Paraphrase

Before we become old and infirm, we must get into actively serving God through serving His devotees.

கறுத்ததலை வெளிறு மிகுந்து (kaRuththathalai veLiRu migundhu) : (BEFORE) my black hair starts turning grey,

மதர்த்த இணை விழிகள் குழிந்து (madharththa iNai vizhigaL kuzhindhu) : both my healthy eyes become hollow.

கதுப்பிலுறு தசைகள் வறண்டு செவிதோலாய் (kadhuppiluRu dhasaigaL vaRaNdu sevi thOlAy) : the fleshy cheeks shrink and the ears become skinny.

கழுத்தடியும் அடைய வளைந்து கனத்தநெடு முதுகு குனிந்து (kazhuththadiyu madaiya vaLaindhu ganaththanedu mudhugu kunindhu) : the neck gets totally bent out of shape; my broad and firm back becomes hunched,

கதுப்புறு பல் அடைய விழுந்(து) உதடு நீர்சோர (kadhuppuRupa ladaiya vizhundhu udhaduneersOr ) : all the teeth fall out from the jaws and water oozes from the lips,

உறக்கம்வரும் அளவில் எலும்பு குலுக்கிவிடும் இருமல் தொடங்கி (uRakkamvarum aLavil elumbu kulukkividum irumal thodangi) : and an intense cough starts just as I am about to fall asleep, rattling my bones;

உரத்த கன குரலு நெரிந்து (uraththagana kuralu nerindhu) : My strong and resonant voice becomes feeble,

தடிகாலாய் உரத்த நடை தளரும் உடம்பு பழுத்திடு முன் (thadikAlAy uraththanadai thaLarum udambu pazhuththidumun) : The cane substitutes as my legs and my feeble body becomes ripe and shrunken. Before my body becomes debilitated,

மிகவும் விரும்பி உனக்கடிமை படும் அவர் தொண்டு புரிவேனோ (migavum virumbi unakkadimai padumavar thoNdu purivEnO) : will I ever be able to serve Your devotees who have willingly surrendered to You?

சிறுத்த செலு அதனுள் இருந்து பெருத்த திரை உததி கரந்து செறித்த மறை கொணர நிவந்த ஜெயமால் (siRuththa selu adhanuL irundhu peruththa thirai udhadhi karandhu seRiththa maRai koNara nivandha jeyamAl) : Beginning as a small fish and hiding in the big wavy ocean, He (as Vishnu in Mathsya avathAram) rescued the VEdAs that were hidden deep under ocean, சிறிய மீன் சிறையில் மீனுருவங் கொண்டு, பெரிய அலைகளுடன் கூடிய கடலின்கண் ஒளித்து வைத்த, வேதங்களைக் கொணரும் பொருட்டுத் தோன்றிய, வெற்றியையுடைய திருமால்; செலு = மீன்செதிள்; உததி கரந்து = கடலில் மறைத்து வைத்த; நிவர்தல் = ஓங்குதல்; நிவந்த = உயர்ந்த;

In the Matsya Purana, it is said that the Vedas were stolen from the god Brahma by a demonic form born from a conch shell called Somaka. The Vedas housed the creative energy of the universe and were now going to be used by Somaka for evil purposes. Visnu then descended in the form of a gigantic fish and slew Somaka while subsequently returning the Vedas to their rightful owner. Matsya was also said to have saved creation from a disastrous flood by instructing Satyavrata, a pious king, to bring all manner of seeds with him in a boat when the floods came

(Ey seRiththa vaLai kadalil varambu pudhukki) : He shot the arrows at the bay, and built a new bridge across the sea; (yE) : arrow;

இளையவனோடு அறிந்து செயிர்த்த அநுமனையும் உகந்து படையோடி (iLaiyavanodu aRindhu seyirththa anumanaiyum ugandhu padaiyOdu) : with the help of His younger brother Lakshmanan, and pleased with the angry Hanuman (who set fire to LankA), and helped by Hanuman's army (of monkeys), செயிர்த்த : கோபித்த;

மறப்புரிசை வளையும் இலங்கை அரக்கனொரு பதுமுடி சிந்த (maRappurisai vaLaiyum ilangai arakkanoru padhumudi sindha) : He invaded LankA, with its strong fortress walls, and knocked RavanA's ten heads down; புரிசை (purisai) : fortress walls;

வளைத்த சிலை விஜய முகுந்தன் மருகோனே (vaLaiththasilai vijaya mukundhan marugOnE) : by the strength of His bow (KOthaNdam); and He is the victorious Mukundhan (Vishnu). You are His nephew!

மலர்க்கமல வடிவுள செங்கை அயிற்குமர (malarkkamala vadivuLa sengai ayiRkumara) : In Your lovely lotus-like hand, You hold the Spear, Oh KumarA,

(gugaivazhi vandha malaisikara vadamalai nindra perumALE.) : You came through an underground tunnel to the hilltop and stood at the peak in ThriruvEnkatam, Oh Great One! This story appears in Kantha puranam. Once, Murugan hid Himself in PAthALa loka, after quarelling with His Mother PArvathi. Later, He dug a tunnel through the hills of ThiruvEngkadam and stood at the peak.
