இகல வரு திரை பெருகிய சலநிதி (igala varu thirai perugiya jalanidhi) : Numerous waves rising to different heights from the sea, இகல (igala) : strong, hostile; இகல வரு திரை (igala varu thirai) : waves competing with each other, ஒன்றோடொன்று மாறுபட்டு எழுகின்ற அலைகள் ;

நிலவும் உலகினில் இகமுறு பிறவியின் (nilavum ulaginil igamuRu piRaviyin) : surround the world in which this birth has taken place. இகம் (igam) : the life in this world, this life, the present birth, இம்மை ;

இனிமை பெற வரும் இடருறும் இருவினை அது தீர (inimai peRa varum idaruRum iru vinai adhu theera) : To experience happiness and to get rid of the good and bad deeds along with sufferings,

இசையும் உனதிரு பத மலர்தனை மனமிசைய நினைகிலி (isaiyum unadhiru padhamalar thanai isaiya ninaigili ) : I should contemplate on Your two lotus feet with utmost devotion in the heart, but I don't think of it;

இதமுற உனது அருள் இவர உருகிலி (idhamuRa unadhu aruL ivara urugili) : to get peace, I do not melt seeking Your grace; இதம் உற (itham uRa) : to get happiness, இன்பம் பெருக; அருள் இவர (aruL ivara) : to see divine grace, அருள் கைகூடிக் கிடைக்க;

அயர்கிலி தொழுகிலி (ayargili thozhugili) : I am never devoted to You to the point of exhaustion; nor do I worship You;

உமைபாகர் மகிழு மகவென அறைகிலி (umai bAgar magizhu magavena aRaigili) : I never praise Your name addressing You as the child cuddled by SivA whose left side is occupied by UmAdEvi;

நிறைகிலி மடமை குறைகிலி (niRaigili madamai kuRaigili) : I am never content; my ignorance is unlimited;

மதி உணர்வு அறிகிலி (mathi uNarvu aRigili) : I am not wise nor do I have clarity of thought;

வசனமற உறு மவுனமொடு உறைகிலி (vachana maRa uRu mavunamodu uRaigili) : I have never practised silence which is the culmination of speechlessness;

மடமாதர் மயமது அடரிட இடருறும் அடியனும் (mada mAdhar mayama dhadarida idaruRum adiyanum) : I am haunted by young women's seductive beauty; மயம் = அழகு, பொருள், மகிழ்ச்சி; அடர்த்தல் = நெருக்குதல், தாக்குதல்;

இனிமை தரும் உனது அடியவர் உடனுற ( inimai tharum unadh adiyavar udan uRa) : (Despite this), Will it be possible for me to attain the blissful nearness of Your devotees?

மருவ அருள் தரு கிருபையின் மலிகுவது ஒருநாளே (maruva aruL tharu kirubaiyin maliguvadh oru nALE) : Will there be a day when I shall mingle with them (Your devotees), due to Your grace?

சிகர தனகிரி குறமகள் இனிதுற (sikara thana giri kuRamagaL inidhuRa) : To enthrall VaLLi, the damsel of the KuRavas, who has mountainous bosoms,

சிலத நலமுறு சிலபல வசன அமுது இறைய அறைபயில் அறுமுக (siladha nalamuRu sila pala vachana amuthu iRaiya aRai payil aRumuga ) : You befriended her and chose several soothing words, which were sprinkled in nectar, to address her lovingly, Oh Lord with six faces! ; சிலதன் (silathan) : friend; சிலதன் = ஏவல் செய்வோன், தோழன்; முருகன் வள்ளிக்கு வேளைக்காரன், வேடிச்சி காவலன். ஆதலின் சிலதன் எனப்பட்டார்.

நிறை தரும் அருள் நீத (niRai tharum aruL Neetha) : You are the embodiment of abundant grace and justice!

