Know The Raga Bhairavi : Janyam of 20th mela Natabhairavi

Arohanam: S G2 R2 G2 M1 P D2 N2 S     Avarohanam: S N2 D1 P M1 G2 R2 S (bhashanga raga). The notes used are chathusruthi rishabham, sadharana gandharam, shuddha madhyamam, chathusruthi dhaivatham, shuddha dhaivatham and kaishika nishadham. Note the use of both dhaivathams, chathusruthi (D2) in ārohaṇa and shuddha (D1) in avarohaṇa.

Paraphrase

நிணமொடு குருதி நரம்பு மாறிய தசை (niNamodu kuruthi narambu mARiya thasai) : The muscles, combined with flesh, blood and nerves, மாறிய (mARiya) : mixed with, கலந்துள்ள;

குடல் மிடையும் எலும்பு தோல் இவை (kudal midaiyum elumbu thOlivai ) : the intestines, closely-packed bones and the skin; மிடை(midai) : to be close, crowded;

நிரை நிரை செறியும் உடம்பு (nirai nirai seRiyum udambu) : are all arranged closely within this body. நிரை (nirai) : positioned in a line, juxtaposed;

நோய் படு முது காயம் (nOypadu muthukAyam ) : This old body is susceptible to be infected with diseases.

நிலை நிலை உருவ மலங்கள் ஆவது (nilai nilai uruva malangaL Avathu) : At every stage of growth in this life, this body takes different shapes and gets contaminated with various malams or blemishes;

நவ தொளை உடைய குரம்பையாம் இதில் நிகழ் தரு பொழுதில் (nava thoLai yudaiya kurambai yAmithil nigazh tharu pozhuthil ) : While life is still sustained in this little cottage of the body with nine portals, நிகழ் தரு பொழுதில் (nigazh tharu pozhuthil ) : while there is still life, உயிர் இருக்கும் பொழுதே ;

முயன்று மாதவம் உய ஓரும் உணர்வு இலி ( muyanRu mAdhavam u(y)ya Orum uNarvili) : I do not have the inclination to attempt great penance for my salvation.

செப முதல் ஒன்று தான் இலி (jeba muthal onRu thAn ili) : I do not have the virtues like meditation.

நிறை இலி முறை இலி அன்பு தான் இலி (niRai ili muRai ili anbu thAn ili ) : I do not have any virility, righteousness or the capability even to love. நிறை இலி(niRai ili) : ஆண்மைக் குணம் இல்லாதவன்;

உயர்வு இலி எனினும் என் நெஞ்சு தான் நினைவு அழியா முன் (uyarvu ili yeninum en nenju thAn ninaivu azhiyA mun) : I do not have any greatness. However, before my mind ceases to think,

ஒரு திரு மரகத துங்க மா மிசை அறுமுகம் ஒளி விட வந்து (oru thiru maragatha thunga mAmisai aRumugam oLivida vanthu) : (You must graciously come to me) mounted on the unique, emerald-green, immaculate horse-like peacock, with all Your six hallowed faces glowing with grace,

நான் மறை உபநிடம் அதனை விளங்க நீ அருள் புரிவாயே (nAnmaRai upanidam athanai viLanga neeyaruL purivAyE ) : to enlighten me on the significance of the four scriptures and Upanishads.

புணரியில் விரவி எழுந்த ஞாயிறு விலகிய (puNariyil viravi yezhuntha gnAyiRu vilagiya) : The Sun who dips into and rises from the ocean strayed away (being scared) புணரி(puNari) : sea; விரவி எழுந்த(viravi ezhuntha) : merges and rises; ஞாயிறு (gnAyiRu) : sun;

புரிசை இலங்கை வாழ் பதி ( purisai ilangai vAzh pathi ) : from LankA with its tall fortress walls. The King of LankA, Ravana, புரிசை (purisai) : fortress, மதில்கள்;

பொலம் மணி மகுட சிரங்கள் தாம் ஒரு பதும் மாறி (pola maNi makuda sirangaL thAm oru pathum mARi) : lost all his ten heads, with golden crowns embedded with gems; பொலம் மணி (polam maNi) : பொன் இரத்தனங்களால் ஆன;

புவி இடை உருள முனிந்து கூர் கணை (puviyidai yuruLa muninthu kUrkaNai ) : and the heads were made to roll on the earth by an angry and sharp arrow;

உறு சிலை வளைய வலிந்து நாடிய புயல் (yuRusilai vaLaiya valinthu nAdiya puyal) : from Rama with the complexion of a dark cloud and who sought to go after RAvaNA with a fully-bent bow and determination.

அதி விறல் அரி விண்டு மால் திரு மருகோனே (athi viRalari viNdu mAl thiru marugOnE) : He is Hari, the bravest, with names like Vishnu and ThirumAl. You are His great nephew!

அணி தரு கயிலை நடுங்க (aNitharu kayilai nadunga) : The beautiful mount KailAsh trembled;

ஓர் எழு குல கிரி அடைய இடிந்து தூள் எழ (Or ezhu kula giri adaiya idinthu thUL ezha) : all the seven celebrated mountains were shattered, raising a dust storm;

அலை எறி உததி குழம்ப வேல் விடு முருகோனே (alaiyeRi yuthathi kuzhampa vElvidu murukOnE) : and the fierce wavy ocean was in tumult when You threw Your Spear, Oh MurugA! உததி (uthathi) : sea/ocean;

அமலை முன் அரிய தவம் செய் (amalai mun ariya thavam chey) : Once DEvi PArvathi, the Purest form of Mother, performed a unique penance in

பாடல வள நகர் மருவி அமர்ந்த தேசிக (pAdala vaLa nagar maruvi amarntha thEsika ) : the great PAdalanagar (ThiruppAthirippuliyUr) where You reside with relish, Oh Master!

அறுமுக குறமகள் அன்ப (aRumuka kuRa magaL anba) : Oh Lord with six hallowed faces and the beloved of VaLLi, the damsel of KuRavas,

மா தவர் பெருமாளே. (mAthavar perumALE.) : You are worshipped by distinguished sages, Oh Great One!
