முன்னொருகாலத்தில் அழியாத்தன்மை பெற தேவரும் அசுரரும் மந்தரமலையை மத்தாக்கி வாசுகி எனும் பாம்பினைக் கயிறாக்கிப் பாற்கடலைக் கடைந்தனர். அப்போது வலிபொறாத நாகத்தின் வாயினின்றும் கொடியவிடம் கொப்பளித்து பெருகி, கிரகங்கள் சுழலும் இந்த மண்டலத்தை எரிக்கலாயிற்று. அந்த ஆலகாலத்தை சிவன் அமுதுசெய்து கண்டத்தில் நிறுத்தி நீலகண்டன் ஆனார். அந்த அரவினைப் பிடித்து, தன் அலகினால் குத்தி, இரு கால்களால் மிதித்துத் தன் சிறகுகளை விரித்து எடுத்து உதறும் வல்லமை பெற்றது முருகனது வாகனமாகிய மயில்!

பணாமுடி எடுத்து உதறும் ஒரு சண்டப் பரசண்ட மயிலாம் ( paNaa mudi eduth udharumoru chaNdap parachaNda mayilaam) : Murugan's peacock is so powerful that it can shake the hoods of Vasuki.
