Paraphrase

சுருதி வெகுமுக புராண கோடிகள் (suruthi vegu muga purANa kOdigaL) : The VEdAs, millions of diverse mythologies (purANams), வேதமும், பலவிதப்பட்ட கோடிக் கணக்கான புராணங்களும்,

சரியை கிரியை மக யோக மோகிகள் (sariyai kiriyai maga yOga mOgikaL) : people who follow sariyai form of worship, kiriyai methods, people who zealously practise the yOgA method, சரியை மார்க்கத்தில் இருந்து கோவில்களுக்குத் தொண்டு செய்பவர்களும், கிரியை மார்க்கத்தில் நடந்து நியமமாய் மலர் தூவித் தொழுபவர்களும், மகாயோக மார்க்கத்தில் ஆசை பூண்டு யோக நிஷ்டையில் இருப்பவர்களும்,

துரித பர சமய பேத வாதிகள் என்றும் ஓடி (thuritha para samaya pEtha vAthikaL enRum Odi) : people who endlessly argue citing contradictory and confusing tenets of other religions - all these run about forever to inquire, கலக்கத்தைத் தரும் பர சமய பேதங்களை மேற்கொண்டு வாதிப்பவர்களும் ஓடி ஓடி ஆராய்ந்து , துரிதம் (thuritham) : விரைவு, வேகம்; இங்கு, கலக்கம். ;

தொடர உணர அரிதாய தூரிய பொருளை அணுகி (thodara uNara arithAya thUriya poruLai aNugi) : comprehend and grasp It; however, It is beyond their reach. It is that Pure and Supreme principle which I wish to approach

அநுபோகமானவை தொலைய இனிய ஒரு ஸ்வாமியாகிய நின் ப்ரகாசம் கருதி உருகி (anupOkamAnavai tholaiya iniya oru SvAmiyAgiya nin prakAsam karuthi urugi) : to destroy my worldly experiences and desires. You are such an exhilirating Lord that I want to meditate, with a melting heart, on your dazzling form of effulgence.

அவிரோதியாய் அருள் பெருகு பரம சுக மா மகா உததி (avirOthiyAy aruL peruku parama suka mA magA uthathi) : I wish to gain the true spiritual knowledge with which I could see all lives as non-distinct parts of myself; in that blissful and great ocean of kindness, எல்லா உயிரும் எனது உயிரின் பகுதிகளே என்னும் பேதமற்ற மனம் உடையவனாக, அருள் நிறைந்த மேலான இன்பப் பெரிய கடலில்; அவிரோதியாய் (avirOthiyAy) : எல்லா உயிரும் எனது உயிர் என்னும் இதய பாவனை உடையவனாய்;

கருணை அடியரொடு கூடி ஆடி மகிழ்ந்து (karuNai adiyarodu kUdi Adi magizhnthu) : I wish to happily mingle with Your compassionate devotees.

நீபக் கனக மணி வயிர நூபுர (neebak kanaga maNi vayira nUpura) : Adorned with kadappa flowers, golden anklets embedded with gems and diamonds,

ஆரிய கிரண சரண அபிராம கோமள கமல உகளம் மறவாது பாட நினைந்திடாதோ (Ariya kiraNa saraNa apirAma kOmaLa kamala ukaLam maRavAthu pAda ninainthidAthO) : radiating bright rays, and offering refuge are Your gorgeous and youthful lotus feet; will You not kindly bless me with the ability to remember and sing the glory of those hallowed feet?

மருது நெறு நெறு என மோதி வேரோடு (maruthu neRu neRu ena mOthi vErOdu) : He rammed into the two marutha trees (with the stone-barrel tied to His waist), uprooting and felling them with a thunderous noise; மருத மரங்களை நெறுநெறு என்று ஒலிக்குமாறு வேருடன் முறியும்படி (இடுப்பில் கட்டிய உரலோடு -- உரலில் கயிற்றினால் கட்டுப்பட்ட வயிற்றை உடையவராதலால் தாமோதரன் என்ற பெயர் பெற்றவன் கண்ணன்) மோதியும்,

கருதும் அலகை முலை கோதி (karuthum alagai mulai kOthi) : He killed the fiend (PUthanai) who plotted to murder Him (with poisonous milk) by sucking her breast and life away; தன்னை கொல்லும் கருத்துடன் வந்த அரக்கி பூதனையுடைய முலையுடன் அவள் உயிரையும் சேர்த்துக் குடித்தான் கண்ணன்; அலகை = பேய்;

