murdering, drinking and abusing guru or the spiritual teacher; or it could refer to Yama's teeth, which are the store-houses of the five sins. பிறைச் சந்திரனை அணிந்தவனும், கள், களவு, கொலை, பொய், காமம் (பிறர் மனைவியை விரும்பும் காமம்) என்ற பஞ்ச பாதகங்களைத் தாக்கி அழிப்பவனுமாகிய கூற்றுவன் / ஐந்து பாதகமும் குடிகொண்ட பிறைச் சந்திரனை ஒத்த பற்கள் உடைய யமன்; உறு என்றால் மிகுந்திருப்பது அல்லது பகை.

எரி குஞ்சி கூர் விட(ம்) மதர் விழி (eri kunji kUr vida mathar vizhi ) : hair like the burning fire and eyes emitting venomous poison; நெருப்புப் போன்ற தலை மயிரும் கூர்மையான விடங்களைப் பொழியும் செருக்குடைய கண்களுடனும்,

பிலவக பங்க வாள் முகம் ( pilavaga panga vAN muga) : face dazzling like the fearsome monkey; குரங்கு போன்ற பங்கமுடைய ஒளிவீசும் முகமுடனும், பிலவகம் = வளைந்த உடல் கொண்டது, ஒப்புதலாக, குரங்கு; அல்லது, பிலம் (=பொந்து) + அகம் = பிலவகம் = குகையின் உட்புறம் போன்ற முகம்;

முடுகிய நெடுகிய திரிசூலம் பந்த பாசமும் மருவிய கர தலம் ( mudugiya nedugiya thirisoolam pantha pAsamum maruviya kara thala) : hands holding the speediest and long trident and a rope that is ready to bind; வலிமிகுந்த நீண்ட திரிசூலத்தையும், கட்டுகின்ற பாசக்கயிற்றையுந் தாங்கிய கரதலங்களுடனும்,

மிஞ்சி நீடிய கரு முகில் உருவொடு பண்பி(ல்)லாத ஒரு பகடு அது முதுகினில் யம ராஜன் ( minji neediya karu mugil uruvodu paNbilAthoru pagadathu muthuginil yamarAjan ) : With complexion like the dark and dense cloud, this God of Death, Yama, mounts the ugly buffalo; மிக உயர்ந்து கருமேகம்போற் பயங்கரத்தைத் தருவதாகிய சரீரத்துடனும் (இத்தகைய கோர வடிவத்துடன்) குணமில்லாத எருமை வாகனத்தில் மேல் கூற்றுவன்

அஞ்சவே வரும் அவதரம் அதில் ஒரு ( anjavE varum avatharam athil oru ) : I am terrorized as Yama comes to me , அடியேன் அஞ்சுமாறு வருகின்ற சமயத்தில், அவதரம் = சமயம், சந்தர்ப்பம்,

தஞ்சம் ஆகிய வழிவழி அருள் பெறும் அன்பினால் உனது அடி புகழ் அடிமை (thanjam Agiya vazhi vazhi aruL peRum anbinAl unathu adi pugazh adimai) : I have sought Your blessings for several generations and surrender to You now, extolling your feet, I remain a willing slave to your love; வழிவழியாக அருள்பெறும் அன்பினால் தேவரீரது திருவடிகளைப் புகழும் அடிமையாகிய நாயேன்;

என் எதிரே நீ அண்ட கோளகை வெடிபட இடிபட (en ethirE nee aNda kOLagai vedi pada idi pada ) : Appear before me exploding through the zenith of the cosmic globe and shattering it

எண் திசா முகம் மடமட நடம் இடும் (eN thisAmuga mada mada nadamidum ) : so that the eight directions fall apart breaking into pieces,

அந்த மோகர மயிலினில் இயலுடன் வரவேணும் (antha mOgara mayilinil iyaludan vara vENum ) : as Your ferocious Peacock dances; You must come compassionately mounted on that Peacock! இயல் = சிறந்த, தகுந்த, அன்பான, அழகான; இயலுடன் வரவேணும் = இறைவனுக்கே இயல்பான கருணையுடன் வரவேணும். மோகரம் = பேராரவாரம். உக்கிரம்; Vehemence, rage;

மஞ்சு போல் வளர் அளகமும் ( manju pOl vaLar aLagamum) : Her hair billowing like the dark cloud;

