Meaning

Muruga's peacock attacks and eats away the serpents, which represent ego and desire. The Rooster on Murugan's staff therefore showers its love on the peacock.

பங்கமாகிய விட புயங்க மா படமது (Bangamaagiya vida buyanga maa padamathu) : The hoods of the venomous serpents which did several atrocities, பங்கமாகிய விட(ம்) = கொடுமைகளைச்செய்யும் விஷத்தை உடைய; புயங்கம் : பாம்பு (வடசொல் - புஜங்கம்)

பறித்து சிவத்தருந்தி (paRiththu sivaththarunthi) : is poked and devoured angrily by; பறித்துச் சிவத்து அருந்தி = கொத்தி சினத்துடன் புசித்து

பகிரண்ட முழுதும் பறந்து நிர்த்தங்கள் புரி பச்சைக் கலாப மயிலை (bagiraNda muzhuthum paRanthu nirththangaLpuri pachaik kalaaba mayilai) : the peacock with green plumes, which flew and danced around the entire universe.

துங்கமாய் அன்புற்று (thungamaay anbutru) : With pure love,

வன்புற்று அடர்ந்து வரும் துடரும் பிரேத பூத தொகுதிகள் பசாசுகள் நிசாசரர் அடங்கலும் துண்டப் படக் கொத்துமாம் (vanbutru adarnthu varu thudarum pirEtha bUthath thoguthigaL pasaasugaL nisaasarar adangalum thundap padak koththumaam ) : (the Rooster) would scatter into pieces the demons, crowds of devils and asuras that trail behind the peacock.

The following lines describe Murugan, who once incarnated as Thirugnanasambanthar, and who is the nephew of Vishnu, the slayer of the demon Hiranyakasipu.

மங்கை யாமளை குமரி கங்கை மாலினி கவுரி (mangai yaamaLai kumari gangai maalini gavuri) : She is the Maiden; the green-complexioned Shyamala;, She is the Spinster or Kumari; She is the manifestation of Ganga, She wears garlands, She has golden complexion;

வஞ்சி நான்முகி வராகி (vanji naanmuki varaagi) : She is slender as a creeper; She has four faces; She is Varahi, the feminine energy of Varaha, the boar avatar of the god Vishnu,

மலை அரையன் உதவு அமலை (malai araiyan uthavu amalai) : She is the impeccable daughter of Himavan அரையன் (araiyan) : king;,

திரு முலையில் ஒழுகு பால் மகிழ அமுதுண்ட பாலன். (thiru mulaiyil ozhugu paal magzizha amuthuNda baalan ) : He (Thirugnana Sambanthar) happily drank the milk that seeped from Her breasts;

செங்கணண் மதலையிடம் இங்குளான் என்னும் (sengaNan mathalaiyidam inguLaan ennum narasingamaay iraNiyanudal) : When pointed to at the pillar (by Prahlada), the red- eyed Vishnu, மதலை (mathalai) : A word in Tamil has several meanings. ‘mathalai’ normally means baby/child. But here it means ‘pillar’. செங்கணண் (senkaNan): Vishnu, the red lotus-like eyed;

நரசிங்கமாய் இரணியனுடல் சிந்த உகிரில் கொடு பிளந்த மால் மருமகன் (narasingamaay iraNiyan udal sintha ugiril kodu piLantha maal marumagan) : appeared as a half-human and half-lion Narasimha form, tore Hiranyasura’s body with his nails, making it drip with blood. Murugan is that Vishnu’s nephew.

சேவல் திருத் துவசமே (sEval thiruth thuvasamE) : It is the Rooster on His banner.
