மூல மந்திரம் ஓதல் இங்கு இலை (mUla mandhiram Odhal ingu ilai) : I do not chant Your Root Mantra (Saravanabhava); மந்திரங்களுக்கெல்லாம் முதன்மையான, நாம் காணும் பிரபஞ்சத்திற்கு கருப்பொருளாகிய, பஞ்சாக்ஷரத்தை அன்புடன் நான் ஓதவில்லை.

ஈவது இங்கு இலை நேயம் இங்கு இலை (eevadhu ingu ilai nEyam ingu ilai) : I do not give charity nor am I benevolent;

மோனம் இங்கு இலை ஞானம் இங்கு இலை (mOnam ingu ilai nyAnam ingu ilai) : I do not practice silent meditation and I do not have any divine knowledge; மௌன நிலையும் மெய்யறிவும் நான் பெறவில்லை;

Instead (இதற்கு மாறாக)

மடவார்கள் மோகம் உண்டு அதி தாகம் உண்டு (madavArgaL mOgam uNdu adhi dhAgam uNdu) : I have lust and infinite infatuation for women, பெண்கள் இடத்தே மையலாகி மயங்கும் மனம் உண்டு; காமத்தில் ஈடுபட இடைவிடா வேட்கை உண்டு; விடாய் = தாகம்;

அபசாரம் உண்டு அபராதம் உண்டு (apachAram uNdu aparAdham uNdu) : (because of this) I commit several sins because of which I have to bear severe punishment;

இடு மூகன் என்ற ஒரு பேரும் உண்டு (idu mUkan endroru pErum uNdu) : I have also earned bad reputation as dumb (for not reciting God's namas; (தேவ நாமங்களைச் சொல்லாமையால்) ஊமை என்று எனக்கு இட்ட ஒரு பேரும் உண்டு;

அருள் பயிலாத கோலமும் குண ஈன துன்பர்கள் வார்மையும் பலவாகி (aruL payilAdha kOlamum guNa eena thunbargaL vArmaiyum palavAgi) : bereft of Your grace, and with the increasing bad influence of evil people; திருவருள் பெறும் நெறியில் பழகாத வடிவமும், நற்குணமில்லாத கீழ் மக்களுடைய கூட்டுறவும், வார்மை = அண்மை, ஒழுக்கம், கூட்டுறவு;

கூடு கொண்டு உழல்வேனை (kUdu koNdu uzhalvEnai) : and rambling aimlessly with this soul/life trapped in a cage, மீண்டும் மீண்டும் உடம்பை எடுத்து (பிறவிக் கடலில் வீழ்ந்து) தடுமாறுகின்ற அடியேனை,

அன்போடு ஞான நெஞ்சினர் பால் இணங்கிடு கூர்மை தந்து (anbodu nyAna nenjinar pAl iNangidu kUrmai thandhu ) : In order that I am intelligent and sharp to seek the company of wise and compassionate people, மெய்யறிவு நிரம்பிய உள்ளத்தையுடைய பெரியோர்களுடன் கூடிப் பழகுவதற்குரிய அறிவின் நுட்பத்தைத் தந்து

இனி ஆள வந்து அருள் புரிவாயே ( ini ALa vandhu aruL purivAyE ) : Kindly rule my life with Your grace.

The following lines refer to the incidents that is said to have taken place in the 7th century and is narrated in the Peria Puranam. This was the time when Jains (ChamaNas/samaNas) wielded tremendous power in the South. King Koon Pandian (aka Arikesari Nedumaran, Nedumaran Pandiyan) who had converted to Jainism was suffering from a condition that made his body burn like fire. The Jains tried to cure his condition by stroking the body with peacock feathers, sprinkling water from their kamandlus and chanting mantras which only aggravated the king's pain. To determine whose religion was greatest, contests were organized where they threw into fire/river palm leaves containing verses and see if the manuscripts could stand the test of fire and water.

