சந்தான புஷ்பபரி மளகிண் கிணீ முகச்
சரணயுக ளமிர்தப்ரபா

சந்த்ரசே கரமூஷி காரூட வெகுமோக

சிந்தா மணிக்கலச கரகட கபோலத்ரி
யம்பக விநாயகன்முதற்

சிவனைவலம் வருமளவில் உலகடைய நொடியில்வரு
சித்ரக் கலாபமயிலாம்

மந்தா கிநிப்பிரப வதரங்க விதரங்க
வனசரோ தயகிர்த்திகா

வரபுத்ர ராஜீவ பரியங்க தந்திய
வராசலன் குலிசாயுதத்

திந்த்ராணி மங்கில்ய தந்து ரக்ஷாபரண
இகல்வேல் விநோதன் அருள்கூர்

இமையகிரி குமரிமகன் ஏறுநீ லக்ரீவ

Paraphrase

The first half of the poem describes Ganesha and says that in the time Ganesha took for circumambulating His parents, the peacock went round the entire universe. The second half describes Murugan and refers to the peacock as His vehicle.

சந்தான புஷ்ப பரிமள கிண்கிணீ முகச் சரண யுகள அமிர்த ப்ரபா ( santhaana pushpa parimaLa kiNkiNee muka charaNa yugaLamirtha prabaa) : His twin feet fragrant with the flowers of the sandal tree, tinkling with anklets and radiant as the nectar; சந்தான புஷ்பம் (santhana pushpam) : flower of the sandal tree, one of the five celestial tree; கிண்கிணீ முகச் சரண யுகள (kiNkiNI mukha charaNa yugaLa) : pair of feet adorned by tinkling anklets; சதங்கையை தன்னிடத்தில் கொண்ட இரண்டு திரு அடிகளை உடையவர், அமிர்த ப்ரபா (amirtha prabha) : effulgent as the pot of nectar;

சந்த்ர சேகர மூஷிக ஆருட வெகு மோக சத்ய ப்ரிய ஆலிங்கன (chandra sEkara mooshikaarooda vegumOha sathya priyaalingana) : wearing the crescent moon on His hair, mounting the mouse, and hugging passionately the truth, வெகு மோக சத்ய பிரிய ஆலிங்கன — மிகப் பிரியத்துடன் சத்ய நெறியையே தழுவிக் கொண்டிருப்பவரும்,

சிந்தாமணிக் கலச கர கட கபோல த்ரியம்பக விநாயகன் (chinthaamaNik kalasa kara kata kapOla thriyambaka vinaayakan) : magnanimous/charitable as the chintamani, His hands carrying the kalasa or pot (for performing abhishekam to His parents) and musth water flowing down His cheeks, the three-eyed Vinayaka,

முதல் சிவனை வலம் வரும் அளவில் உலகடைய நொடியில் வரு சித்ர கலாப மயிலாம் (mudhal sivanaivalam varum aLavil ulagadaiya nodiyil varu chithra kalaapa mayilaam) : once went round Lord Shiva, within which interval of time, this beautifully plumed peacock went round the entire universe!

Who is this peacock? It is Lord Murugan's vehicle! The next lines describe Murugan.

மந்தாகிநி பிரபவ தரங்க விதரங்க வன சரோதய கிர்த்திகா வரபுத்ர (mandhaa kinip pirabava tharanga vitharanga vana sarOdhaya kirththikaa vara puthra ) : He took birth in Ganges; He can blast our worries; He was born in the Saravana lake (or forest?); the distinguished son of Krittika maidens! தரங்கம் (tharangam) : waves, mental worries; விதரங்கம் (vitharangam) : break, blast; தரங்க விதரங்க (tharanga vitharanga) : one who blasts our mental worries, leaving the mind like a sea devoid of waves; நிச்சலமாய் அலை ஓய்ந்த கடலைப் போல் கவலையற்ற மனத்தை அருள்பவர்; வன சரோதய (vana sarOthaya) : One who appeared as a hunter at the Vallimalai mountain or one who appeared (was born) at the Saravana ('Sara' in Sanskrit means dried grass ('dharba' grass). So 'Sara vana' refers to a forest of dharba grass)

ராஜீவ பரியங்க தந்தி அ வர அசலன் குலிசாயுதத்து இந்த்ராணி மங்கில்ய தந்து ரக்ஷாபரண இகல் வேல் விநோதன் (raajeeva pariyanga thandhiya varaachalan kulisaayudhaththu indhraaNi maangilya thandhu rakshaabaraNa igalvEl vinOdhan) : He has lotus as His bed; He resides in Thiruchengou that has the appearance of a serpent; He looks handsome with a combat-worthy 'vel' that saved the knot in the mangalya thread of Indrani, the wife of Vajrayudha-wielding Indra; ராஜீவம் (rajeevam) : lotus; பரியங்கம் (pariyankam) : bed; ராஜிவ பரியங்க — தாமரை மலரைத் தனது கட்டிலாகக் கொண்டவரும், குலிசம் (kulisam) : thunder bolt as the weapon of indra and skanda; தந்தி (thanthi) : more common meaning of the word is elephant; here, it means snake; அசலன் (achalan) : mountain; தந்தி அ வர அசலன்(thanthi a vara achalan) : that gracious mountain in the form of a serpent; Thiruchengodu; விநோதன் (vinOthan) : handsome;

அருள்கூர் இமையகிரி குமரி மகன் ஏறு நீலக்ரீவ ரத்னக் கலாப மயிலே.( aruLkoor imaiyagiri kumarimagan Eru neelagreeva rathnak kalaapa mayilE) : It is the blue-necked and the emerald and radiant plumes of the peacock that the son of the merciful Himavan's daughter mounts; க்ரீவம் (greevam) : neck.
