Paraphrase

The first half of the poem praises Lord Shiva by reciting all his namas and prays for a place in His kingdom. The second half describes the battle field in which Soorapadman is vanquished.

கரிபுராரி காமாரி (karipurAri kAmAri) : One who destroyed the elephant hide; One who burnt down kama (lust) or Manmathan; According to Varaha Purana, Shiva visits the Forest as a young naked mendicant, with the enchantress Mohini as his wife. While the sages fall for Mohini, the women wildly chase Shiva. When the sages regain their senses, they perform a black magic sacrifice, which produces an elephant-demon called Gajasura, which attacks Shiva, who slays him and wears his hide. கரிபுராரி (karipurAri) : கரிபுர அரி, புரம் - சரீரம் — யானையின் உடலை அழித்தவர்; தாருகவனத்து முனிவர்கள் அபிசார ஹோமம் செய்து அனுப்பிய யானையை உரித்துச் சிவபெருமான் போர்த்தி கொண்டார்.

திரிபுராரி தீயாடி (thiripurAri theeyAdi) : Destroyer of Thiripuram; One who dances amidst the fire on the cremation ground;

கயிலையாளி காபாலி (kayilai yALi kApAli) : Ruler of Mount KailAsh; Holder of the skull (of BrahmA);

கழை யோனி (kazhai yOni) : emergent from the womb of a bamboo tree;

கர உதாசன ஆசாரி (kara vudhAsana AsAri) : a Great Teacher, holding fire in one hand; உ(ஹு)தாசனம் (u(hu)dhAsanam) : fire;

பரசு பாணி பானாளி (parasu pANi pAnALi) : holder of parasu (pickaxe); favorer of midnight; பான் — நடுஇரவு; பான் ஆளி = நள்ளிருளை உகந்தவரும்;

கணமொடு ஆடி ( kaNamodu Adi) : one who dances in the company of BhUthAs (devils);

காயோகி சிவயோகி (kAyOgi sivayOgi) : a Yogi who protects all the worlds; a Yogi following Saivite tradition; கா யோகி : யோகத்தை உடலாகக் கொண்டவர், யோக காயம்; காக்கும் யோகி; (அல்லது (காயம்) விண் ஆகிய பஞ்ச பூதங்களிலும் கலந்த யோகி; அல்லது காய்கின்ற/அழிக்கின்ற யோகி;

பரம யோகி மாயோகி ( parama yOgi mA yOgi) : Supreme Yogi and the greatest Yogi;

பரி அரா ஜடாசூடி (pariya rA jatA sUdi) : one who adorns His tresses with a huge serpent; பரி அரா (pari araa) : big serpent;

பகரொணாத மாஞானி பசுவேறி (pagaro NAdha mAnyAni pasuvERi) : an indescribable wizard; He mounts the bull, Nandi;

பரதம் ஆடி கானாடி (baratha mAdikAnAdi) : He is an expert dancer of Bharatha NAtiyam; one who dances in the forests; -பாவம்; -ராகம்; -தாளம் — இந்த மூன்றுடன் கூடிய பரத நாட்டியம் புரியும் சிவபெருமான்; சர்வ சங்கார காலத்தில் மகாமயானமாகிய காட்டில் தன்னந்தனியில் நடனம் புரியும் இறைவன்;

பர வயோதிக அதீத (para vayOdhika atheetha) : on who transcends all and is beyond aging; மூப்பைக் கடந்தவர்;

பரம ஞான வூர் பூத அருளாயோ (parama nyAna Ur pUtha aruLAyO) : and He is Lord SivA; Will You not let me enter His Kingdom of Supreme Knowledge? பூத (புகுத) (pootha (pugutha)) : to enter;

சுருதி ஆடி தாதா (surudhi yAdi dhAthA) : BrahmA, who studies all scriptures, வேதங்களை சதா ஓதும் பிரமன், தாதா = தந்தை, தாத்தா, பெரியோன், பிரமன்;

வி வெருவி யோட (vi veruvi Oda) : ran away with extreme fear; வி: மிக; வெருவி: அஞ்சி;

மூதேவி துரக (mUdhEvi thuraga) : the woman of ill-omen (MUdhEvi) departed; துரக = விலக, அகல;

கோப மீதோடி வடமேரு சுழல (kOba meethOdi vadamEru suzhala) : the enraged Mount MEru (KailAsh) in the North spun on its axis;

வேலை தீமூள (vElai theemULa) : the sea caught fire;

அழுது அளாவி வாய்பாறி சுரதினோடு சூர் மாள (azhudha LAvi vAypARi suradhi nOdu sUrmALa) : SUran was so frightened that he cried loudly until his jaws tore open, and he was eventually killed, சுர(த்)தினோடு (surath(th)inOdu) : loudly; சுரத்தினோடு-என்ற சொல் சுரதினோடு என வந்தது. சுரத்தோடு ஓசை செய்து வாய்கிழியும்படி சூரபன்மன் அழுது மாண்டான்.

உலகேழும் திகிரி மாதிர ஆவார திகிரி சாய (ulagEzhum thigiri mAdhira AvAra thigiri sAya) : all the seven worlds and SUran's abode, ChakravALagiri, which was a huge sphere obscuring all the directions, fell; வட்டமாகிய திசைகளை மறைக்கின்ற அண்டவெளியின் புற எல்லையாக இருக்கும் சக்ரவாளகிரி சாயவும், திகிரி மாதிர ஆவார திகிரி (thigiri mAdhira AvAra thigiri) : the mountain (Chakravala) that obscures the circular directions; திகிரி (thigiri) : circular, chariot, mountain; மாதிரம் (mathiram) : directions; ஆவாரம் (AvAram) : to obscure/obstruct the view;

வேதாள திரளினோடு பாறோடு கழுகாட (vEdhALa thiraLi nOdu pAROdu kazhugAda) : devils along with vultures and eagles danced in the battlefield; வேதாள திரள் (vEdhALa thiraL) : பேய் கூட்டம்; பாறு (pARu) : vultures;

செருவில் நாடு (seruvi nAdu ) : and You marched into that battlefield willingly!

வான் நீப (vAn neeba) : You wear the garland made of pure kadamba flowers! தூய/பரிஸுத்தமான கடப்ப மலர் மாலை அணிந்தவரே!

கருணை மேருவே (karuNai mEruvE) : For compassion You are comparable to Mount MEru (KailAsh)!

பார திருவிராலியூர் மேவு பெருமாளே.(pAra thiru virAli yUrmEvu perumALE.) : You have chosen for Your abode the famous and beautiful place, VirAlimalai, Oh Great One!
