Paraphrase

வஞ்சம் கொண்டும் திட ராவணனும் ( vanjam koNdum thida rAvaNanum) : With wickedness in mind, the strong Ravana

பந்து என் திண் பரி தேர் கரி ( pandhu en thiN pari thEr kari) : with the help of an army of strong horses, elephants and chariots that dash like balls; பந்துபோல் வேகமாகச் செல்லுகின்ற வலிமையுடைய குதிரை, தேர், யானை, பரி ( pari ) : Horse; கரி (kari ) : elephant;

மஞ்சின் பண்பும் சரியாம் என வெகு சேனை வந்து (manjin paNbum sariyAm ena vegu sEnai vandhu) : and troops of soldiers ordered neatly like layers of clouds; மேகம்போல் திரண்டு வருகின்ற, மிகுந்த சேனைகளுடன் போர்க்களத்திற்கு வந்து, மஞ்சின் பண்பும் சரியாம் என = மேகம்போல் திரண்டு வருகின்ற, மஞ்சு : மேகம்;

அம்பும் பொங்கியதாக எதிர்ந்தும் தன் சம்பிரதாயமும் வம்பும் தும்பும் பல பேசியும் (ambum pongiyadhAga edhirndhum than sambiradhAyamum vambum thumbum pala pEsiyum ) : Even when he (Ravana) faced clusters of the enemy's arrows in the battlefield, he kept boasting vainly about his valour, and ridiculing his opponent.

எதிரே கை மிஞ்ச என்றும் சண்டை செய் போது (edhirE kai minji endRum sandai sey pOdhu) : When he fiercely fought with firm thoughts of victory with the army of the opponent / remarking that the enemies far exceeded them in numbers எதிரியை விட தன் கை மேலோங்க வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணத்துடன் சண்டை செய்யும் போது/ எதிரிகள் சேனைகள் மிகுதி என்று கூறி சண்டை செய்யும் போது

குரங்கும் துஞ்சும் கனல் போல வெகுண்டு குன்றும் கரடு ஆர் மரம் அதும் வீசி (kurangum thunjum kanal pOla vegundum kunRum karadu Ar maram adhum veesi) : the enraged monkeys looking like burning embers displayed their anger by throwing boulders from the mountains and branches from rough trees, குரங்குகளும் எதிர்த்து கனன்று எரியம் நெருப்புப்போல் சினந்து, கல்குண்டுகளையும் சிறு மலைகளையும் கரடு முரடான மரங்களையும் பிடுங்கி வீசி, துஞ்சும் = உறங்கும்; ;

மிண்டும் துங்கங்களினாலே தகர்ந்து (mindum thunggangaLinAle thagarndhu ) : With the rocks hewn from the hills, they crushed நெருங்கிய அந்த மலைகளினாலே நொறுக்கிய துங்கம் (thungam) : mountain, elevation; மிண்டும் = நெருங்கிய;

அங்கம் கம் கரம் மார்போடு மின் சந்தும் சிந்த நிசாசரர் வகை சேரவும் (angam kam karam mArbodu min sandhum sindha nisAcharar vagaisEravum) : the bodies, heads, arms, chests and other lustrous parts of the enemy. உடம்பு தலை கை இவைகளுடன் ஒளி விடுகின்ற உடற் கீல்களையும் சிதற வைத்து இரவில் உலாவுகின்ற அசுரர்களுடைய இனங்கள் முழுவதும் சேர்ந்து; நிசாசரர் = இரவில் உலாவுபவர்கள், அசுரர்கள்; நிசாசரர் வகை சேர்ந்து கம் = தலை; சந்து = (உடமிலிருக்கும்) கீல்கள், joints;

சண்டன் தென் திசை நாடி விழுந்து (chaNdan then dhisai nAdi vizhundhu ) : driving the entire clan of the demons to the South, the direction ruled by YamA (the God of Death). யமனுடைய தென் திசையை நாடி விழவும், சண்டன் = யமன்;

அங்கும் சென்று எம தூதர்கள் உந்து உந்து உந்து என்றிடவே (angkum chendRu ema dhUthargaL undhu undhu endRidavE ) : and followed the messengers of YamA, ordering the demons to yield way,

தசை நிணம் மூளை உண்டும் கண்டும் சில கூளிகள் (dhasai niNa mULai uNdum kaNdum sila kULigaL ) : evil spirits were intoxicated by the sight and taste of the demons' flesh, fat and brains, கூளிகள் (kULigaL) : பேய்கள்;

டிண் டிண் டெண் என்று குதி போடவும் (diN diN enRu kudhi pOdavum) : jumped and danced in exultation to the meter of "diN diN".

உயர்ந்த அம்பும் கொண்டு வெல் மாதவன் மருகோனே (uyarndha ambum koNdu vel mAdhavan marugOnE) : you, the nephew of Rama (Vishnu) who triumphed in the battle (as described above) using lofty arrows!

தஞ்சம் தஞ்சம் சிறியேன் மதி கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சம் துரையே அருள் தந்து என்றும் இன்பம் தரு வீடு அது தருவாயே (thanjam thanjam siriyEn madhi konjam konjam dhuraiyE aruL thandhu endrum inbam tharu veedadhu tharuvAyE) : I seek Your refuge, my Lord, my intellect is very limited; Oh Lord, kindly bless me with the blissful liberation that is everlasting!

சங்கம் கஞ்சம் கயல் சூழ் தடம் எங்கெங்கும் பொங்க (sangam kanjam kayal sUzh thadam engengum ponga ) : Conch shells, lotus and kayal fish are abundant in the surrounding tanks which are overflowing with water everywhere; தடம் எங்கு எங்கும் பொங்க = குளங்கள் பல இடங்களிலும் விளங்குகின்ற,

மகா புனிதம் தங்கும் செந்திலில் வாழ் உயர் பெருமாளே.(mahA punitham thangum sendhilil vAzhvuyar perumALE.) : in this sacred abode of Thiruchendhur, Oh Great One!
