தேடுதற் கரிதான நவமணி அழுத்தியிடு
செங்கரனை யமுதம் வாய்கொள்

செயமளித் தருளெனக் கெனஉவப் பொடுவந்து
சேவடி பிடித்ததெனவும்

நீடுமைக் கடல்சுட்ட திற்கடைந் தெழுகடலும்
நீயெமைக் காக்க எனவும்

நிபிடமுடி நெடியகிரி எந்தமைக் காவெனவும்
நிகழ்கின்ற துங்கநெடுவேல்

ஆடுமைக் கணபணக் கதிர்முடிப் புடையெயிற்
றடலெரிக் கொடிய உக்ர

அழல்விழிப் படுகொலைக் கடையகட் செவியினுக்
கரசினைத் தனியெடுத்தே

சாடுமைப் புயலெனப் பசுநிறச் சிகரியிற்
றாய்திமித் துடனடிக்குஞ்

சமரமயில் வாகனன் அமரர்தொழு நாயகன்
சண்முகன் தன்கை வேலே.

Paraphrase

At the time of Sura Samhara, the seas went dry from the heat of the vel, the clouds thus formed covered the sun in the sky, and the world turned dark. It is natural for the clouds to disappear when the sun, or for that matter, the Lord's vel with the radiance of the sun, appears. But reminiscing the Sura Samhara, the clouds, however, want to experience the rare feat of being able to cover the sun. But the seas pray that they never get dried up like they were once at the time of Soora Samhara, and the mountains want the assurance that they should never get destroyed like the Krauncha mountain.

தேடுதற்கு அரிது ஆன நவமணி அழுத்தி இடு செம் கரனை (thEdudhaRku aridhaana navamaNi azhuththiyidu sengkaranai) : The sun that is resplendent with red rays as if it has hidden within itself the nine rare precious stones;

அமுதம் வாய் கொள் செயம் அளித்து அருள் எனக்கு என உவப்பொடு வந்து சேவடி பிடித்தது எனவும் ( amudham vaaykoL jayam aLiththu aruL enakku ena uvappodu vandhu sEvadi pidiththadhu enavum) : the clouds happily approach and hold the Vel's auspicious feet, praying that they successfully cover the sun and become victorious; அமுதம் (amudham) : clouds carrying rain water; வாய் கொள் (vaay koL) : to swallow; செங்கரன் (sengaran) : one with red hands(rays); sun;

நீடு மை கடல் சுட்டதிற்கு அடைந்து எழு கடலும் நீ எமைக் காக்க எனவும் ( needu maik kadal suttadhiR kadaindhu ezhu kadalum nee emai kaakka enavum) : for having dried up the long and dark sea (during Soora ), the seven seas sought the refuge and pleaded for protection; நீடு மை கடல் ( needu maik kadal) : நீண்ட கரிய கடல்;

நிபிட முடி நெடியகிரி எந்தமைக் கா எனவும் நிகழ்கின்ற துங்க நெடு வேல் ( nibida mudi nediya giri endhamaik kaa enavum nigazhgindra thunga nedu vEl) : the many-peaked, tall mountains prayed for protection: such was the splendour of the pristine vel; நிபிட முடி ( nibida mudi) : நெருங்கிய சிகரங்களை உடைய;

And whose was this vel? It belonged to Lord Murugan whose vehicle was the peacock, and the peacock's valor in attacking the mighty Adisesha is described below:

ஆடு மை கணபண கதிர் முடி (aadu mai gaNa paNa kadhir mudi) : group of dancing dark hoods with radiant crowns,

புடை எயிற்று அடல் எரி ( pudai eyitru adal eri) : teeth that are close to the mouth, with powerful and strong fire leaping from them, புடை ( pudai) : வாயின் பக்கங்களில்; எயிறு (eyiRu) : teeth;

கொடிய உக்ர அழல் விழி (kodiya ugra azhaal vizhi) : cruel and fierce eyes of fire

படு கொலை கடைய கட்செவியினுக்கு அரசினை தனி எடுத்தே ( padu kolai kadaiya katseviyinukku arasinai thani eduththE) : picking up Adisesha who can commit murder savagely, கட்செவி (katchevi) : snake; கட்செவியினுக்கு அரசு (kat seviyinukku arasu) : king of snakes; Adisesha;

சாடும் மைப்புயல் எனப் பசுநிற சிகரியில் தாய் திமித்துடன் நடிக்கும் சமர மயில் வாகனன் (chaadu mai puyal ena pasu niRa sigariyil thaay dhimiththudan nadikkum samara mayil vaahanan) : He rides the battle-proficient peacock which, like the swiftly blowing storm of dark clouds, hits the verdant mountain peaks with rhythmic steps, தாய் திமித்துடன் ( thaay thimiththudan) : தாவி தாளத்துடன் அடியிட்டு;

அமரர் தொழும் நாயகன் சண்முகன் தன்கை வேலே.( amarar thozhu naayakan shaNmukan than kai vElE) : He is the master worshipped by the celestials; He is the six-faced Shanmukha who holds this vel.