வீதியில் மதுகையொடு தறுகண் ஆனை வீரிட வென்று (veethiyil mathukaiyodu thaRukaN Anai veerida venRu) : when the ferocious and arrogant elephant (KuvalayApeetam) came charging in the street, He fought with and defeated the treacherous elephant which screamed in pain; தெருவில் வலிமையுடன் வஞ்சகமாகக் கொல்ல வந்த (குவலயா பீடம் என்னும்) யானை அலறிக் கூச்சலிட அதை வென்றும்,; மதுகை(mathukai) : strength, வலிமை; தறுகண் (thaRukaN) : valorous, cruel, கொடுமை;

தாளால் வலிய சகடு இடறி மாயமாய் மடி படிய நடை பழகி (thALAl valiya sakadu idaRi mAyamAy madi padiya nadai pazhagi) : with His foot He forcefully kicked the demon (ChakatAsuran) who came disguised as a cart-wheel and killed him craftily; after accomplishing such miracles, He casually crawled and walked about like a child, பாதத்தால் வலிமை வாய்ந்த வண்டிச் சக்கரத்தை (சகடாசுரனை) எற்றி உதைத்து, தந்திரமாய் அவன் இறக்கும்படிச் செய்தும், மீண்டும் சாதாரணக் குழந்தை போலத் தவழ்ந்தும், நடந்தும்,

(Ayar pAdiyil vaLarum mukil maruga) : growing up in the shepherds' quarters; He is of the hue of dark cloud; He is Krishna, and You are the nephew of that Lord VishNu!

வேல் விநோத சிகண்டி வீரா (vEl vinOtha sikaNdi veerA) : You hold the spear in Your hand, Oh wonderful Lord! You mount the peacock valiantly!

விருதர் நிருதர் குல சேனை சாடிய விஜய (viruthar niruthar kula sEnai sAdiya vijaya) : You conquered the valorous armies of the demons and killed them triumphantly! விருதர் (viruthar) : வீரர்;

கட தட கபோல வாரண விபுதை புளக தன பார பூஷண (kada thada kapOla vAraNa viputhai puLaka thana pAra pUshaNa) : You wear on Your chest the precious jewels of the enthralled bosom of DEvayAnai, who was reared by the celestial and the wide-jawed elephant (AirAvadham)! விசாலமான தாடையை உடைய யானை (ஐராவதம்) வளர்த்த தேவயானையின் புளகம் கொண்ட மார்பகங்களை உன் மார்பில் அணிகளாகத் தரித்துள்ளவனே; விபுதை (viputhai) : தேவி;

அம் கிராத விமலை நகில் அருண வாகு பூதர (am kirAtha vimalai nakil aruNa vAku pUthara) : You have mountain-like reddish shoulders that embrace the bosom of VaLLi, the blemishless and beautiful damsel of the hunters! அழகிய, வேடர் குலத்துத் தூயவளான வள்ளியின் மார்பினை அணைத்துக் கொள்ளும் சிவந்த தோள் மலையை உடையவனே, நகில் (nagil) : breasts, கொங்கை;

விபுத கடக (viputha kadaka) : You are the Commander-in-Chief of the armies of the celestials! தேவர்கள் சேனைக்கு நாயகனே, , விபுதன் (viputhan) : தேவன்; கடகம் (kadagam) : shield, army;

கிரி மேரு பூதர விகட சமர (giri mEru pUthara vikada samara) : You found fault with Mount MEru, the mountain of mountains, and fought with it, Oh Lord! மலைகளுள் மேருமலையுடன் மாறுபட்டு போர் செய்தவனே, விகடம்(vigadam) : hindrance, diversity; பூதரம் (bootharam) : mountain;

(satha kOdi vAnavar thambirAnE.) : You are the Lord of millions of celestials, Oh Great One!

The four methods of worship

  1. sariyai : Sariyai form of worship can be called Bhakti Yoga and uses idolatry. This is deemed best suited for Kali Yuga. Worship through service in temples such as doing penance, washing the floor, lighting the lamps, maintaining the flower garden, plucking the flowers for offering, making of garlands, singing of hymns, decorating the deities etc. This is known as 'dhAdha mArgam - sAlOkam'.

  2. kiriyai : In Kiriyai, deemed suitable for Dvapara Yuga, the devotee makes use of Fire and Water, two out of five Pancha boothams in rites and rituals. This is called 'puthra mArgam - sameepam'.

  3. yOgam : In Yogam form of worship considered ideal for Thretha Yuga, the devotee pursues Meditation and Yoga to attain divinity. The Sadhaka or practitioner controls senses, inhaling and holding the oxygen and letting it through the six centres of 'kuNdalini chakrA', experiencing the flow of nectar in the 'Lunar zone' between the eyebrows and letting it seep throughout the body and meditating on the full effulgence. This is 'sakha mArgam - sArUbam'.

  4. gnAnam : Here, the devotee worships through intellect alone, and seeks the True Knowledge. He/she sees the God in every living beings through Pure Love. This is 'san mArgam - sAyujyam'
