Ganesha Writes on the Meru Mountain

Lord Brahma asked Vedavysa, sitting in meditation on the Kailash mountain, to write the epic Mahabharata for the benefit of mankind. Realizing the momentousness of the job, Vyasa asked for a scribe who could comprehend his verses and then write. At Brahma's suggestion, Vyasa sought Ganesha's help. Ganesha agreed, with the stipulation he wouldn't like to wait for Vyasa's compositions and he expected them to pour as he could write.

Sitting under a tree, Vyasa started reciting the poetry, which Ganesha's quick pen transcribed on to the palm leaves.

Both Ganesha and Vyasa were equally well matched and the writing of manuscripts continued without a hitch. Whenever Vyasa wanted some time to think over, he would compose a particularly difficult one, which Ganesha would take longer to comprehend and write, and Vyasa would utilize this extra available time to compose and keep ready the subsequent verses.

Once the pen with which Ganesha was writing broke. Undaunted, Ganesha broke one of his tusks and continued writing without interruption.
