Ramayana in Thiruppugzh (2)

Read here the first part of the trilogy on Ramayana as described in Thiruppugazh.....

The next episodes that find mention in a few of the 503 Thiruppugazh songs taught by Guruji Shri A.S.Raghavan:

1. Rama and Sita, along with Lakshmana, live in the Panchavati hermitage where Surpanakha comes across them and is infatuated with the handsome brothers. Angered by their spurning her love, Surpanakha attacks Sita, and Lakshmana, obeying Rama's orders, chops off Surpanakha's nose. Surpanakha stomps into Ravana's court, and incites Ravana to force Sita to marry him.

   மூக்கறை மட்டைம காபல காரணி
   சூர்ப்பந கைப்படு மூளியு தாசனி
   மூர்க்க குலத்திவி பீஷணர் சோதரி முழுமோடி
   மூத்தவ ரக்கனி ராவண னோடியல்
   பேற்றிவி டக்கம லாலய சீதையை
   மோட்டன் வளைத்தொரு தேர்மிசை யேகொடு முகிலேபோய்
   மாக்கன சித்திர கோபுர நீள்படை
   வீட்டிலி ருத்திய நாளவன் வேரற
   மார்க்கமு டித்தவி லாளிகள் நாயகன் மருகோனே

   Notice that the poet refers to Surpanakha as the sister of the virtuous Vibhishana rather than the depraved Ravana. This refers to the events in the past lives of Surpanakha and Vibhishana, who were Chandrachuda and Sumukhi in their previous births.

2. In the song பாதிமதி (paathimathi), the saint sings: காதும் ஒரு விழி காகம் உற அருள் மாயன் அரி திரு மருகோனே . This refers to the story of Jayantha, Indra's son, who appears as the crow called Kakasura and pokes at the breasts of Sita when Rama is sleeping on her lap. Sita doesn't want to disturb Rama's sleep and remains quiet. RAmA wakes up and throws a blade of grass that follows the fleeing crow. Finding no other means of escape, the crow surrenders to RAmA. RAmA removes one pupil of the crow, letting it use the remaining one pupil for both the eyes.

3. Sita has been kidnapped by Ravana. Torn by grief, Rama and Lakshmana search for her and reach Kishkintha mountains. In the following lines from the song உரையுஞ் சென்றது, Sugriva asks Hanuman to meet Rama and find out his intentions. Hanuman learns that Rama is searching for Sita, and tells Him about the jewels that Sita airdropped when kidnaped by Ravana. அரி மைந்தன் புகழ் மாருதி என்றுள
   கவியின் சங்கம் இராகவ புங்கவன்
   அறிவுங் கண்டு அருள்வாயென அன்பொடு தர வேறுன்
   
   அருளும் கண்ட தராபதி வன்புறு
   விஜயம் கொண்டு எழு போது புலம்பிய
   அகமும் பைந்தொடி சீதை மறைந்திட வழிதோறும்
   மருவும் குண்டலம் ஆழி சிலம்புகள் கடகம் தண்டை பொன் நூபுர மஞ்சரி
   மணியின் பந்து எறிவாய் இது பந்து என முதலான
   மலையும் சங்கிலி போல மருங்கு விண்
   முழுதுங் கண்ட நராயணன் அன்புறு மருகன்
   

4. Rama promises to assist Sugriva in killing Vali. To convince Sugriva of His invincibility over Vali, He aims a single arrow that pierces through seven trees (மராமரம், an incident portrayed in the lines appearing in the song தோழமை கொண்டு below:

   ஏழு மரங்களும் வன்குரங்கு எனும் வாலியும்
   அம்பரமும் பரம்பரை ராவணனும் சதுரங்க லங்கையும்
   அடைவே முன் ஈடழியும்படி
   சந்த்ரனும் சிவசூரியனும் சுரரும் பதம் பெற
   ராம சரம் தொடு புங்கவன் திரு மருகோனே
