Paraphrase

When we sleep, we are unaware of our surroundings. While we are awake, the events around us affect us emotionally. For the truly emancipated souls, being asleep or awake makes no difference. Their senses are under their control and their minds are unperturbed.

பகல் இரவினில் தடுமாறா பதிகுரு எனத் தெளிபோத ரகசியம் உரைத்து அநுபூதி ரத நிலை தனைத் தருவாயே (pagal iraviniR thadumARA pathiguru enath theLibOdha ragasiyam uraiththu anubUthi rathanilai thanai tharuvAyE) : (Oh Lord) teach me the great secret of not getting stuck in the thinking/awareness (day) and forgetting (night) state of mind, but realizing clearly that Muruga is the Pure Preceptor (Guru) so that I can attain the blissful ('Ananda') state.

இக பரம் அதற்கு இறையோனே (iga param adhaRkku iRaiyOnE) : You are the Lord of this world and the celestial world!

இயல் இசையின் முத்தமிழோனே (iyal isaiyin muththamizhOnE) : You are the master of the three aspects of Tamil (namely, literature, music and drama);

சகசிரகிரிப் பதிவேளே (sagasira giri padhivELE ) : You are the monarch of ThirusirAmalai (sennimalai) which is world-famous.

சரவணபவப் பெருமாளே.(saravaNa bavap perumALE.) : You are Saravanabhava, Oh Great One!

Additional Explanation

There are four states of consciousness: jagrat, svapna, susupti and turiya. When one is awake, one is neither dreaming nor asleep. When a person is asleep, there is neither dream nor wakefulness. When a person is dreaming, he is neither awake nor fast asleep. But the turiya state (trance) is an undercurrent in all the other states. This state is neither waking ('day') nor asleep ('night').

Consider a person who has a dream in his sleep. The next day, he recalls that he was awake and then fell asleep and had a dream in the middle of the night. There is an undercurrent of "I" throughout all these states. This witnessing consciousness is called sakshi chaitanya. In a deep, dreamless sleep, one is not aware of objects or about subject (oneself) and no feeling of identity with the body; yet the consciousness does not cease, which is why we remember that we had a peaceful sleep. The distinction between knower, known and the knowledge vanishes. The dreamless sleep shows us that the Self, dissociated from the 'I' feeling, is not finite. When one moves from waking state through dreaming state to deep sleep state, consciousness moves from being cluttered into something seamless and more refined. One should understand that in deep sleep, one is dead to the world, whereas in transcendental/turiya/samadhi state, one is not merely dead to the external world but also awake and immersed in Brahman.
