Paraphrase

When one surrenders oneself to the Lord, praying to Him with tears of ecstasy, the body which is composed of the five elements, the precious life which pervades it, the mind and the other karanas (antahkaranas), and even the sense of 'I-' (ego) get lost. At that moment, all the arguments of the various religious schools of thought become meaningless. The poet beseeches, "Grant me, the ignorant one, the knowledge of that Reality which is beyond both confirmation and negation. Lord, please bless me so!"

புகரில் சேவல (pugaril sEvala) : You hold the unblemished staff of the Rooster! குற்றமற்ற சேவற்கொடியை உடையவனே, புகர் (pugar) : fault, blemish;

தந்துர சங்க்ரம நிருதர் கோப (thandhura sangrama nirudhar kOpa) : You show Your rage at the unethical asuras (demons)! Some scholars interpret 'thanthura' as irregular teeth, but it doesn't qualify to evoke anger in Murugan! Similarly, it is possible to interpret சங்க்ரம as சங்க்ராம, which means war/battle, so தந்துர சங்க்ரம நிருதர் கோப (thandhura sangrama nirudhar kOpa) can mean displaying anger against warring asuras. ஒழுங்கின்மையுடன் கூடிய அசுரர்களை கோபிக்கின்றவனே, அல்லது, ஒழுக்கமின்மையுடன் போரை விரும்பும் தன்மையும் உடைய அசுரர்களளை கோபிக்கின்றவனே, தந்துரம் ( thanthuram) : irregular, disorderly, indisciplined; ஒழுங்கின்மை; சங்க்ரம/சங்கிரம = கலப்பு;

க்ரவுஞ்ச நெடுங்கிரி பொருத சேவக ( kravuncha nedungiri porudha sEvaka ) : You fought against the long range of Mount Krouncha! நீண்ட மலையாகிய கிரெளஞ்சமலையைப் பிளந்த வீர மூர்த்தியே,

குன்றவர் பெண் கொடி மணவாளா (kundravar peN kodi maNavALa) : You are the consort of VaLLi, the damsel of the KuRavAs! வேடர் குலக்கொழுந்தாகிய வள்ளியின் கணவனே,

புனித பூசுரருஞ் சுரரும் பணி புயச பூதர என்று (punidha bUsurarun surarum paNi buyaja bUdhara endru) : Praising Your mountainous shoulders, Holy Brahmins and DEvAs prostrate at Your feet, தூய்மையான அந்தணரும், தேவர்களும் வணங்கும் மலை போன்ற தோள்களை உடையவனே எனத் துதித்து பூசுரர் (boosurar) : Brahmins; பூதரம் (bootharam) : mountain;

இரு கண் புனல் பொழிய மீமிசை (iru kaN punal pozhiya) : with two eyes shedding tears (of ecstacy), இரு கண்களிலிருந்தும் ஆனந்தக் கண்ணீர் உடல் மீது சொரியவும், புனல் (punal) : water, river; பொழிய மீமிசை/ மீமிசை பொழிய = உடல் மீது மேலெங்கும் பொழிய,

அன்பு துளும்பிய மனனாகி (mee misai anbu thuLumbiya mananAgi) : with ever-growing love ('meemisai' can also mean excessive) filled to the brim of my heart, மேன்மேலும் (மீமிசை மிக்கது என்றும் பொருள் கொள்ளலாம்) அன்பு பெருகிய மனத்தனாகி;

அகில பூத உடம்பும் உடம்பினில் மருவும் ஆருயிரும் ( akila bUdha udambum udambinil maruvum Ar uyirum) : with my body made of all elements and containing the precious life, எல்லா பூதங்களும் சேர்ந்த உடம்பும், உடம்பில் பொருந்திய அரிய உயிரும்,

கரணங்களும் அவிழ (karaNangalum avizha) : all my intellect, mind and other entities getting released, மனம், புத்தி முதலிய கரணங்களும் கட்டு நீங்கவும், யான் என்ற நினைப்பும் விலகியபோது

சராசரி மனிதனின் அந்தகரணங்களான மனம், புத்தி, சித்தம், அகங்காரம் மேலோங்கி இருப்பதால் தான் யார் என்பதை அறியமாட்டான். ஆனால் ஆத்மாவில் லயமாகிய இருப்பவனின் அந்தகரணங்கள் மறைந்து போகும். மரத்தில் ஒரு யானை பொம்மையை செதுக்கி வைத்தால் பார்ப்பவன் யானை அழகாக இருக்கிறது என்பான், மரவேலை செய்யும் தச்சன்இது என்ன மரம் என்று கேட்பான்!

யானும் இழந்த இடந்தனில் உணர்வாலே (yAnum izhandha idanthanil uNarvAlE) : and with my ego being demolished, at that very moment, I should realize You! யான் என்ற நினைப்பும் விலகி சிவ போதம் என்ற ஓர் உணர்வினாலே

அகில வாதிகளுஞ் சமயங்களும் அடைய (akila vAdhigalun samayangaLum adaiya ) : Different schools of thought and religions recede மாறுபட்ட எல்லா வாதிகளும், சமயங்களும் ஒதுங்கிப் போய்விடவும்,

ஆம் என அன்று என நின்றதை ( Am ena andru ena nindradhai) : as You stand as the eternal and universal object that is "being" and the "non-being"! உள்ளது என்றும், இல்லது என்றும் நின்ற உண்மைப் பொருளை

அறிவிலேன் அறியும் படி இன்றருள் புரிவாயே (aRivilEn aRiyumpadi indru aruL purivAyE) : You have to grant the grace for enabling this ignorant one to realize You today! அறிவில்லாத சிறிய அடியேன் அறியும்படியாக இன்றைய தினம் உபதேசித்து அருள் புரிவாயாக.

