Paraphrase

The first stanza describes the enticing hair of the courtesans, decked with fragrant flowers in which bees snoozed.

பரிமளம் மிக உள சாந்து மா(ன்) மத(ம்) (parimaLam miga uLa sAnthu mA(n) matha(m)) : Aromatic paste of sandalwood powder, musk, நறுமணம் மிக்க கலவைச் சாந்து, கஸ்தூரி, மா(ன்) மத(ம்) (mAmatham) : musk; சாந்து (sAnthu) : sandalwood paste;

முருகு அவிழ் வகை மலர் சேர்ந்து கூடிய (murugu avizh vagai malar sErnthu kUdiya) : with bunches of varieties of fresh and fragrant flowers coated with the fragrant paste; வாசனை வீசும் நல்ல பூக்கள் இவைகளில் பொருந்திக் கூடியதும், முருகு (murugu) : honey, fragrance;

பல வரி அளி துயில் கூர்ந்து வானுறு முகில் போல (pala vari aLi thuyil kUrnthu vAnuRu mugil pOla) : in the luxurious hair which looked like the dense rainy cloud in the sky, and in which the beetles with fine stripes slumbered restfully; பல ரேகைகளைக் கொண்ட வண்டுகளின் துயில் கொண்டதும், ஆகாயத்தில் உள்ள கருமேகம் போன்றதும், முகில் (mugil) : cloud; அளி (aLi) : beetles;
The beetles feed on the intoxicating honey in the flowers adorning the women's hair and snooze in them.

பரவிய இருள் செறி கூந்தல் மாதர்கள் (paraviya iruL seRi kUnthal mAthargaL) : the hair of these women was black like the surrounding darkness; பரந்துள்ள இருளைப் போல் கரியதுமான கூந்தலை உடைய மாதர்களின்

பரிபுர மலர் அடி வேண்டி (paripura malar adi vENdi) : seeking their lotus-like feet wearing the anklets, சிலம்பு அணிந்த மலர் போன்ற அடிகளை விரும்பி,

ஏவிய பணி விடைகளில் இறுமாந்த கூளனை ( Eviya paNividaigaLil iRumAntha kULanai) : I am a wastrel who swelled with pride and gladly carried out the chores tossed by them at me; அவர்கள் இட்ட வேலைகளை பணியாளாகச் செய்வதில் பெருமைகொள்ளும் பயனற்ற என்னை,

நெறி பேணா விரகனை அசடனை (neRi pENA virakanai asadanai) : I am a conceited and a foolish person who does not follow the righteous path; ஒழுக்க முறையை அனுஷ்டிக்காத வீணனை, மூடனை, விரகன் (viragan) : a skilful person; a conceited person.

வீம்பு பேசிய விழலனை (veembu pEsiya vizhalanai) : my speech is full of vanity and emptiness; கர்வப் பேச்சு பேசும் உதவாக் கரையை,

உறு கலை ஆய்ந்திடா முழு வெகுளியை (uRu kalai AynthidA muzhu veguLiyai) : I never bothered to research and understand classic texts because I hated them; உரிய கலை நூல்களை ஆய்ந்து அறியாத முழு வெறுப்பு மிக்கவனை, வெகுளி(veguLi) : malice, anger;

அறிவது போம் கபாடனை (aRivathu pOm kapAdanai) : I was a cheat and had taken leave of my senses; அறிவு நீங்கிய வஞ்சகனை, அல்லது அறிவு ஒடிப்போம்படி தப்பவிட்ட காவலாளனை,

மலம் மாறா வினையனை உரை மொழி சோர்ந்த பாவியை (malam mARA vinaiyanai urai mozhi sOrntha pAviyai) : I was full of blemishes and misdeeds; I was an unscrupulous person and went back on my words; குற்றங்கள் நீங்காத வினை நிரம்பியவனை, சொல்லும் சொல் தவறிய பாவியை,

விளிவு உறு நரகு இடை வீழ்ந்த மோடனை (viLivu uRu naragu idai veezhntha mOdanai) : and I had already fallen in hell which was supposed to be a destination after death. இறந்தபின் சேரும் நரகத்தில் இப்போதே விழுந்துள்ள மூடனை, விளிவு (viLivu) : இழிவு, கேடு, சாவு;;

வினவி முன் அருள் செய்து பாங்கின் ஆள்வதும் ஒரு நாளே (vinavi mun aruL seythu pAngin ALvathum oru nALE) : (Despite all the above), will there be a day when You will carefully enquire about what ailed me and graciously bring me under Your reign? எனக்கு என்ன ஆயிற்று என்று கவனித்துக் கேட்டு, திருவருள் பாலித்து, நன்கு ஆண்டருளுவதாகிய காலமும் ஒன்று உண்டா?