சிரண புரண விதரண (siraNa puraNa vitharaNa) : You are majestic, consummate and compassionate! சிரண(சீர்+அண) (siraNa (seer+aNa)) : pride, excellence, பெருமை பொருந்திய; விதரண(vitharaNa) : compassionate, தயாள குணத்தனே! ; பு(பூ)ரண (pooraNa) : complete;

விசிரவண சரணு சரவண பவகுக (visiravaNa saraNu saravaNabava guha) : You are extremely knowledgeable! You are the ultimate refuge for all! You emerged from the great pond of reeds (Saravanam), Oh GuhA! விசிரவண (visiravaNa) : Sanskrit, from vi-sru, “to hear distinctly” — One who hears well, one who has many questions, நிரம்ப கேள்வி உடையவனே. This has thus been interpreted as 'extremely knowledgeable. சரணு (சரண் + உ) அடைக்கலம் புகுதற்கு உரிய (உ) இறைவனே!

சயனொளி திரவ (jayan oLi thirava) : You are the essence of effulgent SivA and You are supreme! சயன் (sayan) : bright, Shiva; அருள் ஒளியின் சாரமே / (சிவனுடைய) ஒளி பாய்ந்தவனே;

பர அதி சிர மறை முடிவுறு பொருள் நீத (para athi sira maRai mudivuRu poruL Neetha ) : You are the greatest; You are the ultimate substance of justice in the scriptures! பர = பரம்பொருளே! அதி சிரம் = மிகுந்த மேன்மை; glory, greatness;

அகர உகரதி (akara ukaradhi) : You represent the first letter "a" by being the foremost; You represent "U" for UmAdEvi, the symbol of Sivasakthi; அகரம் போன்று முதன்மைப் பொருளாக விளங்குபவரே! உகர சிவசக்தியாக விளங்கும் நல்லறிவே!
வாயைத் திறந்த உடனே அ என்பது இயல்பாக எழுகின்றது. ஆகவே அகரம் ஓசை உருவங்களாய் மருவி எல்லா எழுத்துக்களுக்கும் உறுதி புரிந்து, எல்லா எழுத்துக்களிலும் கலந்து இயக்கி, தானும் தனித்து இயங்கும். இறைவனும் சரம் அசரம் என்னும் உயிர்களையும் உலகப் பொருள்களையும் இயக்கி, தானும் தனித்து இயங்குவான். இதே போல் உகரம் புத்தியைச் செலுத்தும்; மகரம் மனத்தைச் செலுத்தும்.

மகரதி சிகரதி (makaradhi sikaradhi) : You burn down the evils of arrogance and possessiveness; You are the Pure Wisdom representing SivA. மகர தீ(magara thee) : One who burns down the arrogance, ஆணவ மலத்தை தகிப்பவனே ; சிகர தீ (sikara thee) : சிவமாகிய அறிவே ;

யகர அருளதி தெருளதி (yakara aruLadhi theruLadhi) : You reside inside the soul of JeevAthma; Your compassion is abundant; You are omniscient! யகரமாகிய உயிர்களுக்கு அருள் புரிந்து உயிர்களின் அறிவில் தெளிவை தருபவனே; தெருள் - அறிவின் தெளிவு; தெருளுதல் - உணர்வு உறுதல், தெளிதல், விளங்குதல்.

வலவல அரண முரணுறும் அசுரர்கள் கெட அயில் விடுவோனே (vala vala araNa muraNuRum asurargaL keda ayil viduvOnE) : You wielded the spear to destroy all the demons who were hostile and well entrenched in their mighty fortresses! மிக்க வலிமை பொருந்திய அரண்களை உடையவரும், மாறுபாடு கொண்டவரும் ஆகிய அசுரர்கள் அழியும்படி வேலாயுதத்தை விடுத்து அருளியவரே! அரணம் : fort;

அழகும் இலகிய புலமையு மகிமையும் வளமும் உறை (azhagum ilagiya pulamaiyu mahimaiyum vaLamum uRai) : There is plenty of natural beauty, a lot of knowledge, fame and prosperity in

திரு மயிலையில் அநுதினம் அமரும் (thiru mayilaiyil anudhinam amarum ) : Mylapore where You reside every day!

அரகர சிவசுத அடியவர் பெருமாளே. (hara hara siva sutha adiyavar perumALE.) : You are the son of SivA around whom there is always the vibrant chanting of Hara Hara! You belong to Your devotees, Oh Great One!
