Paraphrase

மாண்டார் எலும்பு அணியும் சடை ஆண்டார் (mANdAr elumbu aNiyun sadai ANdAr) : He wore the bones of the dead Gods such as Vishnu and BrahmA; He is the Leader with a unique tress; இறந்து பட்ட திருமால், பிரமன் முதலோருடைய எலும்பை அணிந்தவரும், ஜடாமுடிகொண்ட தலைவரும் ஆகிய சிவபெருமான்
ஊழிக்காலத்தில் தானே முதல்வன் என்றுணர்த்த படைப்புக் கடவுளர், காத்தற்கடவுளர் ஆகியோரின் முழு எலும்புக் கூடுகளை இறைவன் தன் இரு தோள்களிலும் விரும்பித் தாங்குவன்.

இறைஞ்ச மொழிந்ததை (iRainja mozhindhadhai) : that Lord SivA pleaded with You; then You preached to Him the PraNava ManthrA; உன்னை வணங்க, நீ உபதேசித்த பிரணவப் பொருளை,

வான் பூதலம் பவனம் கனல் புனல் ஆன வான் பூதமும் (vAn bUthalam pavanam kanal punalAna vAn bUthamun) : (If the) five elements, namely, ether, earth, air, fire and water, விண், பூமி, காற்று, நெருப்பு, நீர் ஆகியபெரிய ஐம்பூதங்களும்,

கரணங்களும் நான் போய் ஒடுங்க (karaNangaLu nAn pOy odunga) : the four karaNas (internal sense organs), namely, manas (mind), ahankAram (egoism), budhdhi (intellect) and chitta (will), and the arrogance and possessiveness in me are all gone, - (மனம், புத்தி, சித்தம், அகங்காரம்) எனப்படும் நான்கு கரணங்களும், நான், எனது - என்னும் அகங்கார மமகாரமும் நீங்கி ஒடுங்க,

அடங்கலும் மாய்ந்தால் விளங்கும் அது ஒன்றினை அருளாயேல் (adangalu mAyndhAl viLanguma dhondrinai aruLAyEl) : in other words, if all the aforesaid things are destroyed, the PraNava ManthrA will become discernible. If You choose not to teach me that ManthrA, (as an alternative) இங்ஙனம் எல்லாம் இறந்துபட்டால் விளங்குவதான அந்த ஒப்பற்ற ஒரு பொருளை நீ எனக்கு அருளாவிட்டால் (அதற்குப் பதிலாக)

வேண்டாமை ஒன்றை அடைந்து உ(ள்)ளம் மீண்டு ஆறி (vENdAmai ondrai adaindhuLa meeNdu ARi) : kindly grant me "detachment" with which my mind gives up all desires and unwaveringly வேண்டாமை என்னும் ஆசை நீக்கமான மன நிலை ஒன்றை நான் அடைந்து, என் மனம் மீண்டும் பல திசைகளில் ஓடாது அமைதிபெற்று

நின் சரணங்களில் வீழ்ந்து (nin charaNangaLil veezhndhu) : falls at Your hallowed feet; உனது திருவடிகளில் விழுந்து

ஆவல் கொண்டு உருக அன்பினை உடையேனாய் ( Aval koNdu uruga anbinai udaiyEnAy) I seek only those feet, with a melting heart full of love. ஆசையுடனே உள்ளம் உருகும்படியான அன்பு நிலையை நான் உடையவனாகி,

வேந்தா கடம்பு புனைந்து அருள் சேந்தா சரண் சரண் என்பது (vEndhA kadambu punaindh aruL sEndhA charaN saraN enbadhu) : My prayer to You, saying "Oh Lord, You are the primordial One, wearing the garland of kadappa flowers; Your holy feet are my only refuge" அரசே, கடப்ப மாலை அணிந்த காரணனே, உன் திருவடியே சரணம் என்னும் அந்த வழிபாடு

வீண் போம் அது ஒன்று அ(ல்)ல என்பதை உணராதோ (veeN pOm adhu ondrala enbadhai uNarAdhO) : is not something that would go waste; don't I know this truth? வீணாகப் போகும்படியான ஒன்று அன்று என்பதை உணரமாட்டேனோ?

