Paraphrase

கருகி அறிவு அகல உயிர் விட்டு உக்கிக் கிளைஞர் கதறி அழ (karugi aRivu agala uyir vittu ukkik kiLainjar kathaRi azha) : The body appears scorched; the intellect disappears, the life departs, relatives lament and wail aloud; உடல் கருகித் தீய்ந்த்து போல ஆகி, அறிவும் கெட்டுப்போய், உயிர் உடலை விட்டுப் பிரிந்து போன பின்னர் சுற்றத்தார் கதறி அழவும், உட்குதல் = அச்சப்படுதல்; கிளைஞர் (kiLainjar) : relatives;

விரவு பறை முட்டக் கொட்டி இட (viravu paRai muttak kotti ida ) : all the drums that arrive (at the site of death) make a loud noise,

கனக மணி சிவிகையில் அமர்த்திக் கட்டையினில் இடை போடா (kanaga maNi sivikaiyil amarththik kattaiyinil idai pOdA) : the body is seated on a palanquin shining with gold and gems and then laid between the logs;

கர மலர் கொடு அரிசியினை இட்டுச் (kara malar kodu arisiyinai ittuc ) : with their flower-like palms, the relatives offer the last morsel of rice at the mouth of the corpse;

சித்ர மிகு கலையை உரி செய்து (chithra migu kalaiyai uri seythu) : then the nice cloth covering the body is stripped;

மறைகள் பற்றப் பற்று கனல் கண கண என எரிய உடல் சுட்டு (maRaikaL patRap patRu kanal kaNa kaNa ena eriya udal suttu) : the private or hidden parts of the body is lit and the flames rise brightly and body is burned; மறைகள் (maRaigaL) : the concealed parts;

கக்ஷியவர் வழியே போய் மருவு புனல் முழுகி மனை புக்குத் துக்கம் அறு (kakshiyavar vazhiyE pOy maruvu punal muzhuki manai pukku thukkam aRu) : the near and dear ones return along the same route, take bath thoroughly in water, reach their homes and get over their sorrows.

மனிதர் தமை உறவு நிலை சுட்டுச் சுட்டி உற மகிழ்வு செய்து அழுது பட வைத்து (manithar thamai uRavu nilai suttuc chutti uRa makizhvu seythu azhuthu pada vaiththu) : remembering such people by their relationship to me, I feel either elated or sorrowful; இப்படிப்பட்ட மனிதர்களை, இவர் இன்னார் என்று உறவு முறை கொண்டாடி அவரோடு மகிழ்வு கொண்டிருந்த காலத்தில் மகிழ்ந்தும், துன்பம் நேரிட்ட காலத்தில் அழுது கொண்டும் இருந்தோம்.

அத் துட்டன் மதன் மலராலே மயல் விளைய அரிவையர்கள் கைப்பட்டு எய்த்து மிக மனம் அழியும் அடிமையை நினைத்து (ath thuttan mathan malarAlE mayal viLaiya arivaiyarkaL kaippattu eyththu mika manam azhiyum adimaiyai ninaiththu) : provoked by the wicked God of Love (Manmathan) who shoots his flowery arrows, I become passionate and get entangled in the hands of women, feeling weak, extremely depressed and lost; keeping this slave in Your mind, (அப்படி உறவின் முறை கருதி வாழ்ந்து கொண்டு இருந்த காலத்தில்,) அந்தக் கொடியவனான மன்மதனுடைய மலர்க்கணைகளின் தாக்கத்தால், காம மயக்கத்துடன் பெண்களை நாடி இருந்து, உடல் வலிமையும், பொருள் நலமும் இழந்து மனம் மிக நொந்து அழிகின்ற உயிர்களின் மீது கருணை வைத்து,

சொர்க்க பதி வழியை இது வழி என உரைத்துப் பொன் கழல்கள் தருவாயே (sorga pathi vazhiyai ithu vazhi ena uraiththup pon kazhalkaL tharuvAyE) : kindly instruct me proclaiming that the path to heaven and eternal bliss is attaining Your hallowed feet, and grant me those feet!