பீலி வெந்து உயர் ஆலி வெந்து அசோகு வெந்து (peeli venthuyarAli vendhava sOgu venthu ) : When ChamaNas tried to cure PANdiyan who was sick), their peacock feather was burnt, their sacred water in the kamaNdalu (kettle-shaped jar) boiled and the asoka tree leaves (used to pacify the patient) were also burnt; and (கூன்பாண்டியனது கொடிய வெப்பு நோயை நீக்கும் பொருட்டு சமணர்கள் மந்திரத்துடன் அவன் உடம்பைத் தடவிய) மயிற் பீலியானது வெந்து நீறாகவும், கமண்டலத்திலிருந்து தெளித்த நீரும் ஆவியாகவும், (அவர்கள் ஏந்தியுள்ள) அந்த அசோகக் கொத்துகள் வேகவும்; பீலி: மயிற்பீலி; ஆலி: (கமண்டலத்து) நீர்; அசோகு: அசோக மரத்துத் தளிர்;

சமண் மூகர் நெஞ்சிடை பீதி கொண்டிட (amaN mUgar nenjidai beethi kondida) : the ChamaNas got scared and were left dumbfounded, (சிவமந்திரஞ் சொல்லாத) ஊமைகளாகிய சமணர்கள் உள்ளம் பயத்தால் கலங்குமாறும்,

வாது கொண்டு அருள் எழுத ஏடு பேணி அங்கு எதிர் ஆறு சென்றிட (vAdhu koNdaruL ezhudhEdu pENi angu edhir ARu sendrida ) : when ThirugnAna Sambandhar led the debate, he placed a palm leaf with words of benediction on the Vaigai River which floated to the shore against the current; சிவசமயமே மெய்ச் சமயம் என்று வாதஞ்செய்து, அருள்மயமான தேவாரப் பாடல்கள் எழுதப்பட்ட திரு ஏடுகள் அந்த வைகையாற்றின் நீரை எதிர்த்து செல்லவும்; பேணி: பேணப்பட்டு, போற்றப்பட்டு;

மாறனும் பிணி தீர வஞ்சகர் பீறு வெம் கழு ஏற (mARanum piNi theera vanjagar peeRu veng kazhu ERa) : and the Pandya King also recovered fully from his illness (due to Sambandhar's holy ash); and the devious ChamaNas were impaled on stakes! பாண்டியன் சுரப் பிணியும் கூனும் நீங்கி உய்யவும், வஞ்சனையைச் செய்கின்ற சமணர்கள்,உடம்பைக் கிழிக்கின்ற கொடிய கழுவில் ஏறவும், திருஞானசம்பந்தராக வந்து வென்று சைவசமயத்தை நிலைநாட்டிய; பீறு = (உடலைக்) கிழிக்கின்ற;

வென்றிடு முருகோனே (vendridu murugOnE) : Such was Your victory Oh MurugA, (ThirugnAna SambandhAr is considered an incarnation of Muruga)!

(Alam uNdavar) : SivA, who ingested poison for the good of all,

சோதி அம் க(ண்)ணர் (jOthi am kaNar) : and who has the Sun, the Moon and the Fire God Agni as His three eyes,
The three eyes of Shiva ('trinetram') are the sun (arka), moon (indu), and fire (vahni). His third eye symbolizes fire, his right eye represents the sun and his left eye represents the moon. Though all the three represent light, each has its own special feature and quality. The sun is bright and brilliant, but its light does not burn objects, it illumines them. Conversely, the moon’s light has a cooling, peaceful quality. Fire has both the qualities of light and heat. It is with the fire which emanates from this third eye that Shiva destroys the evil of ignorance.

பாகம் ஒன்றிய வாலை அந்தரி ஆதி அந்தமுமான சங்கரி குமரேசா (bAgam ondriya vAlai anthari Adhi anthamum Ana sankari kumarEsA ) : and on whose left side resides Goddess Parvati; She occupies the Cosmic Sky, and She is the One who is the Origin and who is also the End, and that Sankari delivered You as Her Son, Oh KumarEsA. வாலை = என்றும் இளமைப் பருவமுடையவள், அந்தரி = ஆகாயத்தில் உள்ளவள் (அண்டத்தை ஆள்பவள்);

(AraNam payil nyAna pungava ) : The VEdAs (scriptures) worship You as the Wisest Master;

சேவல் அம் கொடி ஆன பைங்கர (sEval am kodi Ana painkara) : You hold in Your divine hand the rooster as Your staff!

(Avinan kudi vAzhvu koNdaruL perumALE.) : You have Your abode at ThiruvAvinankudi, Oh Great One!
