நாலும் ஐந்து வாசல் கீறு தூறு உடம்பு கால் கை ஆகி நாரி என்பில் ஆகும் ஆகம் (nAlum aindhu vAsal keeRu thURu udambu kAlkai yAgi nAri yenbil Agum Agam) : This defective body has nine gates or exit points to which are attached arms and legs and which is made of nerves and bones; நாலும் ஐந்து வாசல் (nAlum aindhu vAsal) : four and five (nine) doors; The nine portals of the body are two eyes, two nostrils, two ears, a mouth and two excretory organs. நாலும் ஐந்து வாசல் கீறு (nAlum aindhu vAsal keeRu thURu) : ஒன்பது வாசல்களாகக் கீறி வகுக்கப்பட்டதும்; அற்பமானதுமான ; (அவ)தூறு உடம்பு ((ava)thURu udambu) : பழிச் சொல்லுக்கு இடமான உடல்; ஆகம் (Agam) : body; நாரி என்பில் ஆகும் ஆகம் ( nAri yenbil Agum Agam) : நரம்பாலும் எலும்பாலும் ஆன இந்த உடலிலே;

அதன் ஊடே நாதம் ஒன்ற ஆதி வாயில் நாடகங்கள் ஆன ஆடி (adhanUdE nAdham ondRa Adhi vAyil nAdagangaL Ana Adi ) : and to which the organs of hearing and other sensory organs attach. The body enacts several dramas with their aid; அதனூடே நாதம் ஒன்ற (adhanUdE nAdham ondRa) : ஒலியாகிய புலன் பொருந்த; ஆதி வாயில் (Adhi vAyil ) : எல்லாச் செயல்களுக்கும் மூலமாக இருக்கும் ஐம்புலன்களின் மூலமாக;

நாடு அறிந்திடாமல் ஏக வளரா முன் (nAdu aRindhidAmal Ega vaLarA mun ) : before grows and exits from this world unknown to anyone, ஏக வளராமுன்: (இறந்து) போவதற்கென்றே வளர்வதற்கு முன்னால்;

நூல் அநந்த கோடி தேடி மால் மிகுந்து பார் உளோரை நூறு செம் சொல் கூறி மாறி விளை தீமை (nUl anantha kOdi thEdi mAl migundhu pAr uLOrai nURu senchol kURi mARi viLai theemai) : it seeks several millions of scriptures and gets confused; (to make a living) it also heaps praise on (unworthy) people and incurs evil consequences thereof;

நோய் கலந்த வாழ்வு உறாமல் நீ கலந்து உ(ள்)ளாகு(ம்) ஞான நூல் அடங்க ஓத வாழ்வு தருவாயே (nOy kalandha vAzhvuRAmal nee kalandhu uLAgu nyAna nUl adanga Odha vAzhvu tharuvAyE ) : Instead of living a sick life as this, grant me the life where I study the scriptures that contain true knowledge about you.

காலன் வந்து பாலன் ஆவி காய வென்று பாசம் வீசு காலம் வந்து ஓலம் ஓலம் என்னும் ஆதி (kAlan vandhu bAlan Avi kAya vendRu pAsam veesu kAlam vandhu Olam Olam enum Adhi) : When Yama, the god of death, came to take away young Markandeyan's life and threw the noose around him, you (Shiva) came out that instant shouting out words of protection (olam or 'fear not'); பாலனான மார்கண்டேயனுடைய உயிரை யமன் வந்து வருத்த, அவன் பாசக்கயிற்றை வீசிய சமயத்திலே வெளிப்பட்டு, ‘அபயம் அபயம்’ என்று ஓலமிட்டு அழைக்கப்பட்ட ஆதிமுதல்வனும்; பாலன் ஆவி (bAlan Avi) : young boy's (markandeya's) life;

காமன் ஐந்து பாணமோடும் வேமின் என்று காணும் மோனர் காள கண்டரோடு வேதம் மொழிவோனே (kAman aindhu bANamOdu vEmin endru kANu mOnar kALa kaNdarOdu vEdham mozhivOnE ) : You discoursed the significance of Vedas to the black-throated, silence-observing Shiva who burned Manmatha or god of love with His third eye; ‘உன்னுடைய ஐந்து மலர்க்கணைகளோடு நீ எரிந்து போவாயாக’ என்று கண்ணைத் திறந்து பார்த்த மௌன மூர்த்தியும் நீலகண்டருமாகிய சிவபெருமானுக்கு வேதத்தின் தொடக்கமாகிய பிரணவத்தின் பொருளை உபதேசித்தவனே! காள கண்டர் (kALa kaNdar) : one with black throat; Shiva whose throat turned black with imbibing the poison from the milky ocean; மோனர் (monar) : one who observes 'mouna vrata';

ஆலம் ஒன்று(ம்) வேலையாகி யானை அஞ்சல் தீரும் மூல ஆழி அம் கை ஆயன் மாயன் மருகோனே (Alam ondRu vElai yAgi yAnai anjal theeru mUla Azhi angai Ayan mAyan marugOnE) : Vishnu, the shepherd (Krishna as 'Ayan'), holding the Disc (Chakra) in his gorgeous hands and reclining on the Milky Ocean from which emanated the fierce poison, came to offer refuge when the elephant Gajendra screamed for help;You are the nephew of that mystic Vishnu! ஆலம் (Alam ) : alahala poison that emanated from the Ocean of Milk; ஆலம் ஒன்று வேலையாகி (Alam ondRu vElaiyAgi ) : ஆலகாலம் தோன்றிய பாற்கடலில் பள்ளிகொண்டு; ஆலம் ஒன்றும் = விஷம் தோன்றிய; வேலை = கடல்; வேலை ஆகி = கடலில் பள்ளிகொண்டு; ஆழி அம் கை (Azhi angai ) : Beautiful hands holding the 'chakrayudha';