பொருவு இல் மலை அரையன் அருள் பச்சைச் சித்ர மயில் (poruvu il malai araiyan aruL pacchaic chithra mayil ) : the daughter of the matchless king (HimavAn), ruling the Mount HimAlayAs, She looks like a beautiful green peacock, பொருவு இல் (poruvil) : matchless; நிகர் அற்றவன்; அரையன் (araiyan) : king;

புரம் எரிய இரணிய தனுக் கைப் பற்றி (puram eriya iraNiya thanuk kaip patRi) : She is the one who held the golden bow in Her hand to destroy Thiripuram; இரணிய தனு(iraNiya dhanu) : golden bow;

இயல் புதிய முடுகு அரிய தவம் உற்றுக் கச்சியினில் உற மேவும் புகழ் வனிதை தரு புதல்வ (iyal puthiya muduku ariya thavam utRuk kacchiyinil uRa mEvum pukazh vanithai tharu puthalva) : with ceaseless devotion and amazing vigour She undertook a rare penance in KAnchipuram where She is happily seated; and You are the son of that famous DEvi PArvathi!

பத்துக் கொத்து முடி புயம் இருபது அறவும் எய்த சக்ரக் கைக் கடவுள் (paththuk koththu mudi puyam irupathu aRavum eytha sakrak kaik kadavuL ) : The ten bunched heads and twenty shoulders of RAvaNan were severed when He wielded His arrow; He is the Lord holding a disc in His hand;

பொறி அரவின் மிசை துயிலு(ம்) சுத்தப் பச்சை முகில் மருகோனே (poRi aravin misai thuyilu(m) suththap pacchai mukil marukOnE) : He slumbers on the spotted serpent, AdhisEshan; He has a pure-green and dark-cloud complexion; and You are the nephew of that Lord VishNu! பொறி அரவு (poRi aravu) : dotted serpent (Adisesha); முகில் (mugil) : cloud;

அரிய மரகத மயிலில் உற்றுக் கத்து கடல் அது சுவற அசுரர் கிளை கெட்டுக் கட்டை அற (ariya marakatha mayilil utRuk kaththu kadal athu suvaRa asurar kiLai kettuk kattai aRa) : Mounting the unique peacock of emerald-green hue, You dried up the roaring sea, annihilated the entire clan of demons,

அமரர் பதி இனிய குடி வைத்தற்கு உற்ற மிகு இளையோனே (amarar pathi iniya kudi vaiththaRku utRa miku iLaiyOnE) : and enabled IndrA, the Lord of the celestials, to regain and happily settle in his kingdom, Oh mighty Youngster!

அருண மணி வெயில் பரவு பத்துத் திக்கும் மிகும் அழகு பொதி மதர் மகுட (aruNa maNi veyil paravu paththuth thikkum mikum azhaku pothi mathar makuda) : Your jewel crowns, filled with bright red gemstones that radiate light in all the ten directions, look gorgeous and rich, Oh Lord! செம்மணிகளின் ஒளியானது பத்துத் திசைகளிலும் வீசுகின்ற அழகு பொதிந்த மணிமுடியினை உடையவரே! மதர் (mathar) : prosperous, abundant; மதர் மகுட (mathar maguda) : luxurious crown;

தத்தித் தத்தி வளர் அணிய கயல் உகளும் வயல் அத்திப்பட்டில் உறை பெருமாளே.( thaththith thaththi vaLar aNiya kayal ukaLum vayal aththippattil uRai perumALE.) : In the fields of this town, flourishing kayal fish in rows keep on jumping up and up; You are seated here, in Aththippattu, Oh Great One! தாவித் தாவி, அணி அணியாக வளர்கின்ற கயல் மீன்கள் துள்ளிக் குதிக்கும் வயல்கள் உள்ள அத்திப்பட்டு என்னும் திருத்தலத்தில் வீற்றிருக்கும் பெருமையில் மிக்கவரே! நெய்வேலி அனல்மின் உற்பத்தி நிலையப் பகுதிக்கு அருகில் உள்ள அத்திப்பட்டு/வில்லுடயவன்பட்டு ஆலயத்தில் முருகன் வில்லுடன் காணப்படுகிறார். உகள் (ugaL) : jump;
