Paraphrase

Many religious chauvinists are vain and hedonistic cheats who do not direct their gaze inward and seek salvation. The Saint laments that he seeks the company of these fanatics, fritters away valuable time without learning anything worthy, and becomes weary. He yearns for His grace to elevate his consciousness to sublime levels and grip His feet for guidance.

கிறி மொழி கிருதரை பொறி வழி செறிஞரை (kiRi mozhi kirutharai poRi vazhi cheRinjarai) : Those arrogant people who are compulsive liars, those who heed to their five sensory organs; கிறி (kiRi ) : lie; கிருதர் (kiruthar ) : arrogant; பொறி வழி (poRi vazhi ) : the path of sensory organs, going the way directed by the five senses; பொய் மொழி பேசும் செருக்கு உள்ளவர்களை, ஐம்பொறிகளின் வழியே செல்லுபவர்களை,

கெடு பிறப்பு அற விழிக்கிற பார்வை கெடு மட குருடரை திருடரை (kedu piRappu aRa vizhikkiRa pArvai kedu mada kurudarai thirudarai) : those blind people without the inner eyes of intellect, who simply gaze stealthily, without any thought of redemption; கெடு பிறப்பு அற (kedu piRappu aRa) : to get rid of this sinful birth; கெடுபிறப்பற விழிக்கிற பார்வைக் கெடு மட குருடரை –கெடுதலான இப்பிறப்பு நன்மைக்கு ஆகாதபடி திருட்டு விழி விழித்து, கெடுதியும் அறிவின்மையும் உடைய குருடர்/ அறிவுக்கண் இல்லாதவர்.

சமய தர்க்கிகள் தமை செறிதல் உற்று அறிவு ஏதும் அறிதல் அற்று அயர்தல் உற்று அவிழ்தல் அற்று (samaya tharkkikaL thamaic cheRithal utRu aRivu Ethum aRithal atRu ayarthal utRu avizhthal atRu:) : I would approach religious fanatics (who would debate ceaselessly); and without learning anything to enhance my knowledge, I became exhausted, and without my rigid heart melting through devotion; சமய தர்க்கிகள்(samaya tharkigaL) : those who debate over religion; அவிழ்தல் ( avizhthal ) : softening of heart, உள்ளம் நெகிழ்தல்; செறிதல் உற்று ( seRital utru ) : seeking/approaching;

அருகல் உற்று அறவு(ம்) நெக்கு அழி கரு கடல் ஊடே அமிழ்தல் அற்று (arugal utRu aRavum nekku azhi karuk kadal UdE amizhthal atRu) : I have become blemished; instead of totally drowning in the sea of birth that destroys me, அருகல் (அருகுதல்) உற்று( arugal utru ) : become defective; அருகல் உற்று = குறைபாடு அடைந்து; அருகுதல் என்றால் சுருங்குதல், குறைதல் என்று பொருள்.

எழுதல் உற்று உணர் நலத்து உயர்தல் உற்று அடியிணைக்கு அணுகிட பெறுவேனோ (ezhuthal utRu uNar nalaththu uyarthal utRu adiyiNaikku aNukidap peRuvEnO) : will I be able to rise, come up in life and tread in the righteous path with a good feeling and attain Your hallowed feet? உணர்வு நலத்து உயர்தல் உற்று = நல்லுணர்வு பெறும் நலமான வழியில் மேம்பாடு அடைந்து;

பொறி உடை செழியன் வெப்பு ஒழிதர பறி தலை பொறி இல சமணர் அத்தனை பேரும் பொடி பட (poRi udai chezhiyan veppu ozhitharap paRi thalaip poRi ilac chamaNar aththanai pErum podi pada ) : To cure the high fever of the intelligent king PANdiyan (with a hunch-back) and to destroy the entire foolish clan of ChamaNas, who had the custom of plucking the hair of one another; பொறி உடை (poRi udai ) : intelligent; பொறி இல (poRi ila) : without intelligence; வெப்பு (veppu ) : fever;

சிவ மண பொடி பரப்பிய திரு புகலியில் கவுணிய புலவோனே (siva maNap podi parappiya thirup pukaliyil kavuNiyap pulavOnE) : You distributed the fragrant holy ash of SivA (in Madhurai) coming as Poet ThirugnAna Sambandhar in the lineage of kavuNiyars of Pukali (SeegAzhi)! கவுணிய புலவோனே (kavuNiyap pulavOnE) : The poet from the clan of gavuNiyas; சிவ மண பொடி(siva maNap podi) : holy ash;

தறி வளைத்து உற நகை பொறி எழ புரம் எரித்தவர் திரு புதல்வ (thaRi vaLaiththu uRa nakaip poRi ezhap puram eriththavar thirup puthalva) : He raised fiery sparks merely from His smile that destroyed Thiripuram completely; and You are the good son of that Lord SivA! நகை பொறி எழ (nagai poRi ezha ) : giving rise to a fiery spark with laughter; தறி வளைத்து உற = அழிவு உண்டாகும்படி;

நல் சுனை மேவும் தனி மண குவளை நித்தமும் மலர் தரு (nal sunai mEvum thani maNak kuvaLai niththamum malar tharu) : In the unique spring that yields fragrant blue lily blossoms every day,

செருத்தணியினில் சரவண பெருமாளே.(seruththaNiyinil saravaNap perumALE.) : at SeruththaNi (ThiruththaNigai) where you reside, Oh SaravaNA, the Great One! செரு = போர். சூராதி அவுணருடன் செய்த போரின் வேகந் தணிந்தபடியால் ‘செருத்தணி’யெனப் பேர் பெற்றது.
