Paraphrase

This verse reveals about Saint Arunagirinathar's life. The poet talks about the gift of knowledge that he receives from the Lord — the abiding interest he gets in critically understanding various literature on religion; the inexpressible state of non-duality (advaita) that he attains by extricating himself from the web of desires; the fame and royal patronage that is showered on him for singing the honey-like sweet Thiruppugazh;

ஆனாத ஞான புத்தியைக் கொடுத்ததும் (AnAtha njAna puththiyaik koduththathum) : You gifted me the imperishable Spiritual Knowledge, ஆனாத(AnAtha ) : சிறிதளவும் என்றும் குறையாத;

ஆராயு(ம்) நூல்களில் கருத்து அளித்ததும் (ArAyu(m) nUlkaLil karuththu aLiththathum) : and an interest in the scriptural texts worth researching into.

ஆதேச வாழ்வினில் ப்ரமித்து இளைத்து உயிர் அழியாதே ஆசா பயோதியைக் கடக்க விட்டதும் (AthEsa vAzhvinil pramiththu iLaiththu uyir azhiyAthE AsA payOthiyaik kadakka vittathum) : You gave me the ability to cross the sea of desire without losing myself in this turbulent and delusory life and deteriorating to the point of death. ஆதேச வாழ்வு (Adhesa vAzhvu) : ஒரு வழியாக நிலைத்திராத, திரிபு உள்ள வாழ்க்கை; ஆசா பயோதி (AsA payOdhi) : sea of desire;

வாசாம் அகோசரத்து இருத்துவித்ததும் (vAsA makOsaraththu iruththu viththathum) : You elevated me to a height that is beyond the reach of speech. வாக்குக்கு எட்டாத ஒரு நிலையில் என்னை இருக்கும்படி அருளியதும், அகோசரம் (agOcharam) : not perceived by senses; அறியப்படாமை, புலன்களுக்குப் புலப்படாமை;

ஆபாதனேன் மிக ப்ரசத்தி பெற்று இனிது உலகேழும் யான் ஆக நாம(ம்) (ApAthanEn miga prasaththi petRu inithu ulagEzhum yAn Aga nAma(m)) : You made the lowly me into a very famous person, famed for having attained the pleasant non-dual, advaita state with the realization that all people and things in the seven worlds are none other than myself; கீழ்ப்பட்டவனான நான் மிக்க புகழ் எய்தி இனிமையுடன் ஏழு உலகில் உள்ளவரும் உள்ளவையும் நானே என்னும் அத்துவித நிலையைப் பெறுமாறு புகழ் கொண்டதும்,

அற்புதத் திருப்புகழ் தேன் ஊற ஓதி (aRputhath thiruppugazh thEn URa Othi) : You made me compose excellent poems of Your glory and sing them with nectar-like sweetness.

எத்திசைப் புறத்தினும் ஏடு ஏவு ராஜதத்தினை பணித்ததும் (eththisaip puRaththinum Edu Evu rAjathaththinaip paNiththathum) : You granted me the greatness so that any of my writings or letters sent in any direction were revered with royal respect. எல்லா திசைகளிலும் நான் எழுதி அனுப்பும் பாடல்கள் ராஜ மரியாதையுடன் போற்றப்படத்தக்க மேன்மையை எனக்கு அருளிச் செய்ததும்,

In the following lines Saint Arunagirinathar thanks the Lord for granting him freedom from future births.

இடர் ஆழி ஏறாத மா மலத்ரய குணத்ரய (idar Azhi ERAtha mA malathraya kuNathraya ) : The three major afflictions or malas (namely, arrogance, karma and delusion), and the three gunAs (qualities, namely, sathwam, rAjasam and thAmasam - meaning, tranquility, aggressiveness and lethargy) that would not let one cross the miserable sea (of birth); இடராழி = துன்பக் கடல்; ஏறாத = கரையேற முடியாத; மாமலத்ரய = பெரிய ஆணவம், கன்மம், மாயை, எனப்படும் மும்மலங்களும்; குணத்ரயம் = சத்வ குணம், இராசதம், தாமதம் என்ற மூவகைக் குணங்களும்,

நானா விகார புற்புதம் பிறப்பு அற (nAnA vikAra puRputham piRappu aRa) : of birth, transient like an air-bubble in water, and afflicted by several sins (such as lust, anger, covetousness, ignorance, pride, envy, stubbornness and prejudice) - all these were obliterated, நானா விகாரம் = பல விதமான கலக்கங்களும் (காமம், குரோதம், உலோபம், மோகம், மதம், மாற்சரியம், இடும்பு, அசூயை - எனப்படும் எண் வகைப்பட்ட துர்க்குணங்கள் கூடியதும்,

ஏது ஏமமாய் எனக்கு அநுக்ரகித்ததும் மறவேனே (Ethu EmamAy enakku anukrakiththathum maRavEnE) : with Your blessings that You showered on me in the nicest manner, and I would never forget this gesture! ஏமம் (aemam) : delight, enjoyment, gratification; பாதுகாப்பு; ஏது ஏமமாய்/ஏம ஏதுவாய் (aethu aemamaay/aema aethuvaay) : ரட்சிக்கும் நிகழ்வாய்;