The following lines describe Manmatha, the god of Love, who was burnt down by Lord Shiva.

மகர கேதன முந்திகழ் (magara kEdhana mun thigazh) : He has the staff with the flag of Fish; மகர மீனக் கொடியைக் கொண்டு விளங்குவதும், கேதனம் (kEthanam) : an ensign or banner of distinction, victory etc., கொடி;

செந்தமிழ் மலய மாருதமும் (senthamizh malaya mAruthamum) : He rides through the gentle breeze from the South emanating from the Pothigai Hill belonging to the beautiful Tamil Land; செம்மையான தமிழ் முழங்குவதுமான சந்தன மலையாம் பொதிகையில் பிறந்த தென்றல் காற்றும், மாருதம் (mArutham) : breeze;

மன்மதனுடைய அஸ்திரங்கள்: தென்றல் = தேர்; மலர்கள்= பாணம்; வண்டு = வில்லின் நாண்; கரும்பு = வில்.

பல வெம் பரிமள சிலீ முகமும் (pala vemparimaLa silee mugamum) : His flowery arrows arouse several aromatic scents; நானாவிதமான மணமுள்ள மலர் அம்புகளும், சிலீ முகம்/शिली मुख (silee mukham) : அம்பு;

பல மஞ்சரி வெறியாடும் மதுகர ஆரம் விகுஞ்சணியும் ( pala manjari veRiyAdum madhuka rAramvi kunjaNiyun) : His string in the bow is formed by rows of beetles that dance around many flowers; பலவிதமான மலர்க் கொத்துக்களில் உள்ள மணத்தில் விளையாடும் வண்டுகளின் வரிசையாகிய நாணுடன், ; மஞ்சரி (manjari) : bunches of flowers; வி(vi) : When used as a prefix, it means 'holy'; குஞ்சம் ; பூங்கொத்து மதுகர ஆரம் (nadhukara Aram) : the garland of bees (which constitutes Manmatha's arrows) மன்மதனுடைய வில் கரும்பும், வண்டுகள் நாண் கயிறும் ஆகும்.;

கர மதுர கார்முகமும் பொர வந்தெழு (kara madhura kArmukamum pora vandhezhu) : He comes to war holding in His hand a bow of sugarcane; கரத்திலே ஏந்திய இனிய கரும்பு வில்லும் கொண்டு காதல் போர் செய்ய எழுந்து வந்த ; கார்முகம் (kArmugam) : bow, வில்;

மதன ராஜனை வெந்து விழும்படி முனி (madhana rAjanai vendhu vizhumpadi muni) : and He is King Manmathan (Love God) who was burnt down; மன்மத ராஜனை வெந்து சாம்பலாகும்படியாகக் கோபித்த

பால முகிழ் விலோசனர் (pAla mugizh vilOchanar) : by SivA with a focused fiery eye in His forehead! நெற்றியில் குவிந்த கண்ணை உடையவரும்,

அஞ்சிறு திங்களு முது பகீரதியும் புனையுஞ் சடை முடியர் (ansiRu thingaLu mudhu bageerathiyum punaiyun sadai mudiyar) : who wears the little crescent moon and the ancient river BhAgeerathi (Ganga) in His tresses; அழகிய இளம்பிறைச் சந்திரனையும், பழமையான கங்கா நதியையும் தரித்த ஜடாமுடியை உடையவருமாகிய சிவபெருமானும்,

வேதமு நின்று மணங்கமழ் அபிராமி (vEdhamu nindru maNang kamazh abirAmi) : (along with SivA) She stands as the enchanting Goddess, worshipped by all VEdAs (scriptures), வேதமும் நின்று தொழும்படியாக விளங்கி ஞான மணம் திகழும் அபிராமி அம்மையும்,

முகர நூபுர பங்கய சங்கரி (mugara nUpura pangaya sankari) : She wears in Her lotus feet anklets made of shells; She is Sankari; சங்குகளால் செய்த கொலுசுகளை அணிந்த திருவடித் தாமரையை உடைய சங்கரியும்,

கிரி குமாரி த்ரியம்பகி (giri kumAri thriyambaki) : She is the daughter of Mount HimavAn; She has three eyes; ஹிமவானின் புத்திரியும், மூன்று கண்களை உடையவளுமான பார்வதியும்

தந்தருள் முருகனே (thandharuL muruganE) : and She, PArvathi, delivered You, Oh MurugA, பெற்றருளிய முருகனே,

சுர குஞ்சரி ரஞ்சித பெருமாளே. (sura kunjari ranjitha perumALE.) : You are the consort of DEvayAnai, Oh Great One! குஞ்சரி (kunjari) : female elephant; தேவயானை விரும்புகின்ற பெருமாளே.
