Paraphrase

Saint Arunagirinathar regrets the lot of people who waste and belittle their scholarly knowledge of Tamil in flattering and bootlicking the deceitful patrons for monetary gains.

அறிவிலாதவர் ஈனர் பேச்சு இரண்டு பகரு நாவினர் (aRivilAthavar eenar pEchchiraNdu pagaru nAvinar) : Unintelligent people, debased and double-tongued ones;

லோபர் தீக் குணங்கள் அதிக பாதகர் (lObar theekkuNangaL athiga pAthagar ) : miserly, vicious ones, bent upon committing heinous crimes;

மாதர் மேற் கலன்கள் புனை ஆதர் (mAtharmER kalankaL punaiyAthar ) : stupid people deriving pleasure by bejewelling harlots; கலன்கள் (kalangaL) : ornaments; ஆதர் (Athar) : அறிவிலிகள் ; stupid;

அசடர் பூமிசை வீணராய்ப் பிறந்து திரியு மானுடர் (asadar bhUmisai veeNarAyp piRanthu thiriyu mAnudar) : dimwits, men wasting their time in this world, roaming around aimlessly;

பேதைமார்க்கு இரங்கி அழியு மாலினர் (pEthaimArkku irangi azhiyum mAlinar) : people destroying themselves by obsessively coveting women,

நீதி நூற் பயன்கள் தெரியாத நெறியிலாதவர் ( neethi nool payangaL theriyAtha neRiyilAthavar) : people ignorant of the value of moral treatises and deviating from the righteous path;

சூதினாற் கவர்ந்து பொருள் செய் பூரியர் ( sUthinAR kavarnthu poruL sey pUriyar) : the decadents who grab the riches of others through gambling,

மோகமாய்ப் ப்ரபஞ்ச நிலையில் வீழ்தரு மூடர்பால் ( mOgamAy prapanja nilaiyil veezh tharu mUdarpAR ) : and the imbeciles hankering after worldly pleasures – these are the people at whose doors,

சிறந்த தமிழ் கூறி ( siRantha thamizh kURi) : I sang great songs in Tamil.

நினைவு பாழ்பட வாடி நோக்கு இழந்து ( ninaivu pAzhpada vAdi nOkku izhanthu) : My thinking was corrupted, and I languished with a diminishing eyesight.

வறுமையாகிய தீயின் மேற் கிடந்து நெளியு நீள் புழு வாயினேற்கு (vaRumai yAkiya theeyinmER kidanthu neLiyu neeLpuzhu vAyinERku) : I looked like a long worm twitching after falling on the fire of poverty.

காதலர் தோள்கள் வேட்டு இணங்கி (kAthalar thOLkaL vEttu iNangi) : were locked in loving embrace with the shoulders of their lovers, வேட்கை = விரும்புதல்; to desire;

நகை கொடு ஏழிசை பாடி மேற் பொலிந்து களிகூர (nagaikodu Ezhisai pAdimER polinthu kaLikUra ) : amidst laughter and musical merriment in the seven notes;

நடுவிலாத குரோதமாய்த் தடிந்த தகுவர் மாதர் (naduvilAtha kurOthamAy thadintha thaguvar mAthar) : the women of the unjust and angry demons who were in the path of destruction, நடுவிலாத(naduvilAtha) : unjust; தகுவர் (thaguvar) : the demons or asuras;

மா இரு கூறதாய்த் தடிந்த வடிவேலா ( mAviru kURathAy thadintha vadivElA) : and that SUran was split into two by Your sharp spear, Oh Lord! தடிந்த (thadintha) : hack, hew;

மருவு காள முகீல்கள் கூட்டெழுந்து (maruvu kALa mukeelkaL kUttu ezhunthu ) : Dense and dark clouds gather together to climb up, முகீ(கி)ல் (mugeel/mugil ) : cloud;

மதி உலாவிய மாடமேற் படிந்த (mathiyu lAviya mAdamER padintha) : and graze on the tall moonlit terraces of this town,