மா நாகம் நாண் வலுப்புறத் துவக்கி (mA nAgam nAN valuppuRath thuvakki) : The giant serpent VAsuki was tied firmly as the string;

ஒர் மா மேரு பூதரத் தனுப் பிடித்து (Or mA mEru pUtharath thanup pidiththu) : and the matchless huge Mount MEru was held as the bow; பூதரம் (bootharam) : mountain; பூதரத் தனு (bUtharath thanu) : மலையாகிய வில்;

ஒரு மால் ஆய வாளியைத் தொடுத்து (oru mAl Aya vALiyaith thoduththu) : the great Lord, VishNu, was used as the arrow to be wielded; வாளி(vALi) : arrow;

அரக்கரில் ஒரு மூவர் மாளாது பாதகம் புரத்ரயத்தவர் தூளாகவே (arakkaril oru mUvar mALAthu pAthakam purathrayaththavar thULAkavE) : of the demons actively involved in sinful deeds in Thiripuram, except three individuals, were shattered to pieces, புரத்ரயத்தவர் (purathrayaththavar) : முப்புரத்து அசுரர்கள்;

Following the death of Tarakasura, who was killed by Kartikeya, his sons Tarakaksha, Vidyunmali and Kamalaksha did penance to become immortal. Brahma refused to grant them immortality; so instead, they asked to be given three forts, one made of gold, another of silver, and the third made of iron. There they would live for a thousand years, and at the end of that time, when the three forts would be aligned, they could be destroyed only by a single arrow.

Asuras soon became conceited and started tormenting the gods, who then approached Lord Shiva requesting Him to destroy the asuras. Lord Shiva burned down the Tripura forts with His mere smile. He, however, gave life to the three demon princes, since these devotees of Shiva repented for their wrongdoings. He granted that two of them could become the guards at His shrine; the third one became the drummer during the Cosmic Dance of SivA.

முதல் சிரித்த வித்தகர் வாழ்வே (muthal siriththa viththakar vAzhvE) : once, when He once grinned from the eye on His forehead; You are the Treasure of that Supremely Erudite Lord SivA! முதல் = முன்பு;

வலாரி பெற்றெடுத்த கற்பக வனம் மேவும் தே(ம்) நாயகா (valAri petReduththa kaRpaka vanam mEvum thE(m) nAyakA) : "Oh Lord, You are the Lord of the celestial land having the forest of Karpaga trees nurtured by Indra OR You are the Consort of DEvayAnai, who lived in the grove of KaRpaga trees in the celestial land and raised by, IndrA"! 'தேவேந்திரன் அடைந்து வளர்த்த தோப்பு உள்ள தேசத்துக்கு தலைவனே'! அல்லது 'தேவேந்திரன் மகளாய் அடைந்து வளர்த்த, கற்பக மரங்கள் நிறைந்த தேவலோகத் தோப்பில் வாழும், தேவயானையின் நாயகனே', தே(ம்)(the(m)) : desam or country, தேசம், பொன்னுலகம்;

எனத் துதித்த உத்தம வான் நாடர் வாழ (enath thuthiththa uththama vAn nAdar vAzha) : so praised the virtuous DEvAs who were protected;

விக்ரமத் திருக் கழல் சேராத சூரனைத் துணித்து அடக்கி (vikramath thiruk kazhal sErAtha cUranaith thuNiththu adakki) : You slayed and subdued the demon SUran who never contemplated Your mighty hallowed feet;

அ வரை மோதி சேறு ஆய சோரி புக்கு அளக்கர் திட்டு எழ (a varai mOthi sERu Aya cOri pukku aLakkar thittu ezha) : the Mount Krouncha was smashed, and because of the demons' blood gushing like mud, the sea itself rose like a solid mass of mountain; அந்தக் கிரெளஞ்ச பர்வதத்தைத் தாக்கி; சேற்றைப் போன்ற ரத்தம் பாய்கின்ற காரணத்தால் கடலும் மேடாகிப் போக; சோரி (sOri) : blood; அளக்கர் (aLakkar) : sea or land; சீராவினால்: குறுவாளால்;

மாறா நிசாசர குலத்தை இப்படி சீராவினால் அறுத்து அறுத்து ஒதுக்கிய பெருமாளே.(mARA nisAsara kulaththai ippadi seerAvinAl aRuththu aRuththu othukkiya perumALE.) : and the host of recalcitrant demons were slaughtered to pieces hither and thither by Your mighty sword, Oh Great One! அரக்கர் குலத்தை இப்படியும் அப்படியுமாக ‘சீரா’ என்னும் குறுவாளால் அறுத்து அறுத்து வீழ்த்திய பெருமாளே! மாறா – பகைத்து நின்ற; சீரா (seera) : உடைவாள்;