ஆண்டார் தலங்கள் அளந்திட நீண்டார் முகுந்தர் (ANdAr thalangaL aLandhida neeNdAr mukundhar) : He rules the entire universe; He assumed a huge form (ViswarUpam) to measure the three worlds with His two footsteps; He is Mukundan (Lord Vishnu); உலகத்தை எல்லாம் ஆள்பவர், மூவுலகையும் தமது திருவடி இரண்டினால் அளக்கவேண்டி நீண்ட உருவம் (விஸ்வரூபம்) எடுத்தவர், முகுந்தர்,

தடம் தனில் ஆண்டு ஆவி துஞ்சியது என்று முதலை வாய் உற்று (thadan thanil ANdAvi thunjiya dhendru mudhalai vAyutru ) : In the pond, once, caught in the mouth of a crocodile, a mountain-like elephant (GajEndran) thought it was going to die and screamed for help from Lord Vishnu; மடுவில் அன்றொரு நாள் உயிரே போய்விட்டது என்று முதலையின் வாயில் அகப்பட்டு,

ஆங்கு ஓர் சிலம்பு புலம்பிட (AngOr silambu pulambida) : அங்கே ஒரு மலை போன்ற (கஜேந்திரன் என்னும்) யானை (ஆதிமூலமே என்று) கூச்சலிட, சிலம்பு (silambu) : a mountain;

ஞான்று ஊது துங்க சலஞ்சலம் ஆம் பூ முழங்கி அடங்கும் அளவில் (nyAndru Udhu thunga chalan chalam Am pU muzhangi adangum aLavil) : at that moment, Lord Vishnu blew hard on His pure conch shell (Panchajanyam) with His flower-like mouth and even before its sound subsided, அப்பொழுது ஊதின பரிசுத்தமான பாஞ்ச ஜன்யம் என்னும் சங்கை, மலரை ஒத்த வாயில் முழக்கம் செய்து சங்கின் ஓசை அடங்குவதற்குள், ஞான்று = நாள், காலம், நேரம்;; சலஞ்சலம் (chalanchalam) : A fabulous conch, நீர்வாழ் சங்குகள் இடம்புரி, வலம்புரி, சலஞ்சலம், பாஞ்சசன்னியம் என்று நான்கு வகைப்படும்.

நேசம் பூண்டு ஆழி கொண்டு வனங்களில் ஏய்ந்து (nEsam pUNdu Azhi koNdu vanangaLil Eyndhu) : with profuse love, He reached the forest where the pond was situated, holding the disc (Sudharsanam) readily in His hand; அளவில்லாத அன்பு பூண்டு சுதர்சன சக்கரத்தை ஏந்தி (மடு இருந்த) வனத்தை அடைந்து

ஆள வென்று வெறும் தனி போந்து ஓலம் என்று உதவும் புயல் மருகோனே (ALa vendru veRum thani pOndhu Olam endru udhavum puyal marugOnE) : To give refuge, He came alone, all by Himself, and rescued the elephant; You are the nephew of that Vishnu with the hue of the dark cloud! (அந்த யானையை) ஆண்டருள தான் மாத்திரம் தனியே வந்து அபயம் தந்தோம் என்று உதவிய மேக நிறம் கொண்ட திருமாலின் மருகனே,

பூம்பாளை எங்கும் மணம் கமழ் தேம் காவில் (pUm pALai engu maNam kamazh thEn kAvil) : In this nice grove, the blossoming coconut petals were giving off a pleasant aroma; இனிய பூஞ்சோலையில் இருக்கும் அழகிய தென்னம்பாளை எங்கும் நறு மணம் வீசுகின்ற; தேம் = இனிமை, நறுமணம், தேன்; பாளை = தென்னை, பனை மரங்களில் பூவை மூடிய மடல்;

நின்றது ஓர் குன்றவர் பூம் தோகை (nindradhu Or kundravar pUn thOgai) : there, among the unique hunters of the hill (VaLLimalai), stood the peacock-like damsel, VaLLi ஒப்பற்ற (வள்ளி) மலை வேடர்களின் அழகிய மயில் போன்ற வள்ளியின்

கொங்கை விரும்பிய பெருமாளே. (kongai virumbiya perumALE.) : and You desired her pretty bosom, Oh Great One! மார்பகங்களை விரும்பிய பெருமாளே.
