Paraphrase

கவடு கோத்தெழும் உவரி மா (kavadu kOththezhum uvari mA) : With a dense cluster of branches, the mango tree that sprang up suddenly in the middle of the tree (who was verily the demon Suran himself), கவடு (kavadu) : branches, மரக்கிளை ; உவரி (uvari) : sea; மரக்கிளைகளை மிகுதியாய்க் கொண்டு எழுந்து நின்றதும், கடலின் நடுவிலே தோன்றியதுமான மாமரத்தின் (உருவில் இருந்த சூரனின்);
மாயையின் செயலாகிய ஆணவ மலம் பல வேடங்கள் தரித்தும் பல மாறுபாடுகள் அடைந்தும் வரும். அதன் தாக்கத்தை இறையின் ஞான அருளால் மட்டுமே நீக்க முடியும்.

திறல் காய் வேல் பாடேன் ஆடேன் (thiRal kAy vEl pAdEn AdEn) : that Suran's bravery was burnt down by Your Spear; I never sing the glory of that Spear nor do I dance in ecstasy celebrating its triumph. திறல் (thiRal) : வலிமை;

வீடானது கூட கருணை கூர்ப்பன கழல்கள் ஆர்ப்பன கால் மேல் வீழேன் (veedAn adhukUda karuNai kUrppana kazhalgaL Arppana kAlmEl veezhEn) : I do not seek blissful liberation by prostrating at Your compassionate feet that are adorned by lilting anklets;

வீழ்வார் கால் மீதினும் வீழேன் (veezhvAr kAl meedhinum veezhEn) : nor do I fall at the feet of those who worship Your hallowed feet.

தவிடின் ஆர்ப்பதம் எனினும் ஏற்பவர் தாழாது ஈயேன் (thavidin Arppadham eninu mERpavar thAzhA theeyEn) : I do not offer unhesitatingly even a morsel of food to those who are in need of food. தவிட்டளவு சோறுகூட தயக்கமின்றி ஏற்பவர்களுக்கு நான் கொடுப்பதும் இல்லை; ஆர்ப்பதம் = சாரம்;

வாழாதே சாவது சாலத் தரமும் (vAzhAdhE sAvadhu sAlath tharamum) : Instead of such a deplorable life, death would be far better. இவ்வாறு வாழ்வதைவிட இறப்பதே மேலானது.

மோக்ஷமும் இனியென் ஆக்கை சதா ஆமாறே (mOkshamum ini en Akkai sadhA AmARE) : In order that my body is permanently relieved from the vicious cycle of birth and death, இனியேனும் பிறப்பினின்றும் விடுதலையை அடைந்து என் உடல் எப்போதும் நிலை பெற்றிருக்குமாறு

நீதா நாதா புரிவாயே (neethA nAthA purivAyE) : You only, oh Lord, can grant me liberation! (நீதான் நாதா) நீ தான் அருள் புரிவாயாக; அல்லது (நீதா நாதா புரிவாயே) நீதிமானான நீ அருள் புரிய வேண்டும்.

சுவடு பார்த்(து) அட வரு கராத்தலை தூளாமாறே (suvadu pArththu ada varu karAth thalai thULA mARE) : The crocodile pursued the footprints of the elephant (GajEndran) and came to the pond with a view to grabbing and killing him. To shatter the crocodile's head to pieces,; சுவடு(suvadu) : (நீரில் யானையின் கால்) நிழலைக் கண்டு; அடல் (adal) : போர், கொலை, பகை;

தான் ஆ நாராயணனே நற்றுணைவ பாற்கடல் வனிதை சேர்ப்ப (thAn A nArA yaNanE naRthuNaiva pARkadal vanithai sErppa) : the elephant screamed and prayed "Ha! NArAyaNA! My good friend! You are the consort of Lakshmi who emerged from the milky ocean! பாற்கடல் வனிதை சேர்ப்ப = பாற்கடலில் உதித்த இலக்குமிதேவியின் கணவனே,!

துழாய் மார்பா கோபாலா காவாய் எனவே (thuzhAy mArbA gOpAlA kAvA enavE) : You wear on Your holy chest the garland of ThuLasi, Oh GopAlA! Kindly come to my rescue!" - on hearing this appeal, துழாய் (thuzhAy) : துளசி மாலை;

கைக்குவடு கூப்பிட உவண மேல் கனகோடு ஊதா ( kaikkuvadu kUppida uvaNamER gana kOdUdhA) : from the mountain-like elephant with his lifted trunk, He mounted his vehicle, the Eagle Garuda, blowing His golden conch (PAnchajanyam), கைக் குவடு (kai kuvadu) : மலை போன்ற யானை; உவணம் (uvaNam) : கருடன்; கன கோடு (gana kOdu) : தங்க மயமான பாஞ்சன்னிய சங்கு;

வானே போது ஆள்வான் மருகோனே (vAnE pOdhALvAn marugOnE) : and rushed to GajEndran's rescue by flying through the sky! He is Lord Vishnu, and You are His nephew! வானே போது = வான் வழியாகப் பறந்து வந்து;

குலிச பார்த்திபன் உலகு காத்தருள் கோவே ( kulisa pArththiban ulagu kAththaruL kOvE) : Oh Lord, You are the protector of the Celestial Land ruled by IndrA, who holds in his hand the weapon Vajra! பார்த்திபன்(pArththiban) : king; குலிச பார்த்திபன் (kulisa pArththiban) : the king with kulisAyudha; Indra;

தேவே வேளே வானோர் பெருமாளே. (dhEvE vELE vAnOr perumALE.) : Oh God Almighty, with reddish feet! You are the Lord of the celestials, Oh Great One!
