தொந்தி சரிய மயிரே வெளிர நிரை தந்தம் அசைய முதுகே வளைய (thondhi sariya mayirE veLiRa nirai dhantham asaiya mudhugE vaLaiya) : With my belly sagging, my hair graying, the hitherto strong teeth shaking, my back arching,

இதழ் தொங்க ஒரு கை தடி மேல் வர மகளிர் நகை ஆடி (idhazh thonga oru kai thadi mEl vara magaLir nagai Adi) : my lips drooping, and with one hand resting on a supporting cane, I stagger, while girls giggle;

தொண்டு கிழவன் இவன் ஆர் என இருமல் கிண் கிண் என முன் உரையே குழற (thoNdu kizhavan ivan Ar ena irumal giNgiN ena mun uraiyE kuzhara ) : and wonder who this haggard, old man is; cough precedes when I try to speak, and the speech slurs

விழி துஞ்சு குருடு படவே செவிடு படு செவியாகி ( vizhi thunju kurudu padavE sevidupadu seviyAgi) : eyes get wearied and dim, and hearing gets impaired; கண்கள் எக்காலத்தும் தூங்குவதுபோல் ஒளி குன்றி குருட்டுத் தன்மையடையவும், காதுகள் செவிட்டுத் தன்மையடையவும், துஞ்சு = துயில், தூங்கு, sleep, slumber

வந்த பிணியும் அதிலே மிடையும் ஒரு பண்டிதனும் மெய் உறு வேதனையும் (vandha piNiyum adhilE midaiyum oru pandithanum meyuRu vEdhanaiyum ) : Amidst all the afflictions and the doctors' visits, my body experiences intense distress; மிடை = நெருங்குதல்;

மங்கை அழுது விழவே யம படர்கள் நின்று சருவ மலமே ஒழுக (mangai azhudhu vizhavE yama padargaL nindru saruva malamE ozhuga ) : Women wail and moan, and the messengers of Yama wait while bowels leak without control;

உயிர் மங்கு பொழுது கடிதே மயிலின் மிசை வர வேணும் ( uyir mangu pozhudhu kadidhE mayilin misai vara vENum ) : When the life force ebbs out of my body, come immediately riding the peacock.

எந்தை வருக ரகு நாயக வருக மைந்த வருக மகனே இனி வருக என் கண் வருக (endhai varuga ragu nAyaka varuga maindha varuga maganE ini varuga en kaN varuga ) : 'my darling, come; the Lord of Raghu dynasty, come hither; my son, the precious gem of my eyes, come here'