கருதலர் திரி புரம் மாண்டு நீறு எழ (karuthalar thiripuram mANdu neeRu ezha) : To shatter the enemy's stronghold, Thiripuram, to pieces, பகைவர்களின் முப்புரங்களை அழித்துத் தூளாக்க, கருதலர் (karuthalar) : enemies;

மலை சிலை ஒரு கையில் வாங்கு நாரணி (malai silai oru kaiyil vAngu nAraNi) : She, NArAyani (VishNu's sister), picked up Mount MEru in one hand as a bow; மேரு மலையை ஒரு கையில் வில்லாக வளைத்த விஷ்ணு ரூபிணியான நாராயணியே! (நாராயணனின் தங்கை அம்பிகையாகிய நாராயணி. விஷ்ணு மாயை, வைஷ்ணவி, விஷ்ணு துர்க்கை என்றும் போற்றப்படுகிறாள்.)

கழல் அணி மலை மகள் காஞ்சி மா நகர் உறை பேதை (kazhal aNi malai makaL kAnji mA nakar uRai pEthai) : She wears anklets and is the daughter of Mount HimavAn; She is KAmakshi, the presiding deity in KAnchipuram, சிலம்பணிந்த மலை மகள், காஞ்சி நகரில் விளங்கும் தேவி காமாக்ஷி,

களி மயில் சிவனுடன் வாழ்ந்த மோகினி (kaLi mayil sivanudan vAzhntha mOgini:) : She is like the blissfully dancing peacock; She is the beautiful Consort of Lord SivA; இன்பமாய் ஆடும் மயில் போன்றவள், சிவபெருமானுடன் வாழும் அழகி,

கடல் உடை உலகினை ஈன்ற தாய் உமை (kadal udai ulaginai eenRa thAy umai) : She is the Mother who created all the worlds which wear the sea as a dress; She is Goddess UmA; கடலை ஆடையாகக்கொண்ட உலகத்தை ஈன்ற தாயாகிய உமா தேவி,

கரி வனம் உறை அகிலாண்ட நாயகி அருள் பாலா (kari vanam uRai agilANda nAyagi aruL bAlA) : She is AkilANda NAyaki having Her shrine in ThiruvAnaikkA; and You are the child kindly delivered by Her! திருவானைக்காவில் வீற்றிருக்கும் அகிலாண்ட நாயகி அருளிய குழந்தையே, கரி = யானை; கரத்தை உடையது;

முரணிய சமரினில் மூண்ட ராவணன் (muraNiya samarinil mUNda rAvaNan) : In the war that was waged, RAvaNA charged aggressively மாறுபட்ட போரில் முற்பட்டெழுந்த இராவணன்

இடி என அலறி முன் ஏங்கி வாய்விட (idi ena alaRi mun Engi vAy vida) : and later screamed (in pain) like a thunder; before that, he wept at the top of his voice, thoroughly shaken (வலியினால்) இடி ஒலியுடன் அலறியும், அதற்கு முன் கலங்கி வாய்விட்டு அழவும்,

முடி பல திருகிய நீண்ட மாயவன் மருகோனே (mudi pala thirugiya neeNda mAyavan marugOnE : as his many heads were severed by Rama; He is also VishNu, who took the Supreme Colossal shape (ViswarUpam); You are His nephew! (அவனுடைய) பல தலைகளை அரிந்துத் தள்ளிய இராமனும், விஸ்வரூபம் எடுத்தவனுமாகிய திருமாலின் மருகனே,

முதல் ஒரு குறமகள் நேர்ந்த நூல் இடை (muthal oru kuRamagaL nErntha nUlidai) : Once, You went seeking VaLLi, the matchless damsel of the KuRavAs, with a twine-like slender waist, முன்பு, ஒப்பற்ற குற மகள் வள்ளியின் நுண்ணிய நூல்போன்ற இடை மீதும்,

இரு தன கிரி மிசை தோய்ந்த காமுக (iru thana giri misai thOyntha kAmuga) : and buried Your face amidst her mountainous bosom, Oh Great Lover! இரண்டு மார்புகளின் மீதும் தோய்ந்த காதலனே,

முது பழ மறை மொழி ஆய்ந்த தேவர்கள் பெருமாளே. (muthu pazha maRai mozhi Ayntha thEvarkaL perumALE.) : You are the Lord of the celestials who have done extensive research on the old scriptures, Oh Great One! மிகப் பழையதான வேதங்களை ஆய்ந்துள்ள தேவர்களின் பெருமாளே.
