Valli's marriage to Murugan is referred to as kaLavu form of marriage (gandharva marriage). In the case of kaḷavu, usually, a man and a woman fall in love at the very first sight. Sometimes, this love can be one-sided. In such a case, the man would like to force the girl and her parents to accept him and give the girl in marriage to him. This appears to be popular during the Sangam period and several poems describe மடல் ஏறுதல்(madal Eruthal ) by the lover, which is an ultimate act of desperation. Literally, it means “riding a palmyra stem”. Using a palmyra stem, the man makes a horse shaped object that has bells on its neck, wears an erukkam flower garland, smears his body with ash and carries a picture of his object of love. He sits on this 'horse' in tattered clothes and his friends carry him. Along the way, the lovesick man shouts insulting words at the woman and her family.

According to Kandha Puranam, Murugan drew the descriptive picture of VaLLi and went alone to Vallimalai. There, He chose a junction of four streets and stood staring at the picture day in and day out, oblivious of other peoples' comments and jeers. Ultimately, Valli's people were so moved by Murugan's devotion that they decided to formally give Valli in marriage to Murugan.