இளகிய ரஞ்சித அம்ருத வசனமும் நிலவு என வந்த தூய வெண் முறுவலும் (iLagiya ranjitha amrutha vasanamum nilavu ena vantha thUya veN muRuvalum) : her voice mellifluous like the sweet nectar and her pure white teeth shining like the moonlight; மனதை இளகச் செய்யும்படியான மென்மையும், இனிமையானதும், அமிர்தத்தை ஒத்ததுமாகிய இன்மொழியும், சந்திரனது ஒளியைப்போல் விளங்குவதும், பரிசுத்தமானதும் வெண்ணிறத்தோடு அழகு செய்வதுமாகிய இளநகையும்,

இரு குழை அளவோடும் மன்றல் வாரிச நயனமும் ( iru kuzhai aLavOdum manRal vArija nayanamum ) : her fragrant lotus-like eyes extending up to both the ears; குழை (kuzai) : ears; மன்றல் (manRal) : fragrant; இரண்டு தோடுகள் வரை நீண்டுள்ளதும், வாசனைத் தங்கிய தாமரை மலரை ஒத்ததுமாகிய கண்களும்

அழகிய குன்ற வாழ்நர் தம் மடமகள் தட முலை மந்தர அசல மிசை துயில் அழகிய மணவாளா (azhagiya kunRa vANartham mada magaL thada mulai mantharAsala misai thuyil azhagiya maNavALA ) : she is VaLLi, the petite hunter lass living in the beautiful hill with voluminous breasts like the manthara mountain on which You, the handsome consort, snooze!

செம் சொல் மா திசை வட திசை குட திசை விஞ்சு கீழ் திசை சகலமும் இகல் செய்து (senjol mA thisai vada thisai kuda thisai vinju keezh thisai sagalamum igal seythu) : You (as Ukkira PANdiyan) conquered the southern direction renowned for the great Tamil language, the north, the west, and the great eastern direction; சங்க காலப் பாண்டியனான சோமசுந்தர பாண்டியனின் (சிவனின் அவதாரமாகச் சொல்லப்படுபவர்) மகனான உக்கிர பாண்டியன் (முருகனின் அவதாரமாகச் சொல்லப்படுபவர்), கனத்த செந்தமிழ் மொழியால் சிறப்புறும் தென்திசை, வடதிசை, மேல்திசை, பெருமைமிகுந்த கீழ்த்திசை முதலிய எல்லாத் திசைகளிலும் போர் செய்து வெற்றி அடைந்து, குட திசை = மேற்கு; விஞ்சு = மேலான, கீழ்த் திசை = கிழக்கு;

திங்கள் வேணியர் பல தளி தொழுது (thingaL vENiyar pala thaLi thozhuthu) : worshipped several temples of Lord SivA who dons the crescent moon on His tresses, சந்திரசேகரராகிய சிவபெருமானது ஆலயங்கள் தோறும் வழிபாடு செய்து,

உயர் மக மேரு செண்டு மோதினர் அரசருள் அதிபதி ( uyar maga meru ceNdu mOthinar arasaruL athipathi ) : and flung the weapon "cheNdu" on the high crest of Mount Meru, Oh, the King of kings! உயர்ந்த மகா மேருகிரியைச் செண்டாலெறிந்த அரசர்க்கு அரசரே! (உக்கிர பாண்டியனுக்கு வேல் வளை செண்டு கொடுத்த படலம் - 12; மேருவை செண்டால் அடித்த படலம் - 15)

தொண்டர் ஆதியும் வழிவழி நெறி பெறு ( thoNdarAthiyum vazhi vazhi neRi peRu ) : You bless all the devotees who worship You traditionally from across generations! தொண்டர் முதலானோர் வழிவழி அடிமையாக இருந்து முத்தி பெற அருளிய, வழிவழி நெறிபெறு = வழி வழியாக (பிறவிதோறும், பரம்பரை பரம்பரையாக) என்றும் அழியா இன்ப நெறியைப் பெறும்படியான

செந்தில் மா நகரில் இனிது உறை அமரர்கள் பெருமாளே(senthil mA nagar inithu uRai amarargaL perumALE. ) : You are seated with happiness at Your abode in ThiruchchendhUr as the Lord of the Celestials, Oh Great One!
