Paraphrase

இன மறை விதங்கள் கொஞ்சிய சிறு சதங்கை (inamaRai vidhangaL konjiya siRu sadhangai) : The small anklets that jingle several melodies of VEdAs liltingly, வேதத் தொகுதியின் வகைகளை விதவிதமாக கொஞ்சிக் கொஞ்சி ஒலித்துக் காட்டுகின்ற சிறிய சதங்கை;

கிண்கிணி இலகு தண்டை அம் புண்டரீகம் ( kiNkiNi ilagu thaNadaiyam puNdareekam) : and the tiny bells (kiNkiNi) within the elegant thandai on Your beautiful lotus feet;

எனது மன பங்கயம் குவளை குரவம் புனைந்து (enadhu mana pangaiyan kuvaLai kuravam punaindhu) : I wish to worship those feet by adorning them with the lotus representing my mind, red lilies and kurA flowers; குவளை(kuvaLai) : செங்கழுநீர்;

இரவு பகல் சந்ததம் சிந்தியாதோ (iravu pagal santhatham chinthiyAdhO) : why cannot my mind contemplate those feet at all times, day and night?

உனது அருளை அன்றி இங்கு ஒரு துணையும் இன்றி நின்று உளையும் ஒரு வஞ்சகன் (unadhu aruLai andri ingoru thuNaiyum indri nindru uLaiyum oru vanjagan) : I am a cunning cheat who is mired in misery and has no support other than Your grace,

பஞ்ச பூத உடல் அது சுமந்து (panchabUtha udaladhu sumandhu) : carrying the burden of this body made up of the five elements, (namely, earth, water, fire, air and the sky),

அலைந்து உலகு தொறும் வந்து வந்து ( alaindh ulagu thoRum vandhu vandhu ) : and roaming about aimlessly in all the worlds, taking several births again and again.

உழலும் அது துன்பு கண்டு அன்பு உறாதோ ( uzhalumadhu thunbu kaNdu anbuRAdhO) : Will you not be kind to me even after seeing all my miseries?

The following six lines describe how Murugan's parents praise and take delight in their child. The first two lines describe the elephant Airavata who brings up Deivayanai, the damsel who delights in the shelter of Murugan's powerful shoulders that have shown their mettle in the battle that destroyed the demons.

கனம் நிவத தந்த (gana nivadha thandha ) : This elephant has lofty and majestic ivory tusks; நிவதல் (nivadhal) : உயர்தல்; தந்தம் (dhantham) : tusk; கனம் நிவத தந்த (gana nivadha thandha) : பெருமையும் உயர்ச்சியும் கூடிய தந்தங்களை உடைய;

சங்க்ரம கவள (sangrama kavaLa ) : He is well equipped for warfare and He gulps down several balls of food; போருக்கு உற்றதும், உணவு உண்டைகளை கொள்வதுமான; கவளம் — உணவு உண்டைகளைக் கொள்வதுவும்; சங்கிராமம் – போர்;

துங்கம் வெம் கடம் விகட குஞ்சரம் (thunga vem kada vigada kunjaram ) : He is unblemished; He gets very mad at times – the handsome celestial elephant (AirAvadham). துங்கம் வெம் கடம் விகட குஞ்சரம் (thunga vem kada vikata kunjaran ) : பரிசுத்தமான, கொடிய மதம் கொண்ட, அழகுள்ள ஐராவதம் என்னும் யானை; கடம் – மதம் கொண்ட; விகடம் – அழகுள்ள ;

தங்கும் யானை கடகம் சயிலம் பெறும் படி (thangum yAnai kadaga sayilam peRumpadi) : "DEvayAnai, who is seated on that elephant, receives the gift of Your bejewelled and mighty shoulders,

அவுணர் துஞ்ச (avuNar thunja) : the demons are destroyed,

முன் கனக கிரி சம்பெழுந்து (mun kanaka giri sambezhundhu) : and the erstwhile golden mount Krouncha is shattered leaving the ground team with wild grass; சம்பு எழுந்து – (பாழ்பட்டு அது இருந்த இடத்தில்) சம்புப் புல் எழவும்;

அம்புராசி அனல் எழ முனிந்த (amburAsi analezha munindha ) : and the seas catch fire and dry up – so powerful was His anger, அம்புராசி(amburAsi) : sea;

சங்க்ரம மதலை கந்தன் என்று ( sangrama madhalai kandhan endru) : of this brave and angry warrior c Kandhan, our child, "

அரனும் உமையும் புகழ்ந்து அன்பு கூர (aranum umaiyum pugazhndh anbu kUra ) : so praise Lord SivA and DEvi UmA, lovingly!

அகில புவனங்களும் சுரரொடு திரண்டு நின்று (agila buvanangaLum surarodu thiraNdu nindru) : The entire people of all the worlds and the celestials have assembled and stand along with

அரி பிரமர் கும்பிடும் தம்பிரானே. (ari biramar kumbidum thambirAnE.) : Lord Vishnu and BrahmA and worship You, Oh Great One!
