பழியுறு சட்டகமான குடிலை எடுத்து (pazhiyuRu sattagamAna kudilai eduththu) : Entering the body which is a cottage functioning as a seat for all sins. சட்டகம் (chattagam) : outline, framework, body;

இழிவான பகரும் வினை செயல் மாதர் தரும் மாய படு குழி (izhivAna pagarum vinai seyal mAdhar tharu mAya padu kuzhi) : and seeking women with foul words and deeds who set up treacherous traps for this body.

புக்கு இனிது ஏறும் வழி தடவி தெரியாது (inidhERum vazhi thadavith theriyAdhu) : Having been trapped, and not knowing the way out of those pits, people grope in the dark.

பழமை பிதற்றிடு(ம்) லோக முழு மூடர் (pazhamai pidhatridu lOka muzhu mUdar) : Such stupid fools of this world talk only about their so-called old values;

உழலும் விருப்புடன் ஓது(ம்) பல சவலை கலை தேடி ( uzhalum virup pudan Odhu pala savalaik kalai thEdi) : and roam about in search of many confusing books. சவலை(savalai) : confusion, மனக் குழப்பம் ;

ஒரு பயனை தெளியாது விளியா முன் (oru payanaith theLiyAdhu viLiyAmun) : Ultimately, they die without deriving any benefit whatsoever. Before I perish like them, விளியா முன் (viLiaa mun) : before dying;

உன கமல பத(ம்) நாடி உருகி உ(ள்)ளத்து அமுது ஊற (una kamalp padha nAdi urugi uLath amudhURa) : I seek Your lotus feet, melting in ecstasy, with the nectar of devotion gushing in my heart.

உனது திருப்புகழ் ஓத அருள்வாயே (unadhu thiruppugazh Odha aruLvAyE) : Do bless me with the capacity to sing Your glory!

பொரு சூரன் நெறு நெறு என (poru sUra neRu neRena) : as the warring SUran (in the disguise of a mango tree) began to crack and collapse,

பல தேவர் ஜெய ஜெய என (pala dhEvar jeya jeyena) : and as the numerous celestials hailed Your victory,

கொதி வேலை விடுவோனே ( kodhi vElai viduvOnE) : You flung the red hot Spear!

அழகு தரித்திடு நீப (azhagu dharith thidu neeba) : You are adorned with the beautiful kadappa garland!

சரவண உற்பவ வேல (saravaNa uRbava vEla) : You emerged from the Pond of SaravaNa! Oh VElA! சரவண உற்பவ(saravana uRbava) : born amidst reeds in the forest (saravana means clump of reeds);
